Scan

Took ten restarts before I got through the setup.

Facial recognition blows, 2 stars because I’m not a 1 star guy

Driver’s license scan not working

I was excited to set up this mID app for a contactless verification method I can use at the new Squirrels arena and other locations, but the setup process is getting stuck on the first step. I gave the app camera permission, but it fails to scan the barcode on my license no matter what surface I place it on or distance I hold it away.

Needs improvements

ID scan stated success. Face photo stated success then bam Error Credential issues

Great feature!

Very easy to set up and convenient!

Needs Native Integration

The app is passible but it needs modernization. Native integration, the ability to open settings when printing you to connect Bluetooth, etc.—the mature qol features of a mobile app. It’s a start.

AI Assessment for the App Terms & Conditions

Only valid physical credential holders can enroll. Mobile ID doesn’t replace the physical card — some contexts (e.g., law enforcement) may still require it.

Not all places accepting a physical ID will accept the Mobile ID.

DMV verifies your identity by cross-checking wallet-submitted info against your DMV record before issuing the Mobile ID.

DMV shares your personal data with the Digital Wallet provider (e.g., Apple/Google) to enable this. The provider then stores that data under its own separate terms/privacy policy, not DMV’s.

DMV can suspend, cancel, or revoke your Mobile ID anytime, without notice, for prohibited use or legal violations.

DMV disclaims essentially all liability — for data interception, service interruptions, wallet provider errors, security breaches, malware transmission, etc.

You must indemnify DMV (cover their legal costs/damages) for a broad list of scenarios, including third-party claims tied to your use, misuse by someone you gave access to, or even “perceived misrepresentation.”

Governed by Virginia law; disputes go to Virginia Circuit Court; jury trial is waived.

DMV can change these terms anytime without notice — continued use = acceptance.

Areas of concern

1. One-sided liability. DMV disclaims almost all liability (breaches, interruptions, errors, malware) while requiring you to indemnify them broadly, including for third-party claims and “perceived misrepresentation” — a vague standard.
2. No-notice changes. DMV can amend terms anytime without notice; you’re bound by continued use, meaning you’d need to proactively re-check the terms yourself.
3. Data-sharing scope is broad. DMV shares your personal data with the wallet provider, and the provider’s storage/security practices are outside DMV’s control and governed by separate (provider) terms you’d need to review independently.
4. Revocation without notice. DMV can suspend/cancel/revoke your Mobile ID without notice, though this doesn’t necessarily affect your physical credential.
5. Jury trial waiver + fixed venue. You give up jury trial rights and agree disputes go only to Virginia Circuit Court.
6. Acceptance is not universal. The Mobile ID may not be accepted everywhere the physical ID is — practical reliability gap not fully spelled out.
7. “DMV is not liable to you or anyone else for any loss or injury” is an extremely broad blanket disclaimer, likely bounded by Virginia law in practice but stated with no carve-outs.

Constant error message

Constant error message about app needing to update mobile ID.

Add Apple wallet integration!

Nice app- needs apple wallet integration!

Great idea

I think this is a great idea. It’s gonna be very handy and convenient. Great job DMV.

Easy to setup

I’m happy that mobile ID for Virginia is setup. It took a few minutes to setup.

Good but still maturing

Overall a great idea and will be convenient. Will be much better as it becomes accepted at more places. One frustration is it seems to forget that I have registered. Not sure if that occurs when the app updates, but value is questionable when one goes to use it and gets prompted to register again. Happened twice to me so far!

Apple Wallet?

Useless without Wallet support. I am not unlocking my phone to hand to anyone to scan.

See how the picture turns out and the Face ID.

Second attempt and still not accepted

Second time I’ve tried using this app and the second time I’ve been told they don’t accept it as ID. First was a pharmacy, second was for wine. Love the idea, but if no one accepts it as ID….

Very difficult to use!

It took me over 20 minutes, including deleting and reloading the app which had frozen up. The face recognition part was very difficult.

Long Over Due

Been waiting for this for years. Good to see DMV keeping up with the times.

Helpful but painful

The UX needs improvement. Scanning the back of your id is easy but getting your picture right is hard. It took me seven times to get it right. Each time it doesn’t like your picture you have to go all the way back to the beginning. The instructions of what to fix cut off on the screen so you don’t really know how to fix it. Glad I finally got it right but the experience is difficult.
