Great to fall asleep to

These buds have some of my favorite fall asleep sounds that let me drift off consistently. EEG features are great! I love that I don’t lose my spot if I watch a show or listen to a book. I do feel more refreshed when using them, though they are so from traditional trackers. Pair well with Apple Watch or other low lift device to get intricacies of sleep.

Better rest days before busy days

I use NextSense buds a few times a week, particularly before stressful deadlines, important meetings, travel, or short nights. The soundscapes help me relax, and I appreciate being able to track my sleep afterward.

Phenomenal

Boosted my sleep, was able to sleep 3 hrs less and have same deep sleep. Great for meditation, love the soundscapes and really enjoy tracking my naps as well

Way too loud for sleeping

Unable to lower the volume, too noisy to sleep with. Seems to be a software bug when you launch sleep, the volume gets locked. Not comfortable as a side sleeper. Prefer the hatch even if it plays to the room. Really wanted to like this and was so curious about the metrics. Ugh, returning.

Doesn’t connect

the connection feature is buggy and doesn’t work so I can’t even use them. the small strips have been removed as instructed. case open. it doesn’t reliably flash for connection, and when it does, it still can’t connect. I’m fairly good with hardware and trying different approaches. don’t buy until they fix this. I will update my review when/if they do.

Disappointed

I’ve been using the NextSense Smartbuds for about 4 months and honestly, I regret buying them.

Comfort / Fit
I’m mostly a side sleeper, and despite trying different tip sizes, these become uncomfortable after a while. Not “slightly annoying” uncomfortable. More like “why does it feel like there’s Legos in my ears?” uncomfortable.

Connection Issues
Getting both earbuds connected properly is weirdly frustrating. I’ll get the right side showing a good connection, leave it completely alone, adjust the left side, and suddenly the right side disconnects. Since you need both earbuds connected for full sleep tracking, it turns into a nightly mini-game I never wanted to play.

Soundscape Problems
When I first got them, the Soundscape feature worked pretty well. I’d play background noise and it would continue until I fell asleep, usually 20 minutes or so.

Now? It shuts off after about 5 minutes because the app says “sleep detected.” Apparently blinking too slowly now counts as REM sleep.

I restart it over and over, but same issue every time.

If I force the Soundscape to play all night instead of stopping when it incorrectly thinks I’m asleep, the batteries don’t even last 7 hours anyway.

Battery / Charging
Charging is also oddly finicky. You have to position the earbuds in the case just right or they don’t charge properly. More than once I’ve gone to bed assuming they were charged, only to find one dead halfway through the night even though the case showed full charge.

Sleep Tracking Accuracy
The tracking feels wildly inaccurate. I recently had a migraine and know for a fact I only slept around 3 to 4 hours. The app proudly informed me I got 7 hours and 3 minutes of sleep. If that’s true, I’d also like the app to explain why I felt like roadkill all day.

I’ve also gotten up in the middle of the night, walked to the bathroom, and the app still claimed I was asleep the whole time.

Customer Support
I contacted support, explained the issues, requested a refund, and so far… crickets.

Subscription Pricing
This part really annoyed me. They used to offer a monthly replacement/tip subscription around $15/month. Now they’ve “upgraded” it to:

* 3 months for $59.99
* 6 months for $99.99
* 12 months for $149.99

For silicone ear tips. Silicone ear tips.

I updated the app recently, so maybe something improves, but at this point I’m not optimistic. For the price, I expected something polished and reliable. Instead, I got uncomfortable earbuds, questionable sleep data, and an app that thinks I’m sleeping while walking around my house.

I had high hopes

It’s 2:30 a.m. I am wide awake. I’m wondering why I don’t hear any sound lulling me back to sleep. I look at the app. It says , “active sleep detected.” I get up to go to the bathroom and it still says it’s detecting active asleep. Oh wow! I must be dreaming that I’m wide awake and writing this at 2:30 in the morning.
Sending them back.

Meditation

Amazing meditation feature now with brain adaptive music

Response from developer

Thank you so much — an extra hour of sleep is a real, meaningful difference, and we love hearing that you're seeing it in your boost numbers. That's exactly what we built Smartbuds to do. Keep it up, and don't hesitate to reach out to hello@nextsense.io if you ever need anything.

Disappointing

I often get zero slow waves, zero boosts. The app in the morning says the connection is poor even though it’s good when I go to bed, I’ve checked it in the middle of the night and it was still good. Also the battery life isn’t great. The audio turns off when you go to sleep, but doesn’t turn back on when you wake up. You have the option of running it all night however that would drain the battery that barely is enough to power the ear buds for the night.

App doesn’t work

Received my earbuds on May 4, 2026 and spent more than 4 hours trying to learn-in the earbuds into the app installed on my iphone14 including many AI recommendations without success. Returning these tomorrow.

Exacerbates late night insomnia

I’ve spent a month and a half now with the smartbuds, and their Achilles heel is sleep-detection. Almost nightly I’ll be lying awake at 3am and start getting the “boost” of pink noise, and the only way to get it to stop is: get out your phone, go to the app and stop your sleep session, wait, then start it again. Then in the morning it will report that I was awake 7 minutes, and my Apple Watch will say an hour and a half, and in reality it was over 2h.

The auto-start feature seems really flaky after the most recent firmware update.

I’m bullish on the tech’s possibilities, but there are a bunch of usability issues to work out.

No options to change

This app sucks! I’m unable to change the sound settings. About 1 hour in it changes to a different sound which wakes me up. There has been no communication or instructions on how to change the On Bud sound.

Response from developer

Sorry to hear this. Your feedback matters and we take it seriously. Please reach out to support@nextsense.io — we want to help.

Not ready

The signal boost that extends deep sleep actually wakes me up it's so loud. The product isn't ready for retail.

Response from developer

We're sorry this wasn't the experience you expected. We'd really like to make it right. Please contact support@nextsense.io so we can help directly.

Product helps with focus

I just started using the product, and I’m really liking it so far. I enjoy using them as my daily earbuds. I definitely see an improvement in my focus when wearing these smartbuds while I work. I’m excited to see new features and how they help my sleep.

Response from developer

Appreciate the kind words! We're hearing about more and more folks using Smartbuds for deep work and other daytime activities. Stay tuned for more developments on this front :)

Great soundscapes and align with my oura

Great soundscapes and useful features. The sleep tracking seems to align with my Oura, which is great to see. There are a few minor bugs, but nothing critical for me. I understand it’s a first gen product and things will improve over time, overall a solid experience so far.

Response from developer

We appreciate the feedback and are thrilled to hear that you're finding Smartbuds useful. And, yes, there are certainly improvements and exciting new features in the works. 🙂

Noticeably improved sleep!

As someone who struggles to get consistent deep sleep, I have seen a noticeable improvement on the nights I use my Smartbuds!

love the masking audio selection

The masking audio and the fit of the earbuds really helps block out noise when traditional earplugs wont cut it. Nice!

Response from developer

So glad the masking audio is working well for you! We put a lot of care into the soundscape library. If you have any favorites or suggestions for new sounds, we'd love to hear them at support@nextsense.io.

Slow wave count

I am really benefiting from this! I use it every night because it really improves my sleep, and I feel better the next day. I realized that if I sleep enough with it, I am so energized the next day because not only did I sleep enough, but my sleep quality was good as well. My slow wave count was 300-400, but I see it can sometimes be over 900. And when I had over 900 slow wave counts, I felt so great that day!

Response from developer

This is wonderful to hear. Consistent nightly use is the best way to see results, and it sounds like you're doing exactly that. We're continuing to improve the sleep insights and features with every update — stay tuned, and thank you for being part of the NextSense community.

Failed to Receive Update

The app failed to allow an update and rendered the ear plugs useless. I never got the app or the ear plugs to work and promptly returned the product.

Response from developer

We're really sorry about this experience — a failed firmware update is frustrating, and we take it seriously. The good news is this is almost always recoverable. Please reach out to our support team at hello@nextsense.io and we'll walk you through the steps to get your Smartbuds back up and running. We've also improved the update process in our latest app version to prevent this from happening. We want to make this right for you.

Where is the sleep data? ERG should give us a percentage of the different brainwave?

This is for people that have no concept of sleep data. I was hoping to track brainwaves why have eeg if you’re not going to use it. This going back it’s more of an expensive toy.

Response from developer

Thank you for the feedback — we hear you. Smartbuds do measure real EEG brainwave activity, and we understand the desire to see more of that data surfaced directly in the app. Deeper sleep stage breakdowns and more detailed brainwave metrics are on our roadmap. We're a small team shipping fast, and your input helps us prioritize. If you'd like to share more about what you'd want to see, we'd love to hear from you at hello@nextsense.io.
