  • Good idea in theory but...

According to their website and FAQ, the payments they make are towards the principle amount, and not the interest, and thus decreases the amount of your debt faster. However, my loan provider, Nelnet, has a record that the amount paid for last month was towards the interest, not the principle.

I also tried looking at my past round-ups of the month prior, but nothing comes up. I don’t know what’s going on. On top of all that, the diagram that shows the projected amount of student loans seems to be shifted towards the right and off my screen. It might just be my phone, as it is a model that is more than 4 years old and I refuse to get a new one until it dies, but all the other apps I have seem to adjust to my phone with no problem.

I have sent in a question to their support team in the app a week ago and have not heard back at all. It seems they have too few people handling customers and not enough foresight to handle the job they gave themselves. They may also be operating on too low a cost. I’m going to give them till the end of the month to answer me. If they don’t, I’ll pause all payments and ask for a refund.

Edit: They have contacted me before the end of the month, but they haven’t really adequately addressed my concerns. I’m not deleting the app yet, but I have paused payments. They still take forever to respond, though. They should honestly change the statement on their chat function from “within a few hours” to “within 1-7 business days”.

  • Will be closing my account soon

I had my transactions rounded up for September. They didn’t pull money out of the bank account until mid October. And since then, there has been no payment to Sallie Mae at all. I do not trust this app. All I have gotten was from support was “We are working with your processor (Sallie Mae) to make sure they can receive the loan. (Receive the loan? Maybe they meant to say payment) This is new for them as well.”

This should have been worked out before taking money from people if the people behind the app are still trying to figure out how to make the app do what the app said it would do. Have requested a refund and will be closing the account soon. In the meantime, I have turned off roundups since I have no trust in the app with using my money properly.

  • As a current college student, I recommend this app.

Upon downloading Chipper I was nervous about handing my information over to an app, but setting my account up was extremely simple. Any issues I came across were handled by the extremely kind support team!! They all seem to be genuinely passionate about the student loan crisis, which is quite refreshing to see.

Overall, the app has worked very well for me. I’ve allotted a decent amount of money toward my student loans! I’m grateful I get a chance to handle my debt while still in school. It makes me feel like I’m actually doing something and not just letting dollars add up.

  • Definitely needs more than work

I was exciting to use this app. The concept behind it is amazing but doesn’t actually work. I’ve been using the app for a couple months and nothing seems to work. It doesn’t keep track of what is actually accounting for when rounding but the amount of my roundups keeps rising. They have taken money out of my account to pay for loans but doesn’t show on loans as a payment. At this moment I have $26 taken from me with no response from the team for some time now on where it went. Definitely would take caution downloading this app.

  • Do not put your bank info in this app

I’m starting to think this app is a scam. Money has been taken out of my bank account by chipper but there has been no payments on my student loans. The app says I have no transactions, even though I’ve had it since August. There should be MANY transactions in my history. I don’t like that I cannot see what my roundups are due to this glitch.
I have tried chatting with “customer service” for weeks, with no response. As soon as I get my money back or I see that it has been applied to my student loan account, I will be unlinking my debit card and deleting the app. I thought this app would make things easier, but it only made it stressful, difficult, and confusing.

  • Good customer service, terrible app

I’m not one to put my bank account and loan data on an app but I decided that maybe Chipper could help me to cut down on my student loans. I put in all my information but the app said that I haven’t made any transactions in the last month, even though I clearly did on my bank statements. And it said it would ran up my charges and save those few cents towards my loan, but no avail. Although the customer service is great and responded quickly, I was promised several times that my account would be looked into but nothing has been fixed. It has been a month and I’m not confident in this app at all. I will be closing my account. Honestly, I suggest you don’t waste your time or find an app that works better.

  • Love y’all!

Speak with the staff! They are so helpful if you let them be. I was freaking out about graduation and all these loans piling up but this makes actively paying them off an easy experience. Yes, there will be glitches; it’s a new app, duh! But it is getting better and the company is really listening to your feedback to make sure it is. How many other apps can say that?

  • Not ready for prime time

A financial app that connects to your bank accounts should go far to reassure you that your connection is secure, and explain to you exactly how they intend to charge you fees. This app does neither. Interface is shockingly basic, FAQs are illegible, and it is not immediately clear how to remove your accounts (hint: swipe left). I understand through chats with developers that they are still working on this app however it was obviously released way before it was ready. Fine if an app is a game but this app connects to financial institutions and that is not acceptable. I do not feel comfortable recommending it to anyone at this time.

Hi! My name is Andrea and I'm a developer here on the Chipper team. I'm really sorry to hear you're having issues with the app. We are working hard to make sure we are building transparency and trust with our users as they interact with Chipper at every stage in the process. Our goal is really to help crush the Student Loan Debt crisis that is impacting millions of people throughout the country. We are working to improve our UI - and I just fixed the FAQ page last night - I would love your feedback on that - and I'm hoping it's legible for you now! :) Feel free to respond with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your time! Best, Andrea
  • FAIL

I was really excited about this app, but it turned out to be huge failure. It doesn’t work on some smaller phones like iPhone SE because the screen is too small. When you try to add your phone number, there’s no way to move the keyboard down so you can press the continue option. Therefore you’re finished before you’ve even started. I’ve looked at a lot of the complaints and the developers don’t even take the time to reply to people. They seem lazy and uninterested in fixing anything. Lazy developers. Lots of reported glitches. Deleting this app immediately. That's why the bad reviews outweigh the good ones. Shameful. Try the Snowball app instead.
