  • My go-to Subsonic app

I’ve been using ISub since about 2015. The only issue I’ve ever had with it is the lack of a decent CarPlay integration. You’re stuck using the Now Playing feature which doesn’t allow you to navigate outside the currently loaded playlist. Add that integration and it’ll be pretty close to perfect.
  • The most useful subsonic player

I’ve been using subsonic for over a decade. It’s basic format has essentially been unchanged the entire time and that’s a good thing. It’s so intuitive to use. I’ve tried other subsonic player apps and none have compared throughout the years. This player is so well thought out making it eminently useful.

  • doesn't seem to support https?

i can't log in to my airsonic server
  • Doesn’t work with navodrome

Doesn’t work with navodrome and feels like an app from 2012
  • Hands down the best

Have used this app for many years with both subsonic and madsonic servers, and even though its author "retired", it is still in a class of its own. Reliable, highly configurable, stable, high-quality audio, feature-packed, fantastic UI, support for genres, etc.
  • The Best Companion for Subsonic

This is one of those apps that is a staple for music lovers that host their own Subsonic server. One of the best streaming apps out there and the absolute best for streaming with Subsonic!
  • Mostly great but confusing

I use this app with my Airsonic Advanced server and I really enjoy the music player and the robust controls. What I struggle with in this app though is figuring out how to cache songs in a coherent fashion. One may download the songs in a given playlist when browsing the server, but once those songs are downloaded, the playlist itself doesn’t seem to cache, so your order and organization is lost. I really wish this would be fixed because it would then effectively fix my complaints but the caching system in particular weds work. Also it’s difficult to ecologically specify to the app that you’re offline…when you fire it up without a server connection, many verbose pop ups appear which is dangerous while driving. This should also be fixed to make the experience better and safer.

  • Pause between songs is annoying

I used iSub for a while and I like that it connects easily with my server and shows lyrics when available which is cool. But even with pre-loading of next song enabled, there is always a 1-2 second gap between songs, which I find really annoying. I reluctantly paid the $5 for the “play:Sub” app which does not have this problem and even lets you add cross fade.

iSub is a good app to try out streaming from your subsonic-compatible server. But for the long-run you think the gap might annoy you, play:Sub seems to be the best iOS app.

  • The best is back

I’m pretty sure this is the most weirdly emotional I’ve ever felt about an app update.

I gave iSub 5 stars and a review back in 2012, and from that point til the Great Disappointment of 2020 it was an almost infrastructural part of my life. I deliberately held off on updating to iOS14 for so long that I eventually forgot that it was a strategic position I was holding, just to keep this app alive. The moment when, late at night in the throes of the pandemic and perhaps in my cups, I absentmindedly tapped “Update” then instantly realized the sonic ramifications of my actions, was one of shock and trauma and genuine human grief.

My months in the wilderness were hard, Reader. So hard. As the American Experiment seemingly crumbled around me, I tried every other Subsonic app in the App Store. None could compare. I began listening to the Bandcamp app almost exclusively, the rest of my collection fading into memory.

And so today, when I found this update, It was like Dorothy opening her eyes for the first time in the technicolor of Oz. Like, “Yes. This. THIS. This is the 2021 I was promised.”

I’ve been sitting around listening to tunes all evening, marveling that iSub is not only back, it’s better. Ben did it. He BUILT BACK BETTER. The design is clearer, the way it navigates my truly massive library is lightning quick, the new bells and whistles are all intuitive and cool. The best is back. Thank you, Ben. You really, really made my day.
