  • User friendly

This is such an easy app to use, with the ability to look words up via their English meanings, or romaji and hiragana. And the example sentences are very helpful. I’m so glad I found it!
  • Great Great and Great

Alright hear me out, so I wanted a good study app and dictionary and it was a bit hard at first not gonna lie but then I found this app and it changed everything. The app is so easy to use and you can search a word or phrase with ease in many different ways (katakana, hiragana, romantagie and even in english). I downloaded Anki which is the most popular flashcard app but to me this app felt confusing and it felt like there were too many features. This app makes everything so simple and the flashcards are easy to use and the spaced repetition is there. Highly recommend for any Japanese learner at any level. What are you waiting for, go download!!

  • Extremely useful and accurate

the BEST and most useful app for Japanese learning and has helped me get to N1. I LOVE this app and would be so behind without it.
  • この辞書はすごいね!

I am an early-intermediate learner of Japanese that has been studying for about half a year now, and this jisho has been a godsend, supplementing my self study anytime I want to quickly look up something. You can type out a word in English, romaji, kana or kanji and immediately get results… even if you enter the conjugated form of a verb or modified form of an adjective, the jisho will pull up the dictionary (plain) form of the word. It’s seriously awesome! I’m not yet at the level where I can fully read the example sentences that are provided for words, but those are awesome to have, too.

I hope that I can continue to discipline myself to keep up with my studies, and if I’m able to do that, you can bet that this app will be a key tool in my studying kit, right alongside stuff like WaniKani, Anki, and ChatGPT.

To the rest of you learners: 塵も積もれば山となる!

  • The best reference/app for Japanese language learners

This is such an amazing app. Very easy to use and user friendly. It gives you options which content of the app you want to focus on. May it be the word lists for learning new vocabulary, the kanji lists for different JLPT levels , the kana etc.
  • Most complete dictionary in the App Store

This was the dictionary which accompanied me learning Japanese from 0 to N2, during the five years I did my masters and PhD in Japan. It is the most comprehensive dictionary I have found so far, including slangs and popular sayings, and has greatly helped me communicate with my friends and to give technical presentations on my field.

  • Changed my skill overnight

TL;Dr there’s killer feature of highlighting words appearing with high repetition in your daily life. I’ve been stuck at growing vocab for years, and Shirabe Jisho was like pouring gasoline on a fire. I’ve been binge watching Japanese shows, listening to podcasts and reading voraciously over the last 2 months. Everything I see I drop into Jisho. You know how you come across words you’re sure you knew once, but can’t quite recall? Shirabe Jisho provides blue highlighting that shows you all uses of the kanji you’ve come across and bookmarked, and concentrates your learning on kanji/words with high repetition in your daily life. This alone boosted my retention, filled out On/Kun understandings and helped me see the loose connections between the root kanji and broader uses, even in words I already knew.

The input methods for kanji are the cleanest and most forgiving I’ve seen. The bookmark and folder features make it easy to build vocab and make flash cards. The interface lets you click on just about anything (kanji, words, examples).

One feature request: either Apple Watch flash card support or export/import compatibility with AnkiApp.

  • Great Tool for Students

I’ve been studying Japanese at uni for about 3 years now. This tool has been a life saver. It demonstrates how to draw kanji, shows alternative kanji that may be out of date but you could still encounter, and shows if a word is commonly used.

Additionally, it has lists of words sorted by their JLPT level, a way to bookmark words you need often, and though I haven’t used it much, there is a flash card section.

Best of all, it’s free to use and has no ads. Truly, all they ask of you is to leave a review if you like the app and with my satisfaction that was no problem at all.

  • Small new bug

Love this app, I’ve been a loyal user for about 7 years now and recommend it to everyone who has iOS and wants to learn or speaks Japanese. I’ve even recommended it to native Japanese speakers who want to learn more English! Usually, the app feels extremely smooth and intuitive to use, and I rarely come across any bugs.

The update yesterday introduced what seems to be a small bug, though. The font sizing is now displayed inconsistently when searching. For example, if I search “magazine,” the entry for 雑誌 and 蔵 at the top are much smaller than 雑誌社 right below them. Same for several of the other entries like マガジンラック is the normal size, whileデータマン is noticeably smaller.

  • Super useful for use alongside language-learning apps!

For me, this app makes sense of some of the peculiarities of a certain popular language app!
It helps me learn and remember which particular words and meanings are used in certain contexts.
I love to use the search bar and favourite/bookmarked words function to discover and categorise word meanings, and decipher sentences word-by-word from my other language-learning app.
