GasBuddy shows wrong prices

It was around 5pm. I was looking into cheap gas stations all over my county. I went to the cheap one, according to GasBuddy, and the gas was like half a dollar more. I checked before going there, and it was showing that some user submitted a price to that gas station a few hours ago. So, it was suppose to be the correct price. It’s not like the price was submitted by some user yesterday, it was a few hours ago.

To my surprise, the gas price was around 50 cents more. I was like ok, I’ll drive to another one. And I drove to another 4 stations and they all had users submitted prices around a few hours ago, but in fact, when I came there, they all had prices around 50 cents more. And the distance between all of them was like 5-25 minutes, so it’s not like it’s a location issue where all gas station owners updated their prices in one specific area.

Nevertheless, I don’t know what happened, but the gas prices showed on GasBuddy are wrong. Even if it was updated by some user a few hours ago. I don’t think all 5 users had to lie about the price at the 5 stations I went to, but if they did GasBuddy need to do something about users who lie about the price because I drove to 5 gas stations and they all had much higher prices that it was showing in the app.

Wrong prices

What’s the point of this app if anyone can post false prices whenever they want

GasBuddy might analyze certain folks activity

Users input/share most of the gas prices shown. A few are input by the entity supplying/providing the fuel. In addition to a “list” of nearby fuel-stations, a map also provides prices. Prices depicted are normally fairly accurate. A range of prices for nearby gas is also given.
Unfortunately there are individuals that purposefully/routinely/constantly input/share inaccurate fuel prices. For years, numerous times of day, user <Bev888> inputs onerous fuel prices for a local Boulder City Terrible Herbst Chevron. For over a year $5.19/gal is the price that <Bev888> inputs many times a day for that Terribles’ Chevron after others have posted the correct price. This fake-price skews the range graph causing some folks to go out of their way because they believe the price that <Bev888> has posted, when in fact the actual price is (currently) $4.09. The scuttle-but is that [s]he lives in the adjacent Elderly Facility.
Gas Buddy needs to determine who these Fake-Pricers are and limit such onerous posting. A rational comparison of inputs could solve this issue.

Data sellers

Handy app but they sell data on your driving habits to insurance companies affecting everyone’s rates

NO LONGER GREAT

Now you cannot use the App unless you create an account for auto recall notices. I want privacy.

big brother spying

they report your driving behaviour , speeding etc to insurance companies by using the location data while you drive.

Just use the web, they sell your data to insurance companies

Granted, I use Aviva Journey, where I get tracked by my insurer. With a maximum of 20% discount (100% driving score), I’m currently scheduled to get 18% at my new renewal (due to me having 98%). I don’t care that this app tracks me because I will see about another $25 discount upon renewal, but GasBuddy doing it for free? Nah.

Granted, keep in mind the app and to use the service is free, so they need to make money to stay operational. I just think they approached it wrong.

Do not use this app if you are concerned how your driving will be potentially perceived by your insurer, which could increase your rates.

Wrong prices

I used to enjoy this APP, but constantly going to gas stations and gas is much higher than recently reported, very frustrating!

Recommended Changes

I’ve been using GasBuddy for a long time and more often now because of the crazy gas prices. I haven’t use every feature on the app. However, I have a recommendation because of an issue I ran into today and I want to say it’s happened before. Instead of listing gas prices as Regular, Mid-Grade, and Premium can you change it to the associated numbers? Ofcourse, I’m not saying issues won’t happen and prices could be wrong depending on who’s reporting (pretty sure the owner reported once because the price was significantly higher). Which brings me to this…I was just at a gas station reporting Premium gas at 3.99. I’m fairly certain that the vast majority of the United States..like myself.. .consider premium to be 91 or 93. Well, the reporting for this station only listed regular (3.39) and premium (3.99). Sounds fair right? Well, that 3.99 price was for 89 and their price for 93 (they didn’t have 91, which happens sometimes) was 4.49. Given that I was low on gas I was forced to bite the bullet and put enough in to get me to the next one when I had time to stop.

Just trying to help users not run into issues later down the road and helps make it more accurate if we can list every option and not give any room for confusion when reporting prices, whether it be by users or owners of these gas stations.
