2.11.5

June 13, 2024

Twenty new items added to the app's database and revision of color coding of type and icons to support a healthy gut microbiome diet as follows. All plants that can be included as one of the 30 different types of plants per week recommended by experts for a healthy gut microbiome are highlighted in green type and with a green leaf icon in the food popups. The most prebiotic plants (ie, those that are particularly beneficial for the gut microbiome) are highlighted in a darker green type. Fermented foods that contain beneficial live microbes to become part of the gut microbiome (probiotics) are highlighted in gold type and with a gold microbe icon in the food popups. Foods that are likely to be ultra-processed (UPFs) — ie, contain ingredients not found in a home kitchen such as preservatives, flavorings, and emulsifiers — and are likely to have a harmful effect on the gut microbiome are highlighted in red type and with a red warning triangle in the food popups.

Description of 5 Nutrients Counter & Tracker

Use this app to control carb, saturated fat, fiber, protein and calorie intake to protect from or manage obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, high LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, some cancers, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's dementia and Parkinson's disease, and mental health illnesses including depression, anxiety, autism and schizophrenia. Set daily calorie, carb, saturated fat, fiber & protein targets based on guidance provided in the app and your preferences for weights of food (g or oz) and display of nutrient content in foods and beverages (ie, %target/serving, g/100g or g/1oz, or %target/100g or %target/1oz). You can change the targets at any time as you wish or as advised by a healthcare provider. Record food and beverage consumption using the barcode scanner, dictation, search or by favoriting foods and using the serving sizes provided, which can be changed at any time. Tap the notepad to add notes. Monitor daily and long-term progress, export data to share with healthcare providers, synchronize data with other First Line Medical Communications Ltd nutrient counter apps, and share data with Apple's HealthKit.  Add your own foods and recipes and change serving sizes to personalize the app's 350-item database for you. The app also provides nutritional information for many healthy foods and supports a healthy gut microbiome diet using color-coded type and icons as follows: 1. Plants that can be included as one of the 30 different types of plants per week recommended by experts for a healthy gut microbiome are highlighted in green type and with a green leaf icon in the food popups. The most prebiotic plants (ie, those that are particularly beneficial for the gut microbiome) are highlighted in a darker green type. 2. Fermented foods that contain beneficial live microbes to become part of the gut microbiome (probiotics) are highlighted in gold type and with a gold microbe icon in the food popups. 3. UPFs cause obesity for a variety of reasons and their harmful effect on the gut microbiome is linked to inflammation and many diseases including type 2 diabetes, high LDL "bad" cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, inflammatory diseases, cancer, depression, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's dementia and Parkinson's disease.

Reviews of 5 Nutrients Counter & Tracker

  • Just what’s needed

It’s not super fancy, but few apps let you track saturated fat as a primary target and this makes it reasonably easy once you set up recipes and your most used foods. I live that it’s not a subscription service.

    Developer Response

Many thanks for this review. Glad you like the one-off fee with free updates model. We release these free updates every couple of months to improve functionality and to incorporate improvements in the technology as they become available.
  • Please add more food types

I love the app because of the ease of use and value. No recurring charges, yay! Scanning labels is fast and easy. I tend to cook from scratch and have found the list of ingredients is not as robust as I would hope. Can you add things like sablefish, Alaska wild salmon, cilantro, jalapeño and other peppers, various nuts and seeds. Thanks

    Developer Response

Great that you love the app, but surprised at your comment about foods to add to the database, because most of them (red, green & yellow peppers, cilantro, and a range of commonly used nuts and seeds) are already in the database. The only exceptions are sablefish, jalapeño and Alaskan wild salmon (though the database includes Atlantic wild salmon). We used to include sablefish but removed many of the less commonly used fishes many years ago to include other more common foods to avoid making the database too long and cumbersome. The app does provide the opportunity to customise the app by adding additional foods through the "Add food" tab. Then add the nutrients as listed on USDA FoodData Central at https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/. Please do contact us at support@firstlinemedicalcommunications.co.uk if you need assistance adding foods to the app.
