No tracking. THE SCIENCE BEHIND RED LIGHT Retinal cells need energy to function. Their mitochondria produce ATP - the fuel that powers cellular activity - and mitochondrial function can decline with age. Research into red light therapy, including a 2021 UCL study published in Scientific Reports, has explored how controlled exposure to deep red light at 670 nm may support retinal energy processes and colour contrast sensitivity. A screen is not the same as the light source used in that research. Screens emit a broader spectrum, typically peaking around 620–640 nm, and cannot reproduce a precise 670 nm exposure. Display settings do not make them equivalent to research equipment. The study’s findings do not establish that this app improves vision or increases ATP. Use the app for a mindful pause and to learn about red light research - not as an eye treatment. It is for wellness and education, is not a medical device, and does not replace advice from an eye-care professional. Set aside three minutes. Pause, unwind, and make room to refocus. Verdict
Box Breathing and Red Light For Your Eyes both sit at 4.8 stars, but that hides the real split: 100% of Red Light For Your Eyes's written reviews are positive against 79% of Box Breathing's. Red Light For Your Eyes also leads on device support (4 vs 2). Box Breathing's advantage is monetization model (free with in-app purchases vs paid) and ratings volume (320 vs 42). On price, rating, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Box Breathing sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month and Red Light For Your Eyes sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Box Breathing holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Box Breathing has 320 ratings behind it against 42, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 79% of Box Breathing's written reviews are positive against 100% of Red Light For Your Eyes's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
