  • Has changed the way I do my studying.

First off, this app is amazing in comparison to trying to use the mobile site. I am continually impressed with the updates that also continue to come to the application, my recent favorites being darkmode, the hiding of examples English translations during lessons, and probably more than I can’t even remember. I am a huge iPad Pro 12.9” user, and this has full featured split screen and side app support!!! AAAAA, literally amazing. This means I can easily have Tsurukame off to the side to reference while I use a note taking app like Goodnotes in the primary, larger section of the screen. I lunge for my iPad Pro now everytime I get a WaniKani notification, because this app has truly made studying fun and more relaxing. No more looking up and down from monitor to notebook while I try to practice writing, it’s all right there. On one.

BUT... could we maybe see some Jisho integration where stroke order is shown on the lesson pages and maybe review screens when you get an item wrong? Or a drop down to show it in those screens? That would literally make this app 100% feature complete for me. Take my money. (Like actually though, can I donate somehow?)
  • I wouldn’t even do WaniKani if this app didn’t exist

i’ve been doing WaniKani on and off for about a year and a half now. When I first started I tried to use the website, but it was so awful of a user experience and totally demotivated me. But then I found this app and I can say with confidence that it has definitely enhanced my experience to a new dimension. I wouldn’t even attempt WaniKani without this app.
  • WaniKani Anywhere

This app serves as the perfect replacement for WaniKani on the go, implementing a wide range of features that echos the common scripts used by most desktop regulars.

Prior to this revision, the estimated time to level up was not calculated properly and has since been fixed; developer is dedicated to creating and maintaining the go-to companion app for WaniKani.

Is there any possible future plans for a BunPro companion app as well? Incredible work.
  • Absolutely wonderful app. Better than desktop will ever be.

Has so many features not available on the desktop without plugins.
    - Including review level sorting
    - 1-1 mode
    - Lesson priority
    - Randomized Kanji font

Not to mention all the quality of life features that show the dev of this app really knows what they are doing. Including:
    - Night theme
    - Keyboard switching per input (e.g. QWERTY for English words and JP keyboard for hiragana input)
    - Particle explosions that make me happy

    My only feature requests:
    - Sorting by type, so that kanji and radicals appear before vocab (regardless of level)
    - Support kanji input for vocab answers , so that the iPhone voice input can be used for Japanese words too
    - Mega particle explosion for burned items :)

Thank you for making such a wonderful app. That I use everyday. Please add a donate link too
  • Wow

Just wow. I previously gave this app 5 stars, but I also added an obnoxious wish list to my review. This list included something that I’d put squarely in the “nice-to-have” column: auto-selection of a Japanese keyboard for readings.

I just noticed that this feature was added. Here I was thinking that this was probably a ridiculous request, and yet here we are. Thank you for working so hard to make this app the best it can be. It is truly the essential WaniKani experience. Cheers!
  • Please let us flip sideways...!!

Great App and without it, wanikani would be much more cumbersome to use.
But it would soooo helpful, if I could flip my phones sideways and type with both hands.
I implore you - this would make wanikani so much more pleasant to use on the go.
People would also make less mistakes when typing.
Thank you for your work. I am level 5 now, and I very much hope to see this upgrade in the future (before I reach level 60 :)).
  • Excellent App

This is a great app, I love that it reminds me to study kanji regularly, I don’t have to plan ahead/think about it or set aside any time and can just do it during breaks. It holds me accountable! I studied Japanese in college so I’m familiar with the level 1-3 kanji, I’m trying to get up to level 4 and beyond so I can master those more difficult ones (and also finally learn all the radicals for good!)

EDIT: it’s early in the morning, originally I said there was a typo in the answer—the typo was mine! Lol! Never mind, this app is great. Thanks again for all your hard work! 頑張ってね :)
  • Easy to use and fixes key problems with website

This app is incredible! Cleanly designed and easy to use. Importantly it fixes what I consider to be Wanikani’s biggest issue: being marked incorrect for typos and mistaken readings of single kanji vocab words.

    For example:

The Kanji 車 is read しゃ, but is also a vocab word くるま.

On the desktop version, if it’s asking for the vocab and you accidentally type しゃ it would mark it wrong and reset your progress. On this app, however, it will give you a gentle reminder that you’ve mixed up the readings and let you correct yourself. Likewise if you meant to type くるま but accidentally typed くるな, again, desktop version marks it incorrect and you lose progress. This app gives you the option to count it as correct and move on.

This removes a lot of frustration from studying and I'm overjoyed with it!
  • Excellent app but has lost an important add on

I like the app and am getting better faster than other apps I have tried. Problem popped up recently when they prevented updates to the wanikani add in app. I used it almost exclusively. The other two potions of the system are hard to see on the phone and lack some useful functionality. If the font size is not improved I may start looking for a new app....
  • Absolute Garbage!

The fonts are so small, I can’t see it at all, even Airplayed to my television (which is how I normally do WaniKani to see it better, except on the better app, ALLICRAB, which has for some reason vanished from the app store and become not functional tonight.) I got this app as a temp stopgap waiting for the Allicrab app to be repaired, and my scores are plummeting from not being able to see what is being typed, combined with often dropped key stroke signals from my bluetooth keyboard, typos, and typing the Japanese in the English and vice versa. The screen doesn’t rotate either, so it’s a moronic illegibly fine print bandaid in the middle of the screen. I’m squinting painfully at my TV SCREEN! Lessons are hobbled, illegible microprint that don’t advance. This thing is hell on earth. After one sitting, I’m considering leaving WaniKani altogether if Allicrab is not restored- that app was the only thing that made brutal WaniKani somewhat bearable.
