  • Best WaniKani app

I love this app, and it includes some items you need UserScripts for on the WaniKani website. Such as an in-depth upcoming review times, review ordering, more fonts, allow cheating (for typos), … Only thing missing are the recently added review recent lessons and review recent mistakes. Stroke order and pitch accent would be a fantastic addition, as well. This is already 5 stars, but I’d be over the moon for those! ありがとうございます!
  • Spectacular app with hiragana/katakana confustion

Amazing app. I absolutely recommend this for anyone using WakiKani.

That said, this app creates some confusion between hiragana and katakana. When typing words by the kana, I expect to see the hiragana for most of these words. Instead, the corresponding katakana is displayed when I type using an English iPad Magic Keyboard. It doesn’t affect whether my answer is correct or not, but it’s an annoyance. Also, it seems to do this for Kanji but not vocabulary. I can remove my iPad from the Magic Keyboard and switch to a Japanese keyboard, but this isn’t how I intend to use the app and my iPad. Likewise, in places where I’m reading the furigana it also displays the katakana rather than the hiragana. These two related issues seem like an error of the app (as opposed to user error.)

*Update - The devs have informed me there is a setting for this. Now I just feel silly. Thank you for the response!

    Developer Response

Hi! Thanks for the review! This is actually a setting in the app: “Use Katakana for Onyomi” in the “Radicals, Kanji & Vocabulary” section in the settings screen.
  • Really great

I love WaniKani and have been using this app for a while with great success. In the past there were some noticeable bugs but the developer has clearly been making updates. I actually didn’t realize until today that this app is not made by the wanikani team! It’s very well integrated, and close to the full website experience. My biggest request would be to add the “extra study” section!!! Second request would be stroke order chart. If the extra study section was added it would be 5 stars!
  • Updated review: Love this app!

I used to absolutely love this app. The interface is great and runs smoothly. But, for some reason after the last update I’m unable to type っ (the small tsu). If I type “xtsu” it just gives “xつ.” It is way too much of a pain to switch to the Japanese keyboard or copy and paste a small tsu when you’re going through literally hundreds of flash cards. I really hope they fix this because this was by far the best WaniKani app out there but now I can’t even use it without getting frustrated.

5/9/22: The developers responded and instead you can type “tt” to get the small tsu. This is great! I can’t recommend any other app for WaniKani more.

    Developer Response

Hey! You should be able to type the small tsu by typing “ttsu” (double t). Hope that helps!
  • Would Be Great if I Could Actually See New Reviews/Lessons

I’d love to give it a higher score, but I just can’t. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the app a few times but I can’t fix a major problem. It almost never updates, so I can’t do my reviews and lessons. As of right now, it’s been telling me I still have 86 reviews and 0 lessons after a level up I finished 4+ hours ago. I did those 86 reviews and my lessons on another app, but it still hasn’t caught on hours later. It doesn’t matter how many times I refresh or close the app, it doesn’t want to show me my new reviews/lessons.

After recently downloading Jakeipuu, I’ve also noticed some of the reviews don’t go through when studied on this app. I liked the interface well enough, but if I can’t use it because it won’t fetch the new info, there’s nothing I can do. Will probably have to delete it soon and fully transition to Jakeipuu.
  • Almost perfect

I prefer this app over the Wanikani site because I can adjust the settings, but I wish there was more options for the lesson part. The review section has a lot of settings that I can change, but for lessons there’s not much. Like, this app took out the word use/common word combos section for the lessons, which I wish there was an option to keep. Also, you can’t take notes for the lessons which is kind of annoying. I don’t use that feature often but sometimes it comes in handy.
I love that there’s different font options though, since that’s the main reason I dowloaded this app.
  • Vacation mode bug?

I love this app and I’ve been using it for well over a year, but recently there seems to be this bug where no reviews are showing up on the app, and says that I’m put in “vacation mode,” which I didn’t enable at the time. However on the actual website, it looks like I’m able to access all my reviews just fine. This has happened at least 3 times in the past 2 months and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this same issue. I’ve gone on to the site and turned vacation mode on and off and that works to mixed success.
  • Great app, two suggestions

    1. During reviews, I often want to check the details of a kanji that I just got right, but the app only lets you view the details after you complete both the reading and the meaning. For example, let's say I get the meaning right but I know it has multiple meanings, I often want to check those after I got it right to remind myself of its other meanings. For readings likewise, I want to remind myself of the other readings even though I got one of the readings right. Ideally when looking back it would show only the meaning or reading info, depending on what you just did, like how the website splits that between tabs.

    2. Editable notes, I often add notes but since I can't in this app I sometimes reach for the website instead when it comes to lessons.

Other than this, having the app notifications to do reviews really changes the game!
  • One thing missing

Just started using WaniKani and this app is an amazing alternative to their mobile website. I love it so far!

The only thing missing, in my opinion, is that it doesn’t specify if you’re learning kun-yomi or on-yomi when learning new kanji. It seems you learn one pronunciation at a time. It would be really nice to know which was which. I’m not sure if this is a result of the info missing from WaniKani in general or if it’s just missing from this app, but I imagine it could get confusing learning so many different pronunciations and not knowing which is kunyomi and which is onyomi.
  • Love the app! Just missing one key feature for me

This app has been super helpful and great to use. However, there’s one feature that would help make it even easier for me to use. I have poor eyesight, and would really benefit from being able to increase text size everywhere in the UI. I have to use the screen magnifier to read text currently since it only applies to the review item font size.
