Not a fan

Scooters were slow compared to every other scooter service, no go zones were cumbersome and annoying

Don’t ever use

Put my card details on the app used the scooter for 12 minutes didn’t take money out my card so was confused because I had my card details on app then said I owed money and wouldn’t let me use mine or my mums card. Don’t use will most likely try scam u, and btw I have money on my card)

Unable to detect actual location, lock the bile in the middle of ride

The app has a lousy location detection. The scooters were locked when we are not even at no ride area. Wasted time and money

Hi Beam, I wouldn’t wanted to review this but as your customer service talked rude and there is no reply from email as well so i have to tell here, I booked 2 scooters in my app on easter Saturday in Brisbane, we used it for max 45 minutes, than I pressed finish ride in my app, app got a white screen but didn’t finish my ride, i tried to finish ride in app more than 10 times but it always got stuck in white screen and nothing happened, I called your customer care 3 time, they said wait for 10 mins, it will automatically finish it, i parked at your safety 0.50$ zone, and waited but nothing happened, i went to dinner after thinking it will close automatically, but it charged me for more than 2 hours, it was deducting my money already while standing on street. Because of poor customer service nobody responded my complaint and yet to refund the money they took due to app fault. You have great service but things like this when not sorted out gives us a scam vibe, I don’t want any other person happening same from you.

overcharged bank account

I will update this review to 5 stars if my overcharging issue is resolved.
Hired a few times and the scooters themselves and the application are great, but my total hire charges for past 2 days totalled $52 yet my bank account has been charged a total of $89 in transactions. Not sure if it’s related to when I did a group hire of two scooters and the second scooter locked in the slow zone and refused to unlock when pushing it back to central area. brake was locked on and had
to push 1-2KMs with great difficulty to end the hire timer. was then able to get second person to install the app and we hired each scooter individually and charged individually then they worked flawlessly for the next hour.

If I can just get my excess charges refunded I would be 5 stars happy with the whole service.
Submitted two help requests inside the app itself, first one when the scooter refused to unlock after locking and the second one after seeing excess charges to my bank account

Hi OppLocker, thanks for your rating. You (and your group ride buddies) may notice a fee being charged to your card after linking it to the app even when no ride was taken. This is only a temporary hold used to verify your card, and it is commonly known as a pre-authorization fee. It will adjust to the amount captured after completing a ride

Had tried a company in Europe, 1 in Sydney & 1 another in Brisbane …Beam though was by far the most convenient, it’s got both a Phone holder AND a bottle holder!
So easy to sign up…quick set up, simple use of getting the scooter going and the Beam App. Super stable and the smoothest ride out of the 4 different companies.
Word of warning for a person whose never used an electric scooter of any type before though - these are super quick & super responsive, great if you’re in a hurry - would’ve scared me if it was my first use of electric.

I love beam bikes, but I know that the bikes are tall for me even when on the lowest setting and the helmets are too large even when adjusted smaller. It’s loose on my head so I ended up having to buy a helmet and bring one each ride. I’m a reasonably tall woman too so I can’t imagine what it’s like for riders shorter than me. Please make smaller bikes available for the remaining 50% of users! My first ride ended up being with a faulty bike that kept slowing down for no reason which was quite frustrating, but beam support fully refunded me so it made up for it. Thanks for making greener, more fun travel options a possibility in Sydney! Hopefully we can get a wider network across Sydney with time. Best of luck!

Edit: the bikes need a lot more maintenance to keep them in tip top shape for riders to use. A lot of times I have found issues with the bikes such as: the handlebar is loose, one of the pedals is missing, it’s covered in cobwebs, the brakes are not working, or the tyre is flat, et cetera. This means having to walk for considerable distances to locate another bike that has enough charge to get you from A to B. The reason for wanting to use an electric bike share for me personally was to avoid the issue of maintenance or the likelihood of theft. Anyway, this is something to consider if you’re wanting to swap your car/ public transport for bike share. Happy riding!

So Bad

Used Beam in Port Douglas, only to find out that they hit you with a $25 charge to even unlock the scooter. Tried to start a group ride, didn’t work. Billed $25. Started a group ride. Billed $50 (when it should have counted the $25 from before). Half way thru the ride it decided to lock one of the two scooters and refused to unlock it. I had to drag the locked scooter 3 blocks in 32 degree heat to then be told that I was not in a parking zone (despite literally staring at the ‘Beam e-scooter parking zone sign and the line of scooters parked under it). Tried support in the app, which phone a call centre who hung up on me. Tried the call again and was informed that the only help is via in-app feedback, which doesn’t appear to be monitored in anything close to real time and replies come via email. Zero stars if I could.

Better than the rest

Easy to ride, start, park, lights are good at night for recreational use, scooter slows down in slow zone safely, speeds up in the most appropriate places, heaps around to use if just going up the road to shop,
Universal pass is my fav add on to this app. Can always find one charged with more than 50%. Use it at least twice a week during this lockdown. When going up hill at full speed for a person of my weight is slow but a little kick push for exercise never hurts haha
