  • **Warning: Miscalculates average !**

I loved this app, but sadly just discovered that it badly miscalculates averages. For example, if you play 30 minutes for 3 days in the week, and 90 minutes on another 3 days, and 0 minutes on one day, it will display your “weekly average” for the whole 7-day week as 60 minutes “per day.” It won’t count the day with 0 minutes. That’s bad math. The average should actually be 51.4 “per day.” My numbers varied a lot, so the app’s error wasn’t apparent at first, and now I realize I’ve been practicing much less than I thought. Would’ve been nice to know my real numbers. That’s the *sole* purpose of the app for me and many others. And it failed. (Also it needs an export function!!)

  • Very expensive!!

I am using the free version which is great. It’s a real shame because if it was £10-£20 one off cost I would buy the full version but the subscription is a way too expensive. I’m sure they would get a lot more people buying if it wasn’t so crazy expensive.
  • Absolutely love this app

It’s genuinely saving me so much time and my focus has really improved using it, what a gem to be able to harness all that I’ve learned with such a beautiful and simple interface!!!
  • Pretty Useful

I discovered this app on the Mind Over Finger podcast (which if you’re into effective practice and reading this you should probably check out too), I’ve only been using for a week but I definitely see an improvement in my approach to practice and probably even motivation.

I use it in combination with other apps since I find the subscription model too much for me, I’m not exactly sure about the extra features on it but the only thing I feel I’m missing in the free version is the unlimited notes. Weirdly I find that that limitation ends up helping me focus on the one note I do have per piece and maybe even works for the best. I use other apps (and pen and paper) for more detailed journaling and note taking, but the practice list feature is unique here so I mainly use that.

Definitely recommend the free version, I mean it’s free and if you don’t see the benefit of the subscription it still has enough features to be useful. I’m guessing the subscription is geared towards classical musicians or maybe to make you more accountable to yourself.

There is an bug where when you click the note you have while a recording is being played the recording stops and doesn’t play again anymore (virtually lost) so if you try taking a note while listening it won’t work

  • Decent but not worth subscription

Good app and as a one of payment I'd happily purchase but not worth a monthly fee.
  • It helps me accountable to my goals

Modacity’ s time accounting and history are much easier to work with than my paper notebook. The app is well designed to focus my attention on the things I choose to practice.
  • Great but flawed

The app does exactly what I need in terms of tracking my practice. Would recommend but I cannot: it requires an 8.99/month subscription to access the stuff you want out of a practice journal (history). I’d happily pay 20-30 bucks for a one-time fee…. but $110/year? No thanks.
  • Amazing

Clearly, this is the best app !!!! It is a wonderful “partner” in my practice :))
  • Great app

I came across Modacity while testing each of the music practice apps; having recently returned to playing music again after a very long break, I needed an app which supported my practice and practice planning, especially across several instruments, and dividing my time between warmup, technique, new rep and old.

I’d originally overlooked Modacity as it looked so, well, complex and snazzy, however it’s turned out to be the most comprehensive of the music practice apps, and I’m really grateful to be using it, as it’s really helping my return to playing - it certainly offers so much more than the other apps.

It’s really helpful to see how long I’ve been spending on individual pieces and practice lists over time.

I’ve been in touch with them a few times over feature queries and requests, and they’ve been very responsive and nice to deal with.

I know that subscription apps always attract negative reviews over the costs, however I feel that the app is worth the money spent, especially considering the ongoing work on this app.

  • Modacity is the missing link of music apps

There are lots of great music training apps out there. I particularly love and use forScore, Anytune pro, intonia, cello drones, and others. This app fits a niche I hadn’t realized was missing. It lets me easily organize and work through all of the small things I need to focus on for deliberate practice. For example, I have a playlist focused on open string tone exercises. It also enables me to make a sort of template for tracking each step for learning an etude (using notes within a piece). Finally, it relieves the stress of thinking about ‘time’ by incorporating it as an element of a given task or set. I find I’m less overwhelmed and more able to simply hone in on making small, measurable improvements in a session.
