  • Love the App but..

First of all I’ve been using this for 9 months straight, great app, it totally got me to work out from home which is something I use to laugh about doing. It adapts the workout over time and you really feel yourself progressing.

But you have the stop with the status updates!! This is such a painful feature, no I don’t want to update my 2 friends on the app about how it felt to do 10 push-ups. And then again 3 minutes later, do you want to comment on the main part of your workout? If you need to keep this feature for the sake of trying to build community just have a prompt at the end of the workout, not 3 x in the middle.

In the spirit of efficiency, I don’t want to play around with my phone pressing buttons in the middle of the workouts, make it smooth, less clicks and less friction. Quick feedback after each step and then move on to the next bit, not 6 different steps. Soon I’m just going to start to do the workouts without the app because I loose so much time fiddling with the phone.

  • One of the most essential apps I have!

I have been using this app for almost 5 years. I have been telling people who are lazy, afraid or don’t have time to go the gym to give it a try. It is worth it.
It might be a bit expensive and that’s a turn off for most of the people but I would recommend doing a 6 months subscription first. Finish a journey or two and you will definitely see results. If you can’t stick to it, you will be wasting money.
I added weights now since I got bored of the body weight workouts but every time they add new workouts, it is always exciting!

  • Healthy Mind Healthy Body

I’ve always had a goal to better myself mentally, physically, and spiritually. But I felt like I was hit by a Mack truck going into 2020. Everything I built up crumbled down and I fell into a state of depression. When I thought it couldn’t get any worse, the pandemic happened. I did everything I could to get back on my feet, not to fix who I was, but to start new with my goals as the foundation.

11-months into this year, and this is the healthiest I’ve ever been. The biggest lesson for me is that a healthy mind starts with a healthy body. Freeletics is the best fitness app I’ve ever tried and have recommended this to everyone that compliments me in my progress.

  • I’ve used many fitness apps

And this is the best one, by far. I’ve tried Adidas Training & running, Nike Run Club, Fitbod & Shred. From all these, i find Freeletics the most complete. The one feature i was really missing was the ability to use with my watch and leave the phone behind, and just when i thought it wasn’t possible, boom, I found the setting for that (still in Experimental mode). Anyway, After trying the most popular fitness apps, I think I’ve found what i was looking for (u2 ref). I love the interface, the user interaction (you can decide what you want to hear, so no more annoying countdowns from 20)and the sample videos are really well produced... there’s quality and much thought all around, for what I can see, in this app. Love it.

  • SAVE YOUR MONEY Lacking in a lot of ways

The pros: has a large library of exercise movements.

The cons: too numerous to list them all.

The worst is the algorithm that doesn't adjust when weight is too heavy. It keeps the weight the same. Anyvlifter familiar with 5x5(which some of the workouts follow) understand what to do if you fail multiple times. This app doesn't do it.

inability to edit workouts properly. I tried to tell the app I didn't have the equipment and it kept insisting I do the exercise. I edited the exercise and it reverts back to the original.

Inability to do a completely different workout when you inform the app you can't move a body part. I dislocated my shoulder and could only work legs. The app won't account for that.

The app does increments that my gym can't accommodate.

The workouts insist you do their cardio but I do my own cardio outside of the app by way of sports and running. The app doesn't allow you to input this or skip over those workout. It keeps pushing the workout to the next day.

You can't turn the screen off or it will pause or even skip your rest period. When you open your phone it counts down from 5 even if you had 1 1/2 a minute left.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and it still is full of bugs.

I can keep going but it's too much to type on a phone. The watch app is even worse than this if you can believe it.

  • Pros and Cons

I used to love this app but over the past few months the Coach doesn't seem to work as well in terms of responding to soreness feedback and your overall training (ie if you’ve taken significant time off it no longer adapts). I’ve been a paid subscriber for years and it’s just not what it used to be anymore. I reached out to support earlier this year and they brushed me off. I reached out again recently after the app caused an old knee injury to flare up again with screen recordings of my issues and everything and it’s been over three weeks without a response. Disappointed after loving this app for years and will probably look into other options.

Update: They responded to this review within days but I still haven’t heard back on my inquiry.

Another update: I followed up on both inquiries that were unanswered and never received a response on either but they continue to respond to this review asking me to email them. I have, repeatedly.

  • There are better apps - also terrible business practices

I downloaded Freeletics and two other home, bodyweight based apps and Centr was by far my favourite. I found the workouts much better, easier to follow and the progression tool was far more effective.

The extra content around nutrition, lifestyle etc was excellent on Centr whereas with Freeletics it feels like it’s just there to tick boxes and wasn’t for me.

I would still have given Freeletics a 3/5 (Centr is a 5/5) except they automatically renewed by 6 month subscription after I was sure I cancelled the auto renew as soon as I paid for the first 6 months. I was happy to pay for the first 6 months even though I didn’t use it after 2 months but they are refusing to refund me despite me contacting them 2 minutes after I saw the renewal go through. I am also sure I cancelled the auto renewal immediately after sign up but I can’t prove this.

Clearly a big part of their business model to get auto renewals and of course there was no warning it was coming so they can maximise the free money they get from people who aren’t using their app. Then refusing to refund when I’m very clearly not going to use it so now I’m paying 12 months when I only used it for 2.

Pretty immoral and discussing business practices.

    Massive thumbs down for Freeletics

  • Fun, like the coach but needs more customisation

The journeys are really nice although it’s difficult to distinguish what some of them are. Some of the names are gimmicky. What is “Balanced fat burn?” given that there is no sure fire way to get your body to burn fat on demand? What is “Fit and toned”? You can’t get “toned”, it’s a misnomer.

Now the coach has improved a lot over the years and at the moment it seems to adapt really well. I like the structured programs and what I have seen so far is fairly balanced.

The bodyweight part of the app is really good, and even though some people have commented that the bodyweight exercises are just push ups and crunches remixed, they are quite wrong. There is a logical order to those exercises, programming has nothing to do with inventing moves, it’s about how you put them together.

I like that you have options to modify workouts based on things like being too sore, not having a lot of time, needing to be quiet etc.

However I really wish they’d let you skip certain exercises. I just can’t do certain exercises because of past injury. Skipping muscle groups is not enough: I don’t need to skip muscle groups, I just have to avoid specific movements. That would really go a long way towards avoiding/training around injuries.

  • Good fitness app

I’ve used this app for almost a year to complete at-home workouts, with and without minor equipment. You can choose different fitness ‘journeys’ to go on, depending on your goals. I did 12 weeks of a hybrid muscle/cardio journey twice, and 12 weeks of strength building once. In the hybrid workouts, there are a great number of high intensity workouts that incorporate plyometrics into shorter workouts; These workouts I loved. I looked forward to working out, even if the workouts do lean heavily on burpees, which never became fun.

For the strength-focused journey, the workout guides you through weight lifting repetitions. In between sets, the app has you wait up to 3 minutes to start your next set. I found this entirely too long and would often find myself scrolling through the workout, trying to finish up in 30-40 minutes what the app would have you take 60 minutes to do with the extended wait time between sets.

The other critique I have is on the flow. For each workout, there’s a warmup and cool down. It is best to do all the laying movements, then move into sitting exercises, then standing, etc. Instead, this app will have you sitting to do glute bridges one minute, standing to do arm windmills the next, then back on your back for leg raises. A more thoughtful flow would have been appreciated.

  • Pros and cons

I use Freeletics as well as Freeletics Gym. I have had paid subscription for personalized coaching for more than a year. Here are pros and cons.

    What I like:
    - Precise movement instruction
    - 12-week personalized program called “journeys”
    - Each week’s training program adjusted for your feedback (for example, if you rate certain workout too easy, they will bump it up. If you rate something was too much, they will find you an easier version of it.)
    - Programs reflect what you have at home. Whether you have blank walls, bars, etc. Plenty of options even if you have no equipment at all.
    - Each day’s workout begins with a warmup and ends with a cool down routine. Minimize injuries.
    - Points system
    - Overall, a cool looking app!

    What I dislike:
    - Way too much jumping!! It makes me do jumping jacks every day. Terrible for women over 40, I’d say. Too much burpee, also.
    - Rep counts are confusing. Each side counts as one repetition? Or one each side counts as one repetition? It says the former but the latter would make more sense, especially when the reps are in odd numbers.
    - I am setting tighten and tone as my goal but it has more cardio effects than toning and strengthening.
    - No option to add dumbbells to body weight workouts.
