  • Reading and speaking

I’m a visual learner, so learning Thai was always going to be a challenge given the script is different. This app really helps by combining the written ( transliterated, romanized) words with the native speaker and visual cues. I also like that it’s self paced, ie click to continue, not just fixed silence space in an audio tape, and easy to replay when needed. Better than a book, better than audio only, has the best of both.

  • Better than Duolingo but needs to explain the basics

I downloaded the app as ‘free’ Duolingo suddenly started giving 5 hearts (lives / mistakes) per day / lesson and pushing you to take up the ‘unlimited’ option... which of course cost a monthly fee. While Duolingo constantly advertises itself as being free, it certainly isn’t enough to allow you to effectively learn a language unless you are prepared to pay.
So in order to be able to have enough option to learn enough I knew I had to bite the bullet and pay. Out of principle Duolingo was out. After some research and because I wanted to learn Romanian (not one of the popular languages available on Babble etc) my due diligence led me to Mondly, which scored highly on review sites.
I’m about a week into it and I like the format. The vocalisation is certainly significantly superior to Duolingo. There is a good breath of subjects but I would prefer some options to master the basics I.e. “I do, she does, they do” etc. And some more options to explain things such as definite articles. Rather than effectively leave you to learn through trial and error. To my mind it is a little bit ‘run before you can walk’ and would also have preferred an option to have my level assessed rather than have to pick the beginner/intermediate/advanced for myself.
Explanations over gender, construction and form would make this a 5 star app.

  • In my opinion, the best choice

I looked at most of the language-learning apps available and I’ve settled on Mondly. It just seems like the one that will really embed the language in my head in bite-sized chunks. I’m starting out with Hindi, having returned fairly recently from a trip to India and feeling unworthy only being able to say ‘Hello’ and ‘Thank you.’

One thing I would like to see as an addition, especially for languages like Hindi, Greek and Arabic is the ability to learn how to write the characters of the alphabet. The Devanagari script is beautiful and essential if you want to find your way around an Indian railway station. Might it be possible to add this, especially for those, like me, who have forked out for a year’s subscription?

  • Really great app

Really great app for learning to speak Hindi. Let’s you learn a decent amount (more than 5 minutes) per day.
  • Great for Rusty Speakers

I used to be able to speak, read and write mandarin as a second language, but after I finished school my education stopped.
This app has been a great opportunity for me to relearn these skills, including speaking.
The only feedback I have is that I think the app could appear a little clearer with the recommended order that you do the lessons in, and that there isn’t a writing function - although I imagine that would be very hard to integrate.
Otherwise I love the reminders and use this every night, and all my vocabulary is gradually coming back to me!

  • Awesome

I love this app. I’ve only been doing it for a few days but it’s addictive and I look forward to finding little bits of free time to learn Finnish on Mondly. It’s so well designed and has surpassed my expectations. I love the voice recognition and the conversation exercises. I’m doing it just for fun and to keep my mind active and it’s ticking both of those boxes. The Finnish is going in to my mind and I’m understanding so much so quickly. I’ve looked into a lot of apps and this one is by far the best. I have found no negatives at all. Well done to the designers!

  • Love love love

I have been searching for an arabic app for years and finally I’ve found one that costs $14 and actually challenges me. I am an intermediate arabic student and being able to select the level before starting was very useful to me. It has all the elements you’d want from a teaching app; listening, speaking, matching, quizzes, daily lessons, spelling, plus a conversation bot that you can talk to. This app is the best one I’ve tried and I’ll be learning some other languages on it too soon enough.

    Thank you so much!

  • Very easy to use

Faster way to learn because I can retake lessons and I am memorizing the words so quickly as well
  • Tôi thích Mondly

Mondly is a great way to start learning a new language. It’s reasonably priced and the app is glitch free, interesting and keeps you motivated through some clever gamification. As far as language apps go, it’s hard to imagine anything better.

Nothing beats one-on-one sessions with a tutor.

I’ve started learning Vietnamese, and whilst the app got me interested and taught me some basics, I didn’t really start to progress until I started with a tutor. Firstly, you get immediate feedback and support and details about the nuances of the language. Secondly, I find intensives with a tutor help me remember much better. No matter how much I studied with Mondly, much of what I learnt didn’t really stick.

Of course the cost difference is huge, so investing in Mondly is a great and cost effective way to get started with your language journey.

  • Great App, keeps you motivated

Daily lesson, pushes you to do a short lesson each day. Good mix between flash cards. Can change between Thai writing and phonetic spelling, so you can recognize Thai words and pronounce right. It has rewards, which make you feel you’ve achieved something. Option to unlock more lessons by subscribing, but free version still has Dailey lessons.
