  • Very Good, A Few Suggestions

Just started using this app & bought the Premium Version. It’s very good & I love how the barcode scanner recognises so many Australian food items which is somewhat hard to come across so that’s great.

I definitely have a few suggestions that’d make my rating a max star rating.

1). When updating the quantity of a item to anything more than 1, some options disappear & others merge, such as the amount you have left/used (so always appears you have whatever the multiples are, all unused/unopened till you completely use enough to lower the quantity back to 1 again). Would be very helpful to be able to select if just 1 (or more) of your quantity has been opened/partially used & how much of each ect….

Also, you only get 1 Expiry Date input per item, even if you have multiple of the same thing. Would be extremely helpful to be able to list separate Expiry Dates or BB dates for each of your quantities, as I often have multiples of the same food item with different Expiry Dates so would be very good to be able to see which one is due to expire 1st so I can use them up accordingly & that’d automatically make receiving expiration notifications much better too cause if we were able to add different expiration dates for the multiples of the same item, notifications would automatically let us know “1 of your 5x bags of spiral pasta is about to expire” rather than it indicating “all of your 5x bags of spiral pasta are about to expire”.

2). Would love the ability to choose between “Best Before Date” & “Expiration Dates” on each item, as they’re not the same thing & I already find myself adding a little note in many of my listings to tell myself the date I listed is actually a BB date & not an expiration date which can get tedious & time consuming.

3). Would love to be able to add some additional info about purchases too. Such as particular stores we purchased things from auto saving into a drop-down menu so when we add items, there’s a personalised drop-down bar with the stores you’ve bought products from before, rather than having to type the stores in manually for every listing.

Would also love to have a box we can tick to say wether or not we bought a item on sale so we know at a glance wether the price we paid is the usual full price or not, or how much we can expect to save on average if we wait for the store’s sale price again ect.

Would be great to also see those things amended to work with the above suggestion relating to quantities too, if that comes about, so we can list if we bought some of our quantity from one store & some from another & if we paid different prices at the different stores ect, that’d be hugely helpful.

4). OMG, PLEEEASE give us the ability to choose themes (preferably) or at least colour schemes for our app. Some different font selections would be wonderful too & also dark mode that’d work in conjunction with the different themes…. Personally, I find myself seeking out the apps like notebooks, recipe storing apps, inventory apps, ect ect that look like virtual books, boxes, shelves or fridges ect or that at least have different theme selections, banners, font styles and/or colour schemes to choose from. Would absolutely love the ability to be able to see the Recipe section look like a virtual recipe book that we can flick through the pages of & click on whichever one we want to properly read from, or a virtual recipe card box or something like that, maybe in both modern or classic designs (that would be a dream, especially if we had choices), a virtual fridge, virtual freezer & virtual pantry theme would be absolutely incredible too where it looks like a fridge, freezer or pantry when we select those locations & browse through them, we can see our items laid out in a virtual fridge, pantry ect & can click on them from there. That would be my dream app to have those things, but I’d definitely also settle for different themes too, with banners, fonts and/or colour schemes to choose from. I’ve long noticed that apps that have virtual shelves & books ect, as well as theme & colour selections, tend to have rave reviews with looks being specifically mentioned a lot. No one dislikes a gorgeous looking app that draws you in that’s customisable to your tastes 😍🤞🏼

5). Would love to be able to scan in & save things like products QR codes and/or links to their sites and/or their competition entry forms ect.

6). Perhaps a private rating system too where we can privately rate a item and/or brand so we can remember what brands/types we really liked & which ones we didn’t.

7). A gardening section would also be fantastic where there’s a section just for produce that we’re growing ourselves at home. Many people are growing their own food now, especially things like herbs & spices that are small, quick & easy to grow so would be great to have a section for that & search being able to use our growing produce as ingredients we own when it’s scanning for recipes too.

8). Pin and/or Face ID locking.

9). Customisation on when we get notifications about food due to expire so we can input the exp or BB date that’s on the item & choose to be notified however long in advance of that date we like.

10). The scanner doesn’t seem to recognise most items that aren’t food items, like beauty products, shampoo, soaps, cleaning products ect. I couldn’t find categories to associate many of these types of products with either so found it difficult to add them in manually as well. It’d be great if this type of thing could be improved on so we are better able to also log things like beauty products, bath/shower products, cleaning products ect.

Sorry for the massive suggestions list. My ability to email the feedback thing wouldn’t work & I don’t often leave reviews so wanted to just get everything out at once. Great concept & I can see how much love & effort has gone in already. This app definitely has the ability to be perfect. Fingers crossed for my dream app 😂🤞🏼

  • Looks and feels great

Just started using it and it looks and feels great.

Does two things: Tracks expiries, suggests recipes..

Tested a few other apps and Kitchen Pal won 🏆 🔥👌
  • Pretty Basic

This app is a great idea. With more recipes it will improve. There are some things the app could take for granted that ppl have in their fridge already such as milk or eggs as well as cooking oil, salt/pepper. What I would like to see more of is full meals or at least well-rounded meals. What I am seeing is individual things. As an example if I were cooking a thanksgiving meal, this potato dish would be a nice side but doesn’t get to the meat of the dinner. It’s very easy to go to the grocery store to get 1 item if you have all the other ingredients for the dinner. I can’t see that many people would need this for a breakfast or lunch. I see the need more in the direction of dinners as that is the most expensive meal and easiest to give-up and get takeout or go to a restaurant/buy McDonalds. People are flocking to assemble yourself meal packs for a reason. Take a lot of the thinking out of dinner. Reduce frictions as a behavioural economist would say!

  • Sharing kitchen

It won’t let my husband share my kitchen. Please fix the issue.
  • Almost great

This is the best app of its kind, but because products are not automatically added to the shopping list when they are consumed (even though it says they have) it causes a lot of duplication. If that was fixed, i’d give it five stars!

    Developer Response

Hi! Thank you for using KitchenPal. Regarding your concern about auto-add, please accept our apologies. This is definitely unusual. Items that get deleted from the kitchen (or expire, or are running low) do get added automatically to your shopping list to help users not forget any items. This was done based on user feedback since 70-75% of shopping items stay common week to week for most users. But please note that in the latest release, our users also have the option to disable this (from the Profile page). Please drop us an email at support@kitchenpalapp.com so we can investigate this. Thank you!
  • AUS/NZ Products Not Recognised

Contrary to the app’s description, the barcode reader in this app DOES NOT recognise ANY Australia/New Zealand products commonly available at Coles (AU) or Woolworths (AU)/Countdown (NZ), etc. Not even major brands like Birds Eye, McCains, Mainland, Heinz, etc. Glad I only tried the “free” version.

Hi, thank you for using KitchenPal and we're sorry that you did not have a great experience while using the app. We currently have more than 5000 items (ingredients for recipes) & over 2 million barcodes available in our library to help users find the correct products (depending on your country our accuracy ranges from 80-90%). And in cases where we cannot find the product while scanning, you can also create it in a couple of quick steps. Could you please write to us at support@kitchenpalapp.com so we can assist you? Thank you!
  • Love it

Very good app to keep track of all items in the kitchen and pantry. Even tell you how many days till the item is expiring and how long it can last in the fridge.
  • Great idea, but combersome

I really wanted this to work. I don’t need recipes or ideas on how to use the stuff I have. I just want an easy-to-use tracker for contents in my fridge/freezer. This app had too many steps to complete to enter one item and organizing it under fridge, freezer, or pantry was also annoying.

I think I’ll stick to using my todo lists to keep track.

  • A MUST have!

I have used this app for only a few days, but I LOVE it! My husband found it after I spent about an hour writing down everything we had in our kitchen to make a shopping and meal list (we have 6 children so we have A LOT of food!). I have had so much fun scanning in our kitchen AND bathroom items. I find it super neat that you can scan in not only food BUT vitamins, shampoo, detergent, etc. It will really help me keep track of what is in our kitchen so I don't have to keep manually doing inventory.
