  • NHK was our favorite app until recent update

New update takes user interface to a new low!
You used to be able to find your programs by a list in alphabetical order, now the app no longer lists programs to choose from but takes you to their website where user interface is clunky and confusing. Difficult to find programs by topic. Bring back your terrific app and ditch the website where cookies and tracking ads take away from enjoyment

  • Great app but there is an update issue.

I like this app but there is an update issue. Now when I open the app it prompts me to update to the newer version (7.1.8 I believe) but this version requires iOS 10 or later which my iPad doesnt support. So frustrating. I'll continue to use the app for now hoping they can resolve this but I'm already tiring of being prompted to do something that is not possible.

  • Not receiving notifications

Not sure why I am not receiving notifications, especially for earthquakes. When I click on “Notifications” it goes to a blank screen. Perhaps your app needs an update? There have been multiple updates for other ios apps recently but NHK’s last update was 8 months ago.
  • Casting not working

I do like watching NHK and recently the casting option does not work via the app to the TV.

I am using an iPhone and casting via the app to a chromecast.

It used to work and recently there seems
    to be a fault.

*** Come on NHK fix this issue please??***
  • Trouble with Chromecast on the latest app for both iPhone and iPad

The previous version of this app worked well with Chromecast; however, the latest update seems to have a bug connecting to the device now. I tried resetting both the app and my Chromecast and also tried to redownload the app again on my phone, but none of those efforts worked...
  • Missing a major component, but still serviceable

The app is currently no longer capable of casting across to google’s chromecast (the app will connect, but fail to cast any program across). This has already been reported multiple times.

As a stand alone app on a portable device it serves its function well, allowing viewers up-to-date broadcasts of NHK world tv, in addition to a limited back catalogue on demand. Some of its programming provides a better tour guide to future visitors than most travel guides, and the sumo highlights are more than enough for casual viewers to keep up to date (and whet the appetite of new, potential fans of the sport).
The app has some measure of customization available, allowing for an easier/quicker navigation through the back-catalogue (although it would be nice if viewers could choose to make a playlist, or something similar for programs they personally enjoy most). It would also be helpful to be notified when certain programs are available on their schedule.

All in all, a decent app that serves as an excellent resource for admirers of Japanese culture, and those who wish to travel there eventually.
Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, the casting issue will be dealt with (and the compression issues on some broadcasts quality will be resolved too).

  • Chromecast broken

Since late June the app has been unable to hook up with Chromecast. The hand off will start then the Chromecast side times out.

So fine app when using it on your device, just unable to cast to your TV.
  • News ok, but poor UI

The designers of this app need to be fired. The UI and interaction design is substandard. One particularly annoying limitation is that the app doesn’t remember the status of the previous screen, after reading an article, which means every time you have to scroll down again.
  • Notification preferences do not save

Seems to be a glitch but app notification preferences will not save. Checked in master settings and allow ALL but an error sign always appears and notification selections always revert to none. This needs to be fixed.
  • Enjoy NHK!

I thoroughly enjoy NHK’s unique perspective on news events, and consistent promotion of Japanese culture. The only thing on my wish list for this app is the ability to share individual stories via text, e-mail, or social media. Currently there is no way to share stories seen in this app.
