  • The most consistent training system out there

To get the best out of Trainer Road, you’ll need a smart trainer and a some good music, but it will deliver consistent improvements in performance if you follow their training plans. Listen to the podcast to get a great general knowledge in endurance fitness and the product.
  • Bluetooth issue

Have been experiencing issues where devices are showing as connected via Bluetooth but not via TrainerRoad. Hoping on top of it now.
  • Regular user

Been using TR for more than 5 years, few times a week.
I’m giving it 5 stars as it does exactly what’s it promises.

Few things I’m not happy with:

    1. Numbers on the screen can be too small. You might need glasses to see them

    2. They had excellent zoom feature in the past that you can zoom on a part of your workout. They discontinued that. It was so useful for focusing on parts of the workout, especially when you do 2h session. I’m to this day annoyed they removed that feature.

    3. Devices are not always picked up. I have to regularly open Wahoo app, connect to kickr and then TR senses the Kickr.

    4. It occasionally , maybe once a week havea hiccup where powers shoots up to twice your FTP or higher and you have to stall. It only lasts 2-3 seconds but if you’re in the middle of high intensity interval, you can’t really restart easily. Although it’s rare, it’s disruptive when it happens.

    What I like is

    1. Search through workouts has improved immensely. It used to be quite poor.

    2. It allows me to create my own sessions when I needed them.

    3. Plans. I did so many plans. Brillaient.

Despite other apps on the market that do virtual bunch riding, etc, this is the best app for structural training.

  • Seriously ....

    There’s nothing to beat it.

If you’re serious that is. Knowing what you’re doing, need to do, helps.

But then there’s Zwift. Stupid, cartoony, silly Zwift. Pros are on it because of sponsorship. That’s the less mercenary euphemistic version of money.

They are paid to be there.

No one in their right mind would choose Zwift if they new what they were doing or needed to do.

If you have Gates’ like nerd qualities ok. You can fathom Training Peaks. But in the real world it’s TR.

If you have the concentration span of under 24 and need the gimmicks akin to an advert then cycling full stop is not for you.

The focus of a TT is pure. There’s no gimmick that replaces the need to concentrate.

TR is about focus. Suffering. Relentless hard work. That is what it takes on the road, real world.

But playing at cyclist. The Lycra. Shiny bike for shiny people. Get the cartoon.

TR you can’t find many on it. I race. Others don’t. They have Zwift.

Serious cyclists. Solo. No gimmicks. A graph. Blue blocks. A target.

Oh, and lots of pain too.

How did I first hear of it? A World Champion recommended it to me. His son, a classics winner and top pro, endorsed it. Oh, and he is on Zwift ..... because he’s paid to be.

    Get serious.

    Get TR.

  • Reliable

TrainerRoad rewrote their app using a software framework called React Native. The new version works much like the old one, there are additional features such as: displaying workout end time; it’s easier to tweak trainer settings during a workout; full calendar is available in-app. The most important feature for me was the reliability, I couldn’t imagine anything more frustrating than having the app crash mid-workout or, worse, lose data. Fortunately the app is rock solid 👍🏻

It’s not all positive. There is now a certain amount of lag in the UI. It might be imperceptible to some, but I’ve seen it slow down to the extent that user inputs would start buffering.

The other aspect that annoys me in particular is the treatment of date/time formats and the custom data/time picker. TrainerRoad has chosen to implement its own date/time picker and it forces 12hr clock on me. If TR had used iOS’s native date/time picker it wouldn’t have been a problem. A date/time picker is a solved problem, I have no idea why TrainerRoad chose to implement their own.

It’s a pretty good app overall, it works exactly as you would expect it to (expect when it comes to date/times).

  • Not happy with March 2021 update

I have been using Trainer Road for a couple of years now and have been very happy with the app. Unfortunately, that all changed with the recent update/redesign of the app this March 2021. I never had issues connecting my smart trainer, power meter, heart monitor, and speed/cadence device. I also did not have a problem calibrating my smart trainer. The past three rides since the update have been highly frustrating. I have spent between 10 to 20 minutes trying to connect my devices which was no problem before the update. Once my devices are attached my smart trainer will not calibrate. After multiple attempts, opening and closing the app, all of a sudden everything is connected and I can calibrate. All of my devices connect with the manufacturer’s app and the Wahoo Utility app. I do not have any of devices connected to any other app when using Trainer Road. If the app is not fixed ASAP, I will cancel my subscription.

  • Can’t Share This Enough

TrainerRoad has changed my life. I’ve been riding regularly for 5+ years, entered races for fun, raced competitively as well as worked in a bike shop for most of those years. I battled with the elitist attitude in the cycling world regularly and mainly just wanted to get myself and others out and ride. I had never cared or given much thought to statistics besides miles, speed, and cadence. Last year I was signed on to a local racing team and knew I needed more “training” but the other riding/training app didn’t bring any motivation to the table. We have cold winters in South Dakota and indoor rides are a must. A friend and fellow cyclist recommended TrainerRoad and immediately I was hooked. The team has put so
much work into tailoring each block, educational and motivational text during rides, not to mention and the podcast and forums. Using TR makes me excited about the next ride as soon as I finish one. I tell everyone I know that rides about it because it is a beautiful balance between beginner and elite cycling and I cannot thank y’all enough.

  • This simply works 🥳

I wanted to get faster- simple as that. I’ve done club cycling in groups which is fine, I’ve done a lot of the Zwift training sessions and programs but this is the crème of them all.
The sessions train everything from pedal stroke efficiency (SO important), cadence and power. They’re all hard but doable and are a combination of everything without confusing or overloading your mind/concentration.
The biggest plus for me though is the psychology of the commentary- it breaks things down into chunks that don’t allow your mind to argue you into a break as there’s so much ahead.
Get your FTP right at the beginning focus on the “belly breathing” and go for it. You WILL improve. You cannot avoid it.

  • TrainerRoad is hands down the best coach

If you follow their process you will be stronger and faster. Forget all the other apps, just follow their podcast and do your assigned TrainerRoad workouts, and you will be a faster cyclist. Use the plan builder to layout your planes.

You will also amaze your friends with all the cycling knowledge and drills you will absorb from the app.

I’ve paid $1000s for pro coaches and gotten some results, but TrainerRoad will give you measurable results you can deposit in the bank. You will be the person putting a hurting on your friends in the Saturday rides. Be warned, you will be accused of doping with your new found fitness gained from TrainerRoad.

  • Too expensive now!

For a long time this was my software of choice during the winter months. It is far too expensive now though to even think about using as it has doubled in price since I was last using it. Although I have heard that there are more features the thing I liked about it was that it was a simple training plan which I could just use without the faff of other distractions like Zwift etc.

I can’t help but feel there should be a basic subscription for just the base training plans and workouts as before.

Sad to say but Zwift is my only option for the price. I wish I could turn off all of the knobs chatter though and people who think they are on their limit while typing.
