Emporia L2 Charger
My previous EVSE required a new relay but due to parts issues there was a delay in getting it repaired. I knew I wanted a L2 charger with remote capability that I could control with my phone, an app that told me how the charging was going and also recorded previous charges and costs. I also wanted a 11 kWh of power while also needing to dial it down to 7 kWh if I took it with me to the cottage. Having reviewed a lot of other chargers I found what I needed in the Emporia. The charging cable is much more heavy duty and I don’t worry about driving over it (when travelling I drive the rear tire over it to prevent easy theft when I have it plugged in). I live in Ontario so there is a draw back to the thick cable. In winter it is harder to coil up for storage as it becomes very stiff but it’s just an inconvenience not a show stopper.
I find it easier for me to use the app to control charging times as opposed to setting up the car’s computer to do the same thing. So basically I get home and plug the car in with the charger off. Then when I’m planning to go somewhere I just start the charge from my phone. I had a 60amp breaker installed so I can use the 48 amp power. This gives me 11 kWh of power and the car tells me that’s equal to 62 kms/hr. The only problem I have had is when my cell tower internet goes down. Then there is no way to turn the Emporia charger on. On my ‘Open EVSE’ there was a button on the front to start the charge so you didn’t require the app to do it. This charger could benefit from that. We use this on another EV (daily driver) and for it I have the app schedule the charge for the early mornings.
This charger is used on a 2016 Nissan Leaf and a 2024 VW ID4 Pro AWD.
All in all I give this EVSE 5 stars.

Emporia Energy Monitor
Love this little device! My solar array is 12 years old, so it doesn’t have real time energy monitoring of what’s going through the utility meter. This device by Emporia takes care of that problem. I now can see real time energy use, or what my solar producing and any moment on my cell phone. The only issue I’ve had which is kind of minor, sometimes when the device updates it can’t reconnect to the utility smart meter. so that requires a call to their department that handled such connections and it has to be reestablished. That happens maybe once a year. But other than that, the device works perfectly.

Works!
You go to the app and you see your electrical situation. I have smart plugs that I now use all the time. I have a solar array and it’s easy to see at the month level whether I meet, exceed, or fall short of usage with solar production.
There are some features that aren’t super user friendly, the time scale is by the second, minute, hour, day, week? Month, year and sometimes I just want to stretch the scale. Like how you zoom into a photo on your phone. And the quantity scale automatically adjusts quickly so it’s hard to compare across time because the scale is constantly changing.
This is a hot arena, I think someday they’ll publish real-time data on electricity price so you can use, or produce judiciously.
Batteries next?

Great energy monitoring system.
This system is great only wish there was a way to see the previous month, week, and day instead of a graft and data that is available to download is not breaking down by day, week, month, or year as I would hope from downloading it. It ok for what it is but hope developers will make it better!
If you care about where you use power
Buy this, it’s super because I know where and who is eating my power. Water heaters if electric are brutal. I shut mine down when not in use.
Worked great, until…
It didn’t. I don’t know if it was an update that changed or a bug, but it will only charge after 8pm and I have to reset my car every time. Go out, turn car on/off, unplug, shut the cap door and then plug in maybe multiple times and then it will work. I used to come home, plug in and no problems. For the last two months no matter what schedule or when I set it, it will not charge. If I set my car to charge immediately and the app, it still won’t charge until after 8pm. If I set it for 11pm-4am and just plug it in, it still won’t turn on and my car will not accept the charge. It’s so annoying!!!

Monitor your energy use/generation
A great way of seeing what is happening in your home
Great- Energy Monitor, Solar, Ev Charger.
Using a Emporia VUE to monitor with the EV charger and optimize routine for excess solar.
The app works great to control the charger directly & recording of the data at the cloud works super. the implementation of the charger being able to automatically increase or decrease its charge rate as other large loads turn on or off simply fantastic to keep your utility bill down and maximize your own solar into your EV tank. I worked in aerospace power (space & aircraft) , installed a few ground solar and wife is IT/coms engineer, Tesla & Ford Lightning EV. Emporia awesome product suite to keep the bandits of PG&E a little bit out of your pocketbook. This Emporia charger & monitor will pay for itself in a few months.

Haven’t fixed a easy bug in more than a year
For more than a year, I’ve been reporting a caching bug to Emporia support and even debugged it for them. If you have multiple EV chargers, switching from first to second will still show charging history for the first one. If I kill the app and go to EV charger #2 straight, I get the right charging history for EV #2. Clearly a app caching issue that’s an easy fix. Why the heck they would not fix a simple bug like this it is beyond me. Clearly support and product manager are not collaborating

Useful app and system
I have several of theses in my two houses . Really easy to set up and very solid data performance. Does not drop signal. Updates quickly
