  • Photo backup from iPhone doesn’t work

I got this app primarily to backup photos from my iPhone. It doesn’t do this job well. It doesn’t seem able to do the initial task of copying all pics in the background. It also seems unable to figure out when new photos exist and copy them. I’m not sure how it identifies which pics already exist in the target folder but that bit doesn’t seem to work either. All in all, a disappointment.

  • More iOS

More iOS integration, into the file app.
  • No longer supports VLC player?

I used to use DS File to play mkv files from my server, usually downloaded for offline playback before a trip. There was a time when I could open a video for playback with VLC, when did this functionality go away? VLC is a much more powerful player, e.g. much better for interlaced content, copes with HD audio etc. Would like to get this functionality back.

  • App will not download from iPhone SE

Just installed app to my new iPhone SE running IOS 14.0.1 and app will not download photos or videos to my NAS. Checking IOS update feature and this is the latest available. I continue to use this app without issue on my older iPhone 6s running IOS 13.4.1 to the same NAS with same settings. Not sure what the problem is with newer phone and IOS.

  • It has a lot of potential

I loved the thought of the app, but it needs to catch up to apple files. I use it as a photographer, but it doesn’t read any type of raw files. Also after the recent update it doesn’t load, crashes constantly.
  • GIFs don't play, MP4s don’t play

If my files aren’t useable by the app then the app isn’t useable to me. Even iOS camera roll supports GIFs.
  • Works fine for me

I’ve been using this app a few years now, and it does what I need it to. When I open then app on my home WiFi, all recent photos download to my NAS. It will only download photos when the app is open, but I will usually be working on other files as it downloads in the background. I can view all my stored data, and export files. I can save articles on my phone, and depending on the app, I can either save directly to the drive, or save it on Dropbox and then transfer the file to the drive. With Word, I love that I can copy & paste an article from the web, save it on Dropbox, then open Dropbox and export it to the NAS, all within minutes. It is a simple app, and doesn’t have all the features you would get on a pc, but it’s very effective for remote access.
My only gripe is that the photo upload will only work when I’m at home on my own WiFi network; it will not upload any photos on any other WiFi network. Why is that, and how can I configure my NAS to upload on any WiFi?

  • Missing core features from 2015

Still does not natively integrate with files for drag and drop, does not support splitview nor slide over. These are core features for any file management app that Apple introduced over 4 years ago.

Because of the lack of support for the basics, I’ve actually begun using OneDrive and iCloud Drive for storage because their apps always take advantage of the latest features within a reasonable timeframe.

Final update 2020: This app (and most of their apps) seems to be neglected. As such, I sold my NAS and migrated to iCloud Drive. The whole “private cloud” idea is great, love the hardware and OS, but it’s just not usable in 2020 with abandoned mobile apps.

  • Tech support is a complete joke

Don’t bother. You can browse directories and files but you CAN NOT OPEN FILES for viewing. Tech support will first tell you it’s a problem with iOS and then they’ll try to tell you it’s a problem with the files and finally they’ll tell you the only way to view a file is to download it and then open it. Complete crock of bs.

If you recently bought your NAS - return it while you have time. It does not get better. Synology's tech support department is a complete joke.

    Developer Response

Dear user, may I know which format of file cannot be opened?
  • Kind of sort of OK, but not really.

Having a Synology is great. Very nice piece of hardware. Apps like this don’t live up to that though. It is not a good user friendly implementation now that iOS has a more robust Files app. It needs to be developed to take advantage of Files “browsing” for a more seamless integration. Until that happens, this app use useless for how I need to manage my professional workflow.
