  • Help to Help Yourself

I began with my Ginger coach at a low & desperate time in my life. I did not have money or the energy to try traditional therapy. I was sent info on Ginger by my health plan and thought, “Why not try this”. What a GIFT. Over the weeks I was able to unpack the layers of issues that I felt were smothering me. We would chat together & I could begin to plan some goals for the next week. The help from Ana was always gentle & guiding, so I could see for myself that I could create change from within. I am relearning to have confidence in myself, & am a better person today.

  • Don’t bother

If I could give this app zero stars I would . It is completely dysfunctional. First the coach I was assigned did not show up to the first appointment due to the app scheduling a session during a time when she was not available. Then I finally got set up with a video therapy appointment, and the therapist was not only late to the session, but abandoned the appointment without letting me know, because their audio wasn’t working. The support is terrible and takes forever to respond. I was interested in this app because it promised convenience, but the experience has been far from convenient. I would be better off pursuing traditional routes of getting therapy. I must say it’s a really unconscionable to give people this kind of runaround when they are trying to get help.

  • Great Resource

My health insurance offers coaching through Ginger at no cost to me as a benefit. I have been looking for something to help me manage my ADHD and improve my mental and physical health. I’ve been using Ginger for a few weeks now, and it’s more helpful than some of the other apps I have tried. Jesus, my coach, is a good listener and helps me to stay on track with my goals. I also had a situation where something was upsetting me and I couldn’t sleep. I hopped on the app and was matched with an awesome coach, TJ, who chatted with me and helped me think through my situation, gave me reassurance and perspective.

  • Thinking it’s a scam

My insurance company recommended this in September, said it would be free but they’d take a credit card in case I ever missed an appointment without telling them. I very carefully never incurred a charge. The therapist messed up multiple appointment schedules, didn’t show to some but I always told them ASAP when this happened so there’d be a paper trail and it wouldn’t fall on me.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago, and they’re notifying me of charges for things that supposedly happened in NOVEMBER and JANUARY. I’ve asked repeatedly for explanations and offered screenshots to prove I did nothing to merit that, but they WILL NOT EXPLAIN and of course you can’t speak with a human by phone or even chat.

They have my card number and can charge me whatever they want—and they are. I can’t recommend enough to not trust them with your card number. The few actual therapy sessions I had were NOT worth the added stress and anxiety of this insane situation. I will report them to Visa, to Apple, the state therapy boards and the freakin FTC.

  • Straight Scam

I never write reviews and not doing this to talk bad on the company for fun. I wanted this to work so badly. Unfortunately I was billed $100 for this month through my insurance. But I discovered it’s only coaching no therapists available. So I decided to cancel and get my money back because it’s not what I expected. I never used the services, and they refused to refund me. Then, I figured I’d use the services for this month since I was already billed for it and there’s no refunds. I ask my coach if we can schedule a meeting and she said no because I cancelled the services. So I paid for nothing and can’t use what I paid for. That’s the definition of a scam whether they intended for it to be that way or not. If they at least let me use the month I paid for since I just purchased I would not be upset.

  • Detrimental to my mental health

My experience with Ginger started off great. I found them through my insurance BSCA. I started with a life coach and she recommended therapy and a psychiatrist. Ginger emailed me through the app and asked me if I wanted to proceed, that it was in network and covered by my insurance. Great! Until I was getting charged full price for all my sessions. I contacted my insurance company and it took forever to figure out that BSCA only covers the life coach, not any of the therapy. Therapy is covered by BSCA third party mental health branch, Magellan and Ginger is not in their network. I had bonded with my therapist and was making progress but had to end all my sessions as I couldn’t afford to pay out of pocket. After appealing to my insurance they covered the sessions I had but Ginger has yet to refund me any of the charges they processed. On top of that, one of my therapist was covered by insurance through her private practice but Ginger won’t let her see me as a patient, some sort of policy. In all my therapist were wonderful but this whole ordeal has left me in a worse mental state then when I started.

  • Company probably needs more staff/more reliable team

I’m thoroughly unimpressed with this app/service. The coach I was assigned was slightly late for our first scheduled meeting a few weeks ago, nearly 10 minutes late for our 30 minute meeting the next week and then just didn’t even show up/check in for our next meeting. Scheduling with a therapists was also a nightmare. You have to text with member support to schedule your initial therapy intake. They began with messaging me to get me on the schedule only to take hours to reply to my response and this has been fairly consistently happening throughout trying to schedule this. It took two days to get a date scheduled with a therapist, with them offering me dates and times for me to respond that that date works only for them to respond hours later that it’s no longer available. This would have been a quick process on the phone or on a live chat where the representative is giving you their immediate attention for the time it takes to select the date. I honestly think companies would be better off putting the money they pay for this service in their employee’s HSA to use towards a better suited mental health support program/service.

  • Terrible - coaches are unreliable

I tried this because it was covered by my insurance. Had to wait a full week of the 90-days covered to get my first chat session. That seemed to go well and my coach gave me homework which I diligently did and kept notes on what worked and what didn’t. Scheduled time off work for my second scheduled session a week later. When I logged in my coach was offline and there was no notification or notice about why. Customer service was entirely unhelpful and didn’t seem to understand why having a coach completely flaked on a scheduled session was a problem. They eventually transferred me to a different coach who was also unhelpful and didn’t understand why I was reluctant to trust the app again when they failed so completely in very basic professionalism and decency. Totally waste of time and a waste of time off work for a scheduled appointment. I’m now worse off than when I started using this app for coaching.

  • So far, zero stars

Ginger is so far completely lacking at every turn. I needed help when I contacted them. Was paired with a "coach" that was obviously tying from a script. It was cold and not helpful. Once you have your meaningless exchange with what could easily be a bot, you fill out a questionnaire and of course provide credit card. Then you get a message saying - sorry we are so very busy and there is no telling when we might find a therapist for you. It's been over a week and I'm still waiting. But now they have private information about me and cc number, and who knows what they'll do with that.
Ginger has been completely lacking in what it markets itself as. And it's awful to treat people that way when they're vulnerable, if I could give zero stars I would.

  • Wish there was a way to track which modules I already did

Recently started using the app through a service my university provides. I currently feel it’s a reasonable app, will see how things go as I use it more. Pretty straightforward to use and I like that it records how many modules you’ve done / which sessions (coaching, therapy, psychiatry) you’ve done. I wish you could see which modules you already went through maybe like a checked box. Also would be nice to have a breakdown of categories not just putting them all under “self care”. Aka instead of like 10 self care maybe have 5 emotions and 5 behaviors? Maybe keep the 10 self care but allow us to have a further breakdown?
