  • just amazing.

this app blows my mind in the fact that it is completely free, and completely void of ads. you never see things of this quality without one or both of those.

i haven’t delved into the kanji aspect of it yet as i’m just beginning learning japanese, however the ability to make flash card sets out of folders of bookmarked words is amazing. it’s so handy in any setting but especially when i’m out and about and have some time to kill.

i also love that the dictionary can detect the romaji version of the words.

  • Excellent App!

This app is excellent! I have been using this app for years now! Nice to see it being well maintained after all these years. Though i do wish it some of that modern touch and feel that most apps have nowadays, but I understand simple design is also good too.

One thing i would like to see added is a “Multiple Windows” support for ios. Many times i come across words that use different kanji to another word but at a glance it may look the same (間開聞). I would like to use this feature to do a side by side comparison of these kanjis in order to help with my learning journey. Also this feature will allow for looking up multiple words at the same time increasing productivity. In any case, this is just a personal preference.

Thanks for creating/maintaining this app, dev!

  • Great Dictionary

Have been using this as a beginner and it has been a life saver whilst learning Japanese intensively in Japan.
Would be even better if saved vocabulary lists could be synced across devices for study.
  • Pretty much perfect

This really has pretty much everything you could want from a dictionary, incredible piece of work. Fast and snappy and well designed with excellent features. And for free as well. I’m quite amazed that this persists. Here’s hoping you’re able to continue working on it dear developer! This has really become an important tool in learning Japanese in the last couple of years for me. Indispensable I would go so far as to say!

  • More than just a dictionary

Have relied on this app for several years and use it to study flashcards daily great tool to drill subjects such as dialogue you hear in movies or other sources. When I hear a word I don’t know I use this app to add it to a flash card deck and it learn it through repetition. I also add phrases as supplied in this app.

  • Great App

As someone just beginning to learn Japanese, I can’t speak to the accuracy of the app’s translations. I can speak, however, to how easy this app makes looking up Kanji and Kana. I’ve since wrapped my head around particles and where words begin, but in the beginning it was very difficult to know where to start a search. This app does a great job of intuiting what you’re trying to find and providing you relevant and common results, which can’t be said for the other apps I’ve used. This was actually the second Japanese dictionary app I downloaded because I was unable to find any entries in the other, and this app has since replaced it. You can then build lists of words you’ve searched and study generated flash cards of those words in the spaced repetition format common in apps like Anki. The flash cards include a scratch pad for Kanji and although you can’t add pictures to go along with the words, I find the organic nature of looking up words creating the decks makes up for it. Granted I’ve never actually messed with Anki but that’s a separate issue. Anyway, I’m getting off topic. Great app. Download it.

  • Shirabe Jisho: I have been studying

Japanese off and on since 2020, l do believe. During that time I found this app and been using it off and on since. However, I have used it quite frequently last year to now. In the beginning it took me awhile to learn how to use this app and no fault to the designers. I would get frustrated with myself for not knowing how to use it. That made me try other Japanese dictionaries only to come back to the app each time. This got me to learn and appreciate this app each time.

One night I played with this app and discovered so many new things that other Japanese dictionaries didn’t have. The designers continued to add new information that intrigued me each time I would leave the app and come back to it. I can describe so many neat things this app has. But the best thing to say is if you are learning the Japanese language and looking for a good Japanese dictionary app, please try this one. Don’t do like I did going back and forth.

I have discovered using this app that I don’t need to use other learning Japanese language applications because I can learn everything I need to know in this dictionary, even pronunciations.

  • Great!

Much better than the other free 英和・和英辞書 (English/Japanese, Japanese/English dictionary) apps, and includes a 字典 (kanji dictionary) and 姓名字典 (name dictionary) to boot! I’d absolutely give it five stars, but I do have some minor complaints:
    1. There should be a “Share” action and/or Shortcuts actions to look up a word. It’s annoying to have to copy to clipboard, open the app, tap in the search box, and paste.
    2. For kanji listings, the “Grade” item refers to Jōyō grade for 1–6. It clearly has some specific meaning for grades past 6: 7 and 8 appear to also be Jōyō (so maybe 7 is junior high and 8 is high school?) and the numbers continue, but AFAICT, there’s no standard for this and I wish I could tap/hover to see why the kanji is classed in the way it is.
    3. I rarely switch modes since the general “smart” search is almost always sufficient. But when I do because I’m looking up something obscure, I wish it were easier to go completely back to the default. As is, it takes at least a few taps or keystrokes on iPad.
But again, quite minor quibbles. Good app.

  • Amazing app

I haven’t tried any other Japanese dictionary apps but this one is fantastic. Example sentences are great, there is audio for pronunciation, you can search by kanji, romaji or hiragana/katakana, you can search by JLPT level or frequency. My only complaint is that when you copy words to anki the copy button also includes the formatting which is a little annoying. I would pay for this app so it is incredible that it is free and has no ads.
