  • App could be better

I don’t like the app it is just designed to find a reason to show how bad of a driver you are. The smooth driving section is a joke there’s so many potholes and cracks in the road where I drive, I get low scores all the time because of it. It’s not my fault the road are bad. This system need to be upgraded to know when people are using headphones or Bluetooth in the car to know when talking on the phone. To lose point when your following the law is crazy.
Y’all need to get rid of the time of day stuff. I have a job where I work odd hours. There never a good time to drive according to your app I lose points all the time on that thing. So far this app could be so much more but until you fix those flaws, this is just a one star app to me. It seem to me this thing would be better for teenagers who are just learning how to drive. Not for adults

Smooth Driving is a measure of how well the driver anticipates traffic flows based on the amount of acceleration and braking that are performed throughout the trip. The Phone Habits score measures the likelihood of an accident based on phone usage, even if you are using it hands-free. Keeping your phone in a phone holder will help keep it stationary while you drive and improve your score.
  • Tracking in not Great

This app is not the best tracking app that I have used with an insurance provider. There is no way to explain phone use when driving that isn’t made by the driver unless the entire trip is changed to passenger. The amount of time given to confirm a trip is much too short. 24 hours to confirm trips is ridiculous. This app is the last app on my mind when driving and or living my busy life. The smoothness rating is for lack of a better word dumb. It does take into account the type of phone mount you might be using. My mount in particular moves around a lot although it keeps my phone mounted on my dash. This app would better serve customers if we were given at minimum a week to confirm trips. I went on vacation and at my destination I traveled via shared ride services and forgot to confirm that I was a passenger so now those are recorded as my driving trips. Again, I am definitely NOT thinking about logging into this app while on vacation. This app is a joke if used by insurance carriers.

Thank you for your feedback on the period to change a trip, and ability to indicate phone use by the passenger. For your next trip, you can pause the app in the more menu for a period of time.
  • Smooth driving flaw

I’ve used a few of these driving habit tracking apps through the years and this one seems to be the most flawed of the bunch. The “smooth” driving score seems to be wildly inconsistent and I suspect it detects movement from speed bumps and rough roads to deduct from your score. I did a test drive where I drove like an 85 year old grandma driving extremely gently with the brakes and acceleration but included some speed bumps and a stretch of rough road and received a score of 56! I also suspect that if you take your phone out of your pocket immediately when you arrive at your destination that it also uses that to deduct from your smooth driving score. I’ve also noticed the same bug with CarPlay and receiving a low phone usage score when my phone never left my pocket.

If your phone is in your pocket while driving, that can adversely impact your smooth driving and phone habits scores. Keeping your phone in a phone holder will help keep it stationary while you drive and improve your score. The Phone Habits score measures the likelihood of an accident based on phone usage, even if you are using it hands-free.
  • Intrusive, impersonal, inaccurate program

A faulty program designed with “Big Brother” overtones. Results can be seriously skewed by inadvertent or intentional movement of your phone. Improving results is left up to nebulous, unidentifiable concepts that tell you that you need to improve but not how. There are no baseline parameters that identify what each category requires to get 100%. Nor are there any specific identifiers as to what you did wrong to get a substandard score. To be evaluated by a subjective, analytical set of algorithms for a year without any specific remedial feedback is tantamount to saying, “your not doing well, just do better”. As a teacher we were required to have stated goals and objectives. We established identifiable tools for measuring progress. Most significantly, we provided numerous ways for remediation to achieve 100% success for anyone willing to work hard. None of these elements exist in this program. Very frustrating for anyone not satisfied with status quo.
After 2 more months of use the program is still punitive in nature and insufficient in its ability to give specific information on how to do better. If a program cannot tell you in detail how to get 100% success all of the time it is biased and skewed in the direction of “one standard fits all”. There is no remediation or specific instructions prior to your multiple infractions. And the bonus is, it affects your insurance.

We're sorry that you didn't find SMARTtrek helpful. Our intent is to help build awareness of when, where and how to improve driving behaviors. Green scores indicate that you are driving safely. Tips to imrpove your yellow and red scores are provided on the dashboard by swiping on the dashboard dial. Also, braking, accelerating and phone distraction events are shown for each trip on a map when a trip is selected from the trips list.

  • Nice app but

So I’ve been using this app for about a week and overall I think it’s pretty fair and accurate with the grading except for phone use and smooth driving, I was on the road the other day and I received a phone call now my car has full Bluetooth so it’s completely hands free and it dropped my phone score to 45 but how ? This is the only app I’ve used that penalizes you for using your phone through blue tooth so I’m very unhappy about that and the smooth driving part, I live on a major highway so for me to not pull out and accelerate a bit quicker is sometimes my only option. I do not slam on my brakes unless someone else does or if someone cuts me off so I do not agree with this factor of driving. My score will always be lower on that part. So with that being said I’m not overly happy about this app

  • Terrible App!

As others have reviewed the scores are terribly flawed. If you’re streaming, using a mapping app, hit a bump in the road, check a text while in a line, etc it thinks you’re using your phone while driving. It lags minutes after you have parked, scoring you down for running into 7-11 with your phone. It doesn’t apparently account for speed bumps in “smooth driving.” The speed counter accounts for its own preference and maybe outdated posted speed limits let alone flow of traffic. Anticipating versus reality of making good choices does require judgement of when to slow and when to speed up, or make an evasive maneuver. Some of it is likely a flaw in the the many different motion sensors in so many available phone…overall this is TRASH!

We're sorry you don't feel the app is accurate. The scores measure the probability of having an accident. If your scores are green, then you are driving safely. We hope you continue to use the app.
  • Agree this is super flawed

I have a Subaru. I use the Apple CarPlay for streaming my music and the GPS. That is considered phone use and it is stated that this type phone use can distract you while driving. There is no way around that. It is unfair to give me a bad score for using my GPS through the Apple CarPlay and not give a bad score to someone using a GPS system in their car that’s not linked to the phone. It is also not fair that streaming music through my Apple CarPlay gives me another bad score but using a radio does not. That is targeted use and needs to be remedied by the techs in the near future. I also noticed that my phone gets a score of 94 even though I have it stationary in a holder (as recommended) and so not touch it. So I get 6 points knocked down because my phone moves with the car. I cannot leave the phone at home because then you can’t track my driving. That’s just plain wrong. Nice we got the initial discount but wondering is it really worth it? It is certainly aggravating.
    Thank you for reading.

A phone score in the 90's is great! In general, green scores indicate that you are driving safely. After program completion, achieving a discount means that you are a safe driver and it will apply each year when your policy renews. We hope that you continue to use SMARTtrek.
  • Completely inaccurate

This app is terrible and it’s very unfair that insurance companies are using it to determine insurance costs.

It says that I walked 17 miles on a day when I never left my office (and specifically was in the same conference room for 8 hours). The map shows multiple several mile walks…unless someone took my phone for a walk many times without me knowing…

If you have your phone in a holder and use it for navigation it docks points for phone use even if you don’t touch it. If you drive in the city, where there’s constant stop & go traffic, you’re dinged for that. If you have to drive over trolley tracks or a pothole (again, city driving), your penalized. I also can’t help the time I need to go to or leave work yet it penalizes you for driving too early or late.

Really terrible. The developers really have a lot of work to do to make this usable/useful (although their customer is the insurance company, who gets to raise rates on people with low scores, so I guess the developers know who they have to keep happy).

It sounds like there might be a problem with your phone setings. Please contact Customer Service at 1-800-814-4684 for assistance. We believe safe drivers shouldn’t have to pay more than their fair share for auto insurance. Since scores are determined over a period of months, a single event, score or trip may not have a significant impact on the overall score.
  • Set up for Failure

Regardless you’ll never get a wonderful score! I am so conscious and careful. I can not control what time my kids start school which have no bus service - 2 miles away but I’m “dinged” for the time of day I drive, for phone use and smooth driving. You will never get a perfect score on phone use because the Apps always running- regardless you’re not touching or using your phone while driving! Smooth driving- it’s a joke. Regardless of how slow on a rough road, speed bumps, etc… you’re dinged!!!! I am so slow accelerating from a stop or slowing down but it doesn’t matter. It will be interesting to see our savings in months from now from this “false accounting” app.

The overall score measures the likelihood of having an accident based on a variety of risk factors. Since scores are determined over a period of months, a single event, score or trip may not have a significant impact on the overall score. Green scores indicate that you are driving safely and discounts earned will apply at every policy renewal.
