No longer feels hyper local

I used to be an admin for a buy nothing group years ago and it was so fun because the communities were hyper local and we got to know our neighbors. I just moved to a new neighborhood to find out that my local Facebook group has been offshored onto this app. It doesn’t seem like you can set parameters to be local neighbors only. Now I see posts from over an hour away from me. This is nice for those looking for more stuff, but this isn’t what I remember buy nothing’s purpose being.

Just downloaded

I’m giving this a three because I just downloaded it and I am still trying to get the hang of everything. So far I think it’s a great idea I just want to see if the app works like it’s supposed to. I will update my review as soon as I see if my first post and first reply to another post gets any attention. I think it’s a great idea and a great concept. Thanks.

great community, terrible app

i love engaging with the buy nothing community, but it would be nice if the app was consistently functional. sometimes i get randomly booted in the middle of using the app and have to log back in (which usually doesn’t work even with the correct password and the “reset password” link takes like 24 hours to send). often the app will just sit and load for ages, eventually crashing, and you just have to try again in a half hour. in messages, it very regularly shows the wrong name (e.g. a conversation with person A shows the name of person B at the top). i very rarely have an interaction with the app that doesn’t end in me wanting to throw my phone across the room, which is a real bummer because this is such an important community to stay connected with.

Glitchy

I love this app, but it glitches so much and deleted some of my messages/posts so I don’t know who the people were that I was exchanging my with. And it logged me out and wouldn’t let me log back in so I had to delete the entire app and redownload it. So weird. Am sticking with the app through a few more of these things. Super wonderful app though. Lots of great people

For the love of god and all things left good in the world

I never write reviews because most of the time an app doesn’t warrant me enough to do so; however, I really do love this app and the concept and I want to see the developers follow through on what it means to have community. I’ve gotten to meet some really wonderful people, but god the constant crashing, loading circle of doom, freezing, being forced to log in only to be logged out some time after, and so forth—complete bootycheeks. I’ve never wanted to bang my head against a wall so much until I came across this app. And I know I’m not the only one, so, whatever the developers are doing, please, I beg of you: fix this app. Don’t disappoint the good people that utilize this tool by skipping out on quality.

Also, a “repost” function would be incredibly useful so people don’t have to copy and paste a whole new post. Especially for those who have multiple items, it’s time consuming and could be much quicker.

I’d really love to change this rating, so I hope you’re reading this and taking it into consideration. It really is a great app, but my patience is wearing thin from how much it has persisted.

Great app but very slow

Pro: It’s great to get rid of unused furniture and help others. Especially last minute when plans change. Cons: The app loads very poorly. Viewing this as a software engineer the loading times are unnecessarily slow and they need to fix their load times because it impacts user experience. As a client using the app, the load times and the lack of notifications at random times is annoying. I would have uninstalled the app for this. This happened last night were a person was messaging me and I never saw or received a notification. Only reason I knew because I thought it was odd and looked at the app to see a bunch of messages but no notifications came thru. I know it wasn’t my phone because other notifications from other apps showed fine. This is why I rated the app 2 stars instead of 5. When the fix the errors I’ll change it.

Above and beyond

Many thanks to Kathy M. in Westchester for the composter. Not only is it this great give something I’ve coveted for a while, when I was unable to fit it into my car, Kathy offered to deliver it to my home, and then walked me through the composting basics. I promptly set it up, and can’t wait for my first batch to cook!

Unreliable

Lost track of the many functions that are broken: notifications unreliable, settings don’t stick, slow to update with new posts, logs out user randomly, requires multiple attempts to successfully re-log in. Still it provides a valuable resource and promotes admirable values. Wish they would squash the bugs.

App is almost non functional

The concept of buy nothing is great. I honestly wish I could find a Facebook group for my neighborhood though so I could use it instead. This app is almost impossible to use. It logs me out constantly, crashes constantly and pages don’t load. Notifications generally don’t work which makes communicating with gift recipients really hard. I also wish I could default to local view only. I’m still going to keep trying because the concept is so great but I’m close to giving up.

Good idea, bad app

The app has some bugs, it can log me out and then refuse passwords, but I found if you restart your phone it lets you back in. I give away things very quickly and love the idea!
