  • Modacity

I needed a way to track and manage my banjo practice. I started to build an Excel spreadsheet, but then my wife said “there must be an app that does that!” After researching several free and paid apps, Modacity seemed to be the best fit for me. It allows me to create tailored practice sessions that I can then record and review. The stats function shows me exactly how much time I’ve put to each session, rank my progress and prioritize future sessions. After 8 day of using the free version I was convinced that Modacity was improving my practice sessions, so I upgraded to the premium version to maximize its’ capabilities. Modacity is a great app to add discipline, focus and structure to your music practice. Even for banjo players!

  • So far awesome.. 1 tweak would make it even better

Just started trialing the free version and can definitely see how this will improve my practice time. I want to get super familiar before upgrading to subscription. The only thing I’ve noticed so far is that it would be useful to be able to adjust volume of the drone in the metronome.
  • Favorite practice app

I have been using this app for two years now and it’s the best!! I like that I can see how many minutes I spend on each practice item every week (warm up, Solos, different instruments, etc). Seeing the charts and my weekly average helps me increase practice time at a safe rate. I have dealt with several chronic injuries so health is important! I was a beta tester and the creator listened to and implemented some of my feedback. This app is great for music majors or anyone who is serious about music!

  • Not great on iPad

I use an ipad in landscape orientation. The app appears to be written for an iphone in portait, so it doesn’t support my device or the way I use it. Other than that it seems nice.
  • Subscription strategy needs work.

It’s ok. If I were preparing an audition, probably better than ok. There’s far better drones (TonalEnergy). But I get it keeping things simple and all under one roof. Price, again might be worth it for intense audition prep, otherwise way too much. But my main gripe is that at the end of the trial it automatically starts charging unless you specifically stop it. Age old magazine subscription dodge and I got snookered. Tried the app, wasn’t enamored, stopped using it and forgot about it. Until months later I noticed a bill. I know, it was me being scatterbrained. I could talk to the developer and likely get a friendly resolution, but they shouldn’t use these sales models in the first place. It leaves a bad taste and makes it less likely I’ll come back to the app in the future.

    Developer Response

Hey Ben! Yes you could have talked to us :) As for the subscription model, that's just how apple handles it. They auto-charge after the free trial - for every app in the app store which uses a free trial system. We wanted to offer free trials to musicians such as yourself so that you wouldn't have to pay up front, and that means playing by Apple's policies. Anyway wishing you much effective practice! Modacity's not just for audition prep. It's worth staying goal oriented and time-efficient even during more casual phases.
  • Subscription is a deal breaker

I used this app for a couple of weeks and have to admit the user experience is great. Best practice app that I found by far. I would gladly pay $20 or more upfront but the subscription model is just too steep for the features. I could only justify a subscription model if it included some strong online features (social/sharing).

  • Expensive subscription just to get stats & metronome

The pros : good looking app.
Cons : As it states you need subscription of $8.99/month which is expensive so you can access metronome and statistics. I already have an excellent metronome for free. I’ll go back to my excel sheet for my stats
  • Very good practice tool

I like this app - once I got the hang of the different actions and how they’re I started to quite enjoy this app. I have two issues though - first, with one action (opening the “recent playlist”) I perform it consistently crashes but I don’t lose any data, no biggie but it’s annoying. My second issue is I’m not quite sure why there’s a monthly subscription cost, this app is basically what you see is what you get - if there’s no dynamic type of content where there’s nothing new I have to question why I must pay over and over again for the same content.

  • Fantastic design and great features

After seeing this app recommended on auditioncafe by Jason Heath, I immediately downloaded it. I love all of the reminders and ways you can really customize your ability to practice. This system really works great with my calendar that I’ve planned out what I’ll be practicing when to allow me to remind me and keep me focused!

I am in absolute LOVE with the interface and UX design- incredible. I do wish, however, that features were able to be unlocked with a one-time payment rather than having to pay monthly for the service. I like to just get it out of the way rather than have the feeling of a recurring payment dragging on me for only a couple of features that could be replaced with an app that I already have (like TonalEnergy for the met and drone).

I do absolutely love how this app makes me feel and I can’t wait to start practicing with it.

  • Outstanding App and great customer service

After initial reservations (particularly considering the price) I had a couple of email exchanges with them and decided to take the plunge. Boy, am I glad I did! This app has become the central pillar of my daily practice routine.

As a busy pro trumpeter it can be difficult to make sure you’re on top of everything you need to keep in shape - especially if you’re on the road. Modacity allows me to plan routines ahead of time and to ensure that they all get done (usually). When your chops feel bad you can look back at what you’ve been practicing and see if there’s any correlation. Same when they’re feeling good - and everything in between. This allows you to build an optimum schedule where you know all aspects are being covered and you just vary the exercises periodically.

You can build and save all kinds of practice routines for all kinds of circumstances and I feel that the app keeps my chops in peak shape.

However, for me the best feature is the instant record function. The press of a button will record what you play and then play it back to you. WARNING: If you’re anything like me, you might not be as good as you think you are! 😉It can be brutal to hear what you play but it certainly focuses the mind on what needs improvement. You also have the option to save the recording for later comparison (did I get any better?)

All in all I can’t recommend this app highly enough. It’s worth every penny.
