If you're going to give us a thing full of lessons LET US FINISH IT

Response from developer

Hi there! I can understand that you would like to have more course lessons for free. You can also learn one of our eight free songs that we have. This, you can definitely finish. Hope, you'll give it a second try.

Nearly perfect

It’s a great App and i download it after not connecting with Skoove.

Overall, I’m enjoying it and took out a subscription. It would be great to see a couple of features in the future:

1. Less App interaction, as in less pressing next or play, i want to keep my hands on the piano more.

2. Instead of just a green tick, show something like a gold star if you hit the note perfectly and in time. The green ticks can be false positives if you hit 3 notes before the right one or your timing is off.

3. The courses don’t seem in order of complexity. Sometimes it feels more advanced then it goes back to being easier.

Other than that, i recommend trying the App, for me this one works and i spend a good hour practising every day and in a week I’m feeling more confident.

Great resource for intermediate and advanced players

I recently purchased flowkey and am thoroughly enjoying it. It has a vast selection of songs at a level that suits me. I love that you can adjust the size of the sheet music in proportion to the video and I personally find it helpful in developing my music reading. But I guess that depends on how the player chooses to use the app, I force myself to look at the sheet music and only use the video to learn the fingering.

The only thing that would make this app 5stars for me would be the ability to print the sheet music which would avoid having to scroll to the the bit I want to practice each time.

Thanks Flowkey, great app!

Very poor note recognition

I've cancelled this within the first few hours. Terrible response to iPad mic, simply doesn't recognise the notes and therefore the exercise hangs despite being played clearly, with the iPad on the top of the piano, music stand. Casio Privia at A=440.
Also, perhaps a niggle but why are the count ins not consistent? Sometimes there are 4 Beats in, sometimes just 3, and on the quarter note rest exercise in Chapter 1 there are 5. This will be extremely confusing for beginners.

And as for the slowed down exercises. Whose idea was it to time stretch the audio file? It's an awful sound! All the artefacts of poor time-stretching make listening to it hard on the ears. Either pay for a far better algorithm or actually play it half speed, please!

So far then, some good points, and it works far better via midi, which I think you ought to acknowledge and recommend to buyers. Your poor excuse (and stock automated response to the issue when raised by others) about different tunings doesn't stand up given the huge advances in pitch recognition software from Antares, Melodyne and others.

We'll see how well it copes with more polyphony later...going to give it until the end of my paid month and take stock then. Playground has been recommended by some, but dissed by others so we'll see.

Sorry to hear that the note detection didn't work well for you. In case you have an acoustic piano, it might be tuned differently (our app is tuned to standard pitch). However, we are already brainstorming on possible solutions for acoustic instruments. I'll also pass your feedback regarding the count ins on to the song team.

Needs updated to become Piano Teacher

I got 6 months free with a new Yamaha keyboard. Like everyone else I struggled with the microphone interface and eventually gulped and bought the Apple camera connector (£50) and used the MIDI interface with my iPAD. Even then you need lots of broadband bandwidth and a powerful iPad. It then works brilliantly but it’s expensive. I’m a complete novice and think Flowkey is an excellent App but it needs enhanced. The courses are unstructured, overlapping and tedious. Flowkey could become a virtual piano teacher but it needs to feedback views of your performance, set targets and not let you move on until you have passed an exam. I think a premium subscription would only be worth it if the courses are completely rewritten. Otherwise it’s an expensive sheet music app. I asked Flowkey if they had plans for a real update but no response. Good app, probably the best around but very pricey and is missing a market opportunity.

Ok, been working with it about two weeks now

It does a lot but doesn’t really do what I want and need.
First of all, it only works with an internet connection so if you expect to take this to a studio somewhere and use it off line, you will be disappointed.
Secondly, the courses are good, but uneven with no directed progression. There is no way to gauge your current skill level and start from there.
Third, I wish there was an option to show the whole score of a piece. You either practice it their way or not at all.
The keyboard showing the notes is fine, but it would be nice to have more suggested fingering notations on the musical score.
And an option to name the notes on the score, rather than having to divert your attention to the keyboard above the score.
Fourth. I am really only interested in classical. There should be significantly more easy to intermediate pieces in the program. Most of this stuff is public domain, so why not?
I wanted to make a commitment so I bought a years worth. Now I am regretting it. I didn't spend enough time during the Trail period figuring out that it wasn’t really for me.

Updated Review

It’s disappointing that you can’t use both the streaming lights and the wait mode at the same time on a song on the Yamaha CSP-150. That would have made this app amazing. Instead, it was disappointing. I have to keep using the Yamaha Smart Pianist app until then.

Update...I got it to work now. Works with streaming lights and wait mode at same time only if the piano is not accessing the microphone. Great email tech support. The only thing that would help make this a 5 star app is if I could play the background music while playing the piano like with the Yamaha smart pianist app. The only issue with the smart pianist app, and why I’m looking at this app, is that the smart pianist app only has 50 pop songs.

S

The app doesn’t recognize the notes when i play with both hands

Response from developer

We're sorry to hear that! May we ask if you have an acoustic instrument or an electronic one? An acoustic instrument could be slightly out of tune or tuned differently, so our note detection has problems recognizing the notes you play since our app is tuned to standard pitch. If you have an electronic instrument, I highly recommend our MIDI option. To use the note detection via MIDI, please connect your instrument via MIDI to USB cable (or a regular printer cable, if your instrument has a so called "to host" jack) with your laptop or tablet. When you use an iPad, you also need a Camera Connection Kit which will serve as adapter, since the USB end of the cable is too big to fit in your iPad. Once your instrument is connected with your device note detection will work via cable which is much smoother and more reliable than via microphone. Could you give that a try? If you need any further help, please get in touch with our support team via our in-app messenger or via e-mail: support@flowkey.com

If you’re looking for “the app to learn piano” -Congrats! You just found it. Yeyyy

(...and now feel free to go ahead and share some $$ to good hardworking people who made this beauty. They deserve it and I’m sure you gonna love it! 😉)

Last year, for the reasons which I still don’t exactly know, I suddenly decided that I want to learn to play piano. Somehow I kidda figured that ”nothing difficult here and I don’t need a teacher”, so I went researching web.
Few months later “the theory basics” were mostly covered, but next then next logically following question came up “Well, that’s all great, now I know it and what do I suppose to do with all of that now??”
So the point I’m trying to make here is: If I wouldn’t accidentally found this app I’d probably still be “mastering to play scales” or just simply gave up on all of this “piano nonsense” and would have missed the whole FUN I’m having now.

Premium does not unlock after paying

Really loved the functionality but after deciding to pay $27.95 USD/month to subscribe, the app will not unlock premium version. Have messaged for help but am on day 2 of not being able to use what I have paid for. Support takes forever to answer any question. Just an FYI before you sub.

Response from developer

Thanks for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear that Premium wasn't unlocked automatically. Usually, we reply within 24 hours to every message we receive. So I'm sorry if the message you sent didn't reach us. What you can do to solve this, is to use the option "Restore Purchases" within the flowkey app. On an iPhone, please click on "My Songs" at the bottom of the screen. In the section "My Songs", please click on the cogwheel icon in the upper left-hand corner. A window will open where you can select "Restore Purchases" . On an iPad, you'll find the cogwheel icon in the lower left-hand corner when you enter the app. Clicking on "Restore purchases" will unlock Premium immediately. I hope this helps. And if there is anything else we can do for you, feel free to get in touch again.
