  • Stay Away

I started Progressive 6mo contract May 1. I had a minor accident in May that hadn’t even been fixed yet and they sent me an email June 18th that they had cancelled my policy as of June 17th. I had no warning or notification. I called to understand what in the world was happening, the underwriting department “supposedly” sent me a mailed letter indicating to contact them or be cancelled. I had received my policy documents and ID cards in the mail, so I know they had the correct address.
I had called nearly weekly while going through the claims process, with 4 different claims adjusters assigned to my case at different times; including one sick as a dog barely able to speak. None ever mentioned this notification nor did they ever send me an email about it.
I fully believe they never sent a letter and wanted to cancel the policy to have me re-quote with an agent at a higher price since I had recently started the policy.

They use scam-ish tactics, please stay away. While some may have the insurance paper and never need to use it, they will cancel policy, raise premiums, and give the run around at the end of the day if you do ever need what you pay for.
  • They NEVER come

September 2023, I joined Progressive. It was easy to get coverage. I paid for the term, 6 months. In this time, I tried to file 3 claims. I’m in a city alone, so if I have car troubles there is literally no one else to call. Each time, there were issues with filing the claims, and I was left to resort to out of pocket options for things the insurance should have covered, like helping to change a flat tire.
3 out of those 6 months, the vehicle was not utilized. Fast forward march of 2024, I renewed the policy, this time not able to afford the term. I called, spoke with someone, was able to add a rental car, and was told a due date. Called to make a payment the day before the due date, only to find out the insurance had lapsed. No notation or record of talking to someone a month prior, but the added vehicle was on the insurance, so obviously I spoke to someone. Did the no loss agreement and made payment. Recently had car troubles and requested a tow. App said I wasn’t covered, and I had to pay 140 for a tow within 3 miles.
Needless to say, I am disappointed with Progressive. They gleam in comparison with State Farm, whom I never had to worry nor question whether they were coming, or technical difficulties.
  • A Necessary Evil

We all know that insurance is, pretty much entirely, an absolute scam, and even though Progressive is technically the cheapest, you will be paying for years for the opportunity to fight with them on a claim and maybe get 5% of that money back.

This whole process can only really be made more comfortable by a functioning app, and this technically does work, although it doesn’t really do much explaining on anything. The built-in snapshot function is absolutely terrible, it constantly recorded me being on public transit as unsafe driving and after multiple attempts to turn it off, Progressive contacted me to let me know that the app was correct and that my rates would not be going down at all. I assume why they push for you to put their specific monitoring device in your car, but if that’s the case, why even have the option in the app? I would never trust the collision detection system either, because if they dispatch an ambulance or emergency services, they will automatically start a claim, which will make it much more difficult for you, the user, to have any sort of agency or power as that process happens.

I guess it’s nice that you can change the background of the welcome screen to a cute cat or dog though.
