  • Edit your OneNote files from your Mac

I love this app. Finally a way to edit and deal with my MS Office OneNote files from my Mac.
  • Disappointed

I have tried to appreciate this app (and the iPad version) many times but always ended up disappointed. I think well intentioned but never quite managed to deliver. Today I thought I’d finally give the Mac OS app a go, as a better way to connect with my OneNote online.

The sync didn’t go right (whether Outline or OneNote was at fault was hard to say). An old deleted note turned up, some notes didn’t turn up at all, and then, hello!!! they were deleted from OneNote. Fortunately not many and I could largely reproduce them but if you have a large OneNote Online notebook, don’t even think about syncing to it for fear you may lose more than you gain.

At the current rate I think Microsoft will get a Mac OneNote version out there (in the race against Evernote) before this reaches a useable form - which is a shame, as I’m pretty sure the developers have tried hard to fill a major gap in the market, but didn’t quite hit the mark.

  • Great app, but missing spell check

Beautiful app, works great easy to use, but lack Spellcheck. I find I that I have to constantly be retyping a lot of things that could be fixed with autocorrent/spellcheck.
  • nice, but not a polished up app for people who like to edit and use mac functions

Can’t use the mouse over dictionary function on words in the outline app. Not user friendly for people who use this function to look up words regularly. Also If your copying a ppt slide across to the app, the content of that slide is not editable in the app. App is seriously not editor friendly.
Opening a new notebook each time requires you to find a place in your computer to save files. Why not just have a default save place, such as a folder. Really time consuming to find an organised place and search through your computer each time.

I like the software in general but one big flaw is the lack of a spell check feature. If I would have known this I wouldn’t have bought the software. Which is sh$ty because it interfaces onenote files well.
  • Synchronisation with Onenote wrecks your files

I bought this in the hope I could use my OneNote files seamlessly on the mac and iPad. Within a few hours, Outline for Mac made me create some pages that would not synchronise to OneNote, some pages that were in a different place than in OneNote, I could not reopen the file in OneNote because it led to a crash, and in the end I lost some vital business information - and about 8 hours of my time. I sent a message to their helpfile but of course did not get an answer.

If you have anything valuable in your OneNote files, don’t get anywhere near this programme.

Nice try, but I think in this case Microsoft just offers the better option - a well functioning iPad app and using the genuine OneNote via Parallels installation, until one day hopefully they will release an updated office for mac including OneNote.

  • Not a OneNote replacement (yet)

I was hoping to continue using OneNote on my mac using Outline.
Unfortunately, several functions are not present or implemented well. There is no “Find Tags” functionality that I’ve been able to find - so all my starred, check-box and question mark tags are not searchable. The search functionality is a little slow and glitchy - e.g. highlighting of search terms in notes seems to only work sometimes when looking through drop-down search results below the search box. There is also no search scope, so I can’t restrict a search to one notebook or one section only.
The UI layout is clean and beautiful, but functionality as a note-taking and note-retreival tool is way below par unfortunately. I’ll return in 6 months or so to see how it progresses, but I fear by that time I might have figured out how to migrate properly to Evernote or something else. I really wanted Outline to work for me, as I have found OneNote to be highly productive for me. Alas, Outline is not there yet.

  • Issues with Syncing to SkyDrive

I use OneNote extensively at work but tend to take a Mac with me to meetings (lighter - no need to undock etc.) - as such I was excited to see that Outline had been updated to allow automatic syncing and editing of notes. And for a while, I was extermely happy with it.

Unfortunately, the syncing feature feature is buggy - and it has corrupted my “Priority” notes - i.e. the place where I keep track of my most urgent and important tasks. Part of the reason for using OneNote for saving this information is the fact that it’s constantly backed up to the cloud - to lose this (Outline has corrupted all 3 locations) is a massive inconvenience.

So - if you absolutely depend on OneNote for saving important information, I would suggest steering clear of this app for now.

  • Has potential but needs to be better for me to think it was worth my $$

Here’s what is AWESOME about it:
-looks and feels like Onenote. Many of the same features
-love the “export as pdf” feature. very handy

    Here’s what needs fixing:
-sync errors: lots of them. Synced the first time to my skydrive notebooks, but now is continually giving me “sync errors”
-crashing: this happens at least once a day, sometimes with data loss. unacceptable.
-data loss: when these sync errors or crashes happen, sometimes I lose my data. I have decided to use the Onenote web app until this is fixed so I know for sure my notes will save. I can’t afford to lose my notes!!
-Can’t insert tables: I don’t see anywhere that I can insert a table. In Onenote and on their web app, you just hit “tab” after a word and it will insert a table. Would love it if that could be added, or even a drop down menu to add tables
-Can’t choose style of bullet points
-side bar is huge: no way to minimize it
-problems selecting things: sometimes I try to select one thing and it will select others I don’t want

Has lots of potential to be great! I wouldn’t even mind if it didn’t sync to onenote (so it could just be a stand alone notes program), but it would have to be much more reliable (ie no crashing/data loss!) for that to happen. Hopefully these will be fixed SOON (as in not having to wait a year for an update, like with the last release!). Until then, I don’t think I’ll be using it.

  • I really want to like this but...

I was hoping this would be what I was looking for - a way of keeping my OneNote notebooks when I migrated back to a Mac.
    It’s close.

It looks very nice, and I was able to open the notebooks stored locally on my Mac. But here’s what it does badly:

    1. It is incredibly buggy.
    - About 20% of the time, I lose all of my recently notes I added after closing a notebook
    - It adds or deletes characters, or the cursor winds up out of register with the point it’s actually adding characters
    - When I have multiple text boxes, clicking on one of them will often put the cursor in a different box
    - It has been crashing lately, requiring a forced quit.
    2. The features really aren’t there yet
    - I can no longer access any of my shared team notebooks that reside on a server
    - There is no way to add tables that I have seen
    - The user manual is either terrible (extremely basic) or hidden.
    - There sidebar takes up about 25 % of the screen, with no way to minimize it.

I will keep using this until the next update to give it a chance, but if it doesn’t improve soon, I will bite the bullet and re-type all of my notes into Evernote or something similar.
