A comic reader without a vertical scroll!!!
This app is great in everything… but I don’t understand how a reader (especially a comic one) don’t have vertical scrolling… I’m reading Solo Leveling (a webtoon) on it and each page (cbz file) is long and narrow… it’s not cut correctly between pages, so I’ll have a page ends showing part of the comic and the other part is at the beginning of the next page… vertical scrolling will solve this problem, but Chunky (unlike most of reading apps) doesn’t have that… It’s a big disappointment for me!!!
Further more, the app doesn’t support image pages (png or jpg), which is also a disappointment!!!Show lessFJaradat
One of the best comic readers!
Tried a few comic readers & Chunky is one of the best available. Simple importing & auto sorting function is good but not perfect. Find that Chunky sorts some similar named titles together even when they are named properly ie. Sorted Justice League & Justice League Dark together instead of sorting them into 2 lists/folders. Also lost a bit of a mark since it doesn't sort comics when in a folder & you drop that in - whether by iTunes or by cloud etc.
Comics look good (especially on an older iPad Air with Retina) and turning pages is easy with the option to head to next issue in series when you reach end of issue.
The viewing of you library of comics is a bit different as the app shows series in a sorted manner but shows the individual issues in a row (left to right) so you can swipe to see more issues in that series. Interesting way to show series but may not be for everyone. Works for me as I do not usually load more than 20-40 issues for a series at a time but for some people that load 70 or 100 issues in a series, it may become tiresome scrolling through issues already read to get to the later ones you need to still read (mind you you could delete a few of them once read too).
That being said still not sure I would change viewing method as nice seeing this new layout on a comic viewer and it does pretty much everything else right.
Bought Pro version & it is worth the cost for extra cloud & online syncing benefits. Tried these syncing methods & they work ok as some of the online storage was hit & miss as some would have the actual comic appear - not sure if a app or the online storage service's problem plus no folder sync). The web browser sync is my fav as it works by simply typing in address in browser & then dragging comics to it & they show immediately - very nice!
Chunky is a winner and may be one of the best (if not the best) DRM free comic readers to view cbr & cbz comics. Certainly worth trying & not badly priced to add Pro Version (under $4) too!
Make a couple corrections that I mention above & the app would be worth a 5 star rating!
One final suggestion would be for the makers of Chunky to port their comic app to Mac too - would be nice to have the same app on Mac & iPad that sync with other and track what you’ve read, and sorts series etc - Plus the current batch of comic readers on Mac are very weak right now.Show lessTrick Fan
Great! Possible Additional Features?
Managed to get my manga and webtoons (.zip) onto my iPad via USB + iTunes/iMazing. Truly appreciate the developers for making a great and simple customization app possible for reading manga. It would be great if future updates can include support for use with keyboards (i.e., using arrow keys or trackpad to navigate) as well as infinite scrolling from top to bottom for webtoons. Best comic book reader
I rarely take the time to write app reviews but I have used this comic book reader for years now and my experience with it has been so pleasant that I felt like I needed to share my thoughts.
It really is the best comic book reader on the App Store. It has TONS of options to access your comics and the way that it works with cloud services is unparalleled. The interface is clean and simple yet it is very full featured and you can customize your experience in a lot of meaningful ways.

Reading is great; Dropbox is not
Importing from Dropbox is hit or miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it hangs. Too bad, because otherwise it’s an amazing reader. I *did* try to email the dev, but didn’t get a response.alanthefriesen
Chunky is Good, but Needs One Fix to be Great
Chunky is a good app overall, but it has one extremely annoying feature. Every time I open it, it stalls for a minute or two to scan for any new files. During this time, I can’t do anything at all with it. It appears frozen but for a little spinning icon. It is even more grating to me since I don’t add new files all that often.
Could the developers put a switch in the settings to allow or disallow “scan for new files upon opening”’ or just have a button in the app to initiate a scan when tapped? No one likes any app that stalls upon opening.
This app also has not been updated in over eight months, which makes me worry that further development on it has been abandoned.Show lessJasper Jasper
Great app only one flaw
This is a great app and probably the best comic reader out there. I really like the way the issue covers are displayed in the menu. One very annoying flaw though, is when you pinch the screen to zoom in or out on your iPad for some reason sometimes it changes the brightness. Can this be disabled? It really is that good
I suppose our society breeds cynicism, but when one reads a never ending series of glowing reviews, suspicion creeps in. Chunky absolutely lives up to the praise. It is just a lovely piece of work. It is so good that I bought the PRO upgrade just to support the creator, even though I thought I had no use for it (I was wrong, the ability to make a comic out of a bunch of separate files is amazing.).Show lessTerryF2
