  • Great, Reply to Robert

Sorry to inform you robert but, no matter how fast your 60mb/s download speed is, the upload speed that the subsonic server is running on determines how fast the music buffers.

Now to say my own review, iSub is great, I only stream music when I use my iPad, I currently have it hooked up to my turntable's aux port so I can turn on the speakers and stream some great electro through my subsonic server. I am a little disapointed that I had to pay for the app, but it is overall a well made app. Definetly hoping to see those new 3.1 features and also hoping to see all the updates through this year going into iSub. This is the only Music streamer I will use for all my personal music. Great job :)!

Note: That CPU issue has been a hassle but was fixed very quickly, thanks alot for that!

  • Works very well, quite impressed

If you're looking for a way to stream music from your home computer to your iPhone when you're on the go so you have access to your entire collection regardless of the amount of free space you have available, and without any syncing, this app works very well. Access to all directories, reasonable controls, acceptable latency, album artwork etc. A good choice.

The only negatives are the price of the app, which is a little high, and the fact that you've got to install and run the subsonic server on your computer, which you must of course leave running. And in order to use the mobile features with subsonic, you have to 'donate' something to the subsonic developers. I think that's all acceptable, but you may not.

I looked at z-subsonic first, but based on the more recent comments that the developer isn't maintaining the app and is non-responsive, I went with this one. I recommend you do to unless there is a change.

  • Isub-mit my applause

well, i am rather a dunce when it comes to the internal language of computers, servers, clients, bitrates, batraids, birdbrains, etc. I suppose this is mostly due to having been bottle fed by a macintosh computer from day one. They usually feed themselves. In any case, the premise of the Isub Ipad app sounded sweet, so i downloaded it without a second thought. And soon found it didn't work; or rather, i couldn't get the open source subsonic software to run on my computer, rendering Isub useless. This was not entirely surprising as i am running an old, near-first gen imac barely managing to chunk along on OSX 10.5.8. I attempted to find some answers from the subsonic listserve, etc, but even the admins intro. letter had me baffled and unsure if i even knew what was wrong. I actually was about to give up, ah well, 6 bucks.
To make a long and tedious story short, I instead emailed the gracious and forthright developer of Isub though my problem was not his fault, and he walked me through several emails (punctually answered), another installation of another small patch type app, etc etc etc. What he did was hold my hand while i attempted to get my ancient computer to jump through a flaming hoop. Which it does, now, and I'm streaming music just fine. I love happy endings. Ben Baron in the house.

  • Top 5 App on iTunes

This is the kind of app that completely justifies the purchase of my iPhone & iPad! I have close to 20 Gig of music on my iPod and didn't want to use up half of the disk space on my iPhone or iPad with music. I also didn't want to pay a cloud service to host my music (It took almost a week for ZumoDrive to attempt to load my songs to its cloud and then I had to delete it when I went over their 2 G limit). This app allows me to access ALL of my music whether I use my iPod, iPhone, or iPad, whenever or whereever I go! Easily setup on my desktop and iPhone/iPad, intuitive interface that allows the ability to setup creative playlists on the fly, AND the ability to share my extensive music collection with others in my household... this is a big win! So glad I found iSubMS!!!

  • Instant Gratification Just Got More Instant

With this app, I have access to my entire music library at all times, anywhere I have a 3G or Wifi connection, all the while only using enough of my phone's precious storage memory to cache a customizable number of songs so I don't have to worry about buffering problems. Not only do I have this feature of portability, but I can switch to jukebox mode and feel like a magician as I can output music to my computer speakers and home stereo with no discernible desktop application such as Itunes or Foobar running (that's not entirely true, as Subsonic runs in the background, but your friends don't know that...). This version is a monumental leap forward in interface, as I can perform a basic search by artist/album/song, browse by folder, or load playlists stored on the phone or my home computer. By saving playlists and autoplaylists locally, I potentially may never have to load music manually again. In fact, its not a stretch to say iSub could replace iPod as one of the four shortcut apps on the iPhone. Its a first-screen app all the way at the very least.

  • Entire Library on my Phone

This application is absolutely fantastic. One of my most used applications on my phone. After Simplify Media was purchased by Google I thought I would never be able to find a suitable replacement. Enter Subonic. You have to be slightly technical to install the software on a client-pc or in my case a HP Mediasmart Server, but once installed on the client setting up the connector software is easy as pie. I love the fact the application allow you to cache your favorite tunes for offline listening. Streaming is quick over 3G and if not you can throttle/downgrade your bit rate from the Host PC. Overall, I love the app and I especially love not having to load new songs on my iPhone4 via Itunes. The developer is quick to address bugs, and the after the sale support is stellar. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

  • Takes some figuring out, but worth it...

To everyone complaining about the app crashing after startup, you need to make sure to check the proper transcoders representative of the files in your music library. You need to do this in two spots to allow for playback through the server on your computer and through your idevice. The first spot is under the transcoding menu. Some of the transcoders are unchecked by default (m4a to mp3 for example), so check them and click SAVE. Now, under the players menu check the transcoders again. Finally, while still in the players menu select the isub player from the player drag-down menu and select the appropriate transcoders for that as well. Click SAVE and now u should be able to play all music files on your computer and idevice with no crashing.

  • The Best Music Streaming App Out There

When simplify Media died, I looked far and wide for a suitable replacement. Subsonic is a fantastic, almost free, service and iSub is the best way to use it on your iPhone. The app is super easy to use and works flawlessly, even with giant music collections. It is far easier to navigate and more reliable than z-subsonic.

The independently-developed, web-based, service can be a little complicated to set up for all but the most tech-savvy (manual port-forwarding is necessary for most people it seems). Thankfully, Ben, the app developer, will happily answer your questions and guide you through setup. I emailed him with the specifics of my system and my issues, and he emailed me back the same day to help me get up and running. It was well worth it! Thanks Ben!

  • Looking forward to next version - GREAT support.

Although there are a couple limitations in this version (2.1) - which should be fixed with the next upgrade, I have to give two HUGE thumbs up to Ben who personally handled my support. I wasn't expecting such a quick response on a Friday night - but the dev and I exchanged a few emails back and forth and I got a connection issue quickly resolved. Ben also answered a few other questions about Subsonic - which honestly can be a little tricky to get going.

With future releases, this is going to be a 'must have' app @ $5. I miss Simplify - and it looks like iPhone users are out of luck for that software. iSub will be a worthy replacement as it (and Subsonic) get fine tuned.

  • Works Really Well- But The Set Up Can Be Tricky

The app is great and works really well. However, people who are not tech savvy should be aware that getting the software you must use to use the app up and running may be tricky. There are support forums and some documentation on the developer's site and you can email the developer personally (which is great) but if you're a novice with this sort of thing, expect some work ahead of you. However, once it's all set up, it works really, really well. I highly recommend the app, but I do urge people to consider the fact that the learning curve here could be slightly steep. The payoff is very much worth it, though.
