Aesthetically, it’s good. Technically, it needs work.

The app has a slew of issues. I did like some of the upgrades, for instance, the app looks much cleaner. But with that change, most links won’t appear on the app, making the “daily deals” a useless article through the app. There is also no way to currently search for articles, videos, or reviews. All in all, as it stands, it’s easier and functions better to just open the site through the internet and avoid the app.

Update: they have added a way to bookmark and search items. But some previous features are still missing such as turning off video auto-play, hiding review scores, and quality of life settings.

New app update fixed the lag but battery and data problems still remain.

Hey, I really enjoy looking through the ign content and it has been my go to for game info for probably a decade. With that being said I have had to revert to using the website version (which I feel is serviceable at best) because the newer iOS app is a disaster. *Edit: originally the app was a disaster because it crashed and wouldn’t scroll correctly. Now those problems are corrected. However worse and more insidious problems came with it. I’ve had to turn off cellular data for the app because it will blow through all of my data while running in the background. All in one night. I just wake up to a flood of texts saying I’m at 25% of my data, 10% data, 0% data, etc. Very worrisome. Turning off cell data helps this but at home when I’m connected to wifi it still runs through data and I wake up with a low battery. What gives? They said this was fixed on the last update but I assure you it remains an issue.

Response from developer

Hey there! If you get a chance, check out our new 6.1 update that includes search, as well as bug fixes for videos causing background data and battery usage.

Completely unusable

News feed jumps about randomly. Articles disappear and change position. Constantly signs me out meaning I’m always seeing adverts despite paying not to (I’ve now deleted membership) No notifications or possible way to see who has liked/replied to my comments so the whole social side of IGN is gone. The app looks ok on iPhone but hideous on iPad. Completely broken now. Shame because I used to check it everyday.

Edit** Somehow this terrible app has gotten even worse. It now won’t let me comment at all. Tells me I need to sign in to comment even though I’m already signed in. Only way to fix it was to delete the app and reinstall it but this ‘fix’ only lasted a few days. The app just isn’t worth the time to do that all the time.

Lazy app that doesn’t work

Things the IGN app doesn’t do
-allow you to comment without bugging out
-allow you to stay signed in between uses
-allow you to see replies to comments
-show you the most recent posts
Things it does do
-constantly tells you “sign up to post” even though you’re signed I
-log you out randomly while using the app
-shows you random articles and reposts of articles instead of recent news
-shoves ads down your throat at every second, in the main menu, the articles, even before ads for videos they were paid to post
This app does nothing well and never really has worked well. Though it’s more recent updates make the app look empty and unappealing. Not that it matters because I’m kinda tired of IGN articles anyway, who wants to read an article titled “is there an end credit scene to …” and get 6 paragraphs on the success of the movie, 4 on the history of end credit scenes and then a one sentence at the end that’s actually relevant to the point of the article. My sister is an English teacher and she actually has me send her articles from IGN because they’re so poorly written they make great examples of how not to write articles.

Excessive data usage

The app was much better a year ago, it has far less accessible content now.
It also runs my phone very hot due to constantly working even in stand by, which brings me to my next point as of last update it now eats up all my mobile data

Old app worked better

IGN refreshed the app but came with so many bugs which can make it unusable at times. Don’t bother trying to watch videos on it, I usually find after several attempts having to watch the same advert over and over due to the fact that the screen goes black once it has finished. It also sometimes opens an article when you are scrolling forcing you to go back and start from the top of the newsfeed. They removed the search button for some reason so you can’t find any previous articles and can’t filter to reviews only as you used to. Also encountered recently that it refuses to load anymore articles as you go down the newsfeed leaving you with a constant buffering icon.

App refresh is bugged

This is an update to a review I posted a while ago. Whilst the app has improved over time, there is a significant issue with the current version which I’ve noticed for a while - whilst scrolling through latest stories, the app will background refresh the list which completely reorders it and therefore loses your place in the timeline. This is really frustrating, and often stories just disappear from the “Latest” tab when this happens. Would be great if this could be fixed and would subsequently put the app back to 4 or 5 stars as it would have been before the “new look”. The list of stories should only refresh when I choose to pull down and refresh it.

Previous review:
I rarely write reviews, but had to for this. Love the app and have used it for years in its various versions, but the new dark mode implementation is poor- it’s impossible to read some of the text. Grey text on black background is not a good reading experience and black text on black background is totally unreadable!! This update needs to be rolled back or fixed fast.

Broken

I’ve never reviewed an app before, but I want some way to just maybe let ign see how broken this app is. The in-app video player is a mess. It takes forever to load no matter where I am, and if you’re watching more than one video a day prepare for the same ad before every video. They’ve completely removed the search option so finding past content is nearly impossible. And worst of all, nearly every time I scroll down a ways it suddenly reloads the screen to load in ads and the articles I was looking at have disappeared. This app used to be great, but when they did their redesign it broke so much. IGN itself usually has great articles (minus the never ending “top 10” lists…just stop that). I wish it were easier to get to them though.

Ad Simulator

If you want to click and look through ads, search no further! More ad than text, the ign app does away with pesky nerd culture and replaces it instead with ad culture! Trying to scroll through a review? Oops you clicked an ad! Find an interesting comment from a user? Oops, that’s an ad! Thinking of learning a bit about the latest piece of hardware? Just kidding! It’s more ads!

In all seriousness, the website outside the app works fine, but the app itself is unusable with an iPhone. Clicking and dragging to scroll auto opens any videos. This means… you guessed it! Clicking on every single ad in every single article.

If this is fixed maybe I’ll change review, until then… don’t download the app.

Good for news updates but has tech issues

IGN’s app is great for keeping up on all the latest gaming and movie news, but recent updates have provided more technical issues than ever before. Video playback is finicky and sometimes it takes several refreshes to get updates to pop up. I’ve also been using this app across at least 3 different iPhones over the past, and every time I’ve had a problem where this app is the biggest battery killer over any other app I use. I’ll have it open for maybe 5 minutes and my phone will be extremely hot. No other app does this. Other than that, great gaming news and they are always on top of that in a timely manner.
