Reviews of TIAA

  • Too much data, too little information

This app excels in providing things you don’t care about while hiding things that you do. In many cases, the functionality is so stripped down that it is necessary to use the online website rather than the app. (The app happily reveals this to you.)

If you would like to see the current balance of each investment in your portfolio, the app can happily provide that. But to get a history of which have been performing well — without being overwhelmed by a long list of investment products — is no easy task. How about showing the best performing investments and the worst, tracked over a year or two?

When I take a deduction out of an account, it’s not easy to track where the money came from. If an investment product isn’t performing well, but that’s where I borrowed money from, not really a problem, right?

Just too much of the wrong thing and not enough of what investors need.
  • Goal feature tricks you into annuity

Beware of the “Goal” feature. You may think you’re just viewing a suggested change in investment strategy to reach a goal, but are actually agreeing to transfer funds. With one click to exit an “informational” page you can make a total transfer of all your investments. One of the auto purchases, which reeks of fraud, is an irrevocable TIAA annuity. The annuity is particularly galling because there is no disclosure of terms, no informed consent. One click and all your funds are moved and you’re left cleaning up the mess and living with the long-term consequences. TIAA should remove the “Goal” feature, remove the ability to transfer funds on what appears to be an informational page, or provide more disclosure so the customer has fully informed consent. The fact that they are locking you into one of their own highly profitable products for a lifetime makes this problem legally dubious. I’ve filed a complaint to annul the annuity I was tricked into but it hasn’t been resolved. Beware of this app
  • Blinding white UI with tiny menu choices

Tiny menu choices that do not honor Apple IOS dynamic text (see the Profile tab on iPad), and no support for Dark Mode, leave poor hapless users squinting though a blinding white UI. There's a whole lot of wasted space where larger text could be. I'm an IOS developer and would be embarrased to release such a poor user experience.

Users are better off using Safari and logging into TIAA's website. At least then you can use a Safari extension (like Noir) to force a Dark Mode background, and use Cmd + to make the website text larger.
