Great app for reading; flash card app needs some work

This is a rating for Manabi, which is actually a combination of two different apps, one is a reader for people practicing reading in Japanese, and the other is a flash card application to help you learn the new words you read in the first app. In my opinion, the first app is excellent! It has a wide variety of easy to read articles, and all you have to do is tap on any word in the app in order to see its meaning in English, as well as its pronunciation, and some sample sentences. If you run across a word that you don’t understand, you simply select “make flash card” as an option, and you can create a separate flash card automatically in the second app

The second app, on the other hand could be a lot easier to use, and more helpful. You don’t have the ability to control which cards you’re practicing, you don’t have the ability to make sets, and you don’t even have the ability to change the “flip” direction of the cards (as far as I’m aware). There are a number of different Japanese flash card apps that are much better, and unfortunately the Manabi apps don’t have the ability to transfer your sets from there to those other flash card apps. So I think there’s a lot of work to be done on the second app, but the reader is quite enjoyable and I use it almost daily.

Furigana doesn’t match audio

Reading an NHK Easy article just now, I noticed that the furigana is incorrect/does not match the audio. (Kitanai should be konai, for example.). Confusing.

Not perfect

This app seems good so far but its not anything promising. So far, it fails to correctly recognize the meaning of words. Example, when あき is used as a noun it means fall, so why does it keep bringing up a verb?

Second, it separates kana that are MEANT to be together. Example, 喫茶店 (きっさてん) is all together, it should not be separating the word like this —> きっ/さ/てん. And the last syllable will be put with the particle that comes after it making it seem like a word

Response from developer

Hi there - thanks for the valuable feedback. I'd love to improve this. Could you please reach out to me via alex@manabi.io and let me know what article / URL you're seeing these issues in so that I can reproduce?

Excellent! (N5 learner)

It’s difficult to find resources for reading practice at a beginner level, but this app has proved fantastic. The “beginner” tab is accessible to all readers. This app is now a part of my daily Japanese study routine.

Great app!

This is perfect to practice reading and listening comprehension. With Manabi integrated with it you can also learn vocabulary.

Awesome App

This app is great. I really enjoy the news stories and other channels. The ability to import via clipboard and URL is fantastic. Thank you so much.

Great app

Had an issue with the bookmarks on my iPad Pro, but the problem disappeared after a reinstall. This is definitely one of the best apps out there for learners of all levels.

Hi Tokugawa Ty - sorry about the issue you're running into. In the future please reach out to me via support channels so that I can better help you. I'm working on an update right now but it would help to know more about your situation - can you please reach out to alex@manabi.io and let me know what your username is, what device you're using, and any other info about what you were doing before the crash started happening? Thanks

Really helps me read Japanese.

Great app that shows furigana and English words.

Great product!

This is an excellent way to get into immersion & reading.

Having definitions, readings & audio of a word available with a touch as you’re reading, then being able to simply add said word to a deck of flash cards, not only takes the pain out of looking things up, but also makes whatever you’re reading instantly more accessible & comprehensible.

Being someone who often spends more time on my phone than my computer, this app is exactly what I‘ve been looking for.

Crashes after new update

I really like your app, but it crashed after new update (December 2). I cannot even run it. When I tap on it, I see a logo for a second, and my screen dims a little... and that’s it. I have iPhone X, iOS 13.2.3

Response from developer

Hi Mikhail_Z - so sorry about that! You hit a snag with an edge case. I've just released an update hotfix that resolves the crash you ran into. Please feel free to reach out via email or Messenger in the future for support and feedback. Cheers and thanks for the kind words and detailed bug report.
