Version History of Slack

24.09.40

September 25, 2024

Bug Fixes • Links to external workspaces were returning the error “We’re unable to open this link.” Can you still hear us saying we would never break the chain? Rumour has it the bug has been fixed, so please don’t go your own way. • Magic links were not working when signing in on mandatory 2FA, and there are few things more deflating than a magic trick without the payoff. No-cus pocus. Abra-ca-drab-ra. Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boooo. It’s fixed now.

Bug Fixes • Nothing major to report this week. Nothing minor to report either, as it turns out. Work is still happening, mind you—it’s just more the sort that happens behind the curtain in between scenes at a play. We’re quietly setting the stage for what’s to come.

Bug Fixes • Don’t mind us—just making a few small adjustments to keep the app in tip-top shape. More to come soon. Cheerio!

24.09.10

September 4, 2024

Bug Fixes • Bugs were squashed, performance was improved, work was done, and the result was good. Please enjoy Slack responsibly.

24.08.40

August 28, 2024

Bug Fixes • Some recent statuses were not appearing where they ought to (in the intuitively named “Recent” status section). While it’s true that every day is an opportunity for a fresh start, it’s also helpful to remember the past.

Bug Fixes • Fixed: With VoiceOver enabled, some DMs simply would not open, no matter how much double-tapping you did. VoiceOver was built for increased accessibility, not to make messages literally inaccessible. Our sincere apologies.

Bug Fixes • No big fixes to call out this week, but rest assured, there will be more in the future. Not that introducing bugs is our aim, of course. But missteps, adjustments, errors and corrections — these are the rhythms of life and the price of growth. We hope you're enjoying the ride, no matter where you happen to find yourself at present.

Bug Fixes • No big changes this time around. Sometimes progress is best measured when you turn around and see how far you’ve come. Did you know that we used to be a video game company? Pretty wild. https://johnnyrodgers.is/The-death-of-Glitch-the-birth-of-Slack

24.07.50

Bug Fixes • Fixed: Sharing content to Slack from a different app was adopting a “one-and-done” policy, where all subsequent attempts would not load any channel options in the share sheet. Channels don’t expire, and now neither will your sharing options. • Fixed: There was a conspicuous delay when opening the long-press menu within a canvas (such as when copying or pasting text). Enjoy new snappier menus, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood iOS team.

Bug Fixes • It’s okay to change your mind. Unfortunately, the app’s abrupt crashing whenever a rating was changed within the lists feature seemed to send the opposite message. Edit your lists, update your ratings, understand that the only constant is change.

  • Hopefully setting the stage for better support!

Slack seems to want to participate in the mindless cycle of e-waste generation. Basic maintenance apparently means regular OS upgrades, which of course eliminates systems that cannot receive those upgrades, but are otherwise not only serviceable, but fast.

It’s amazing that you can implement massive creative tools that stretch the limits of the imagination, on hardware and OS that is 5 years old. But chatting? Collaborating? Posting a picture? Basically a glorified IRC system? Nope. That requires Windows 11. That requires macOS Ventura. Next year it will magically require macOS Sonoma.

Of course, some cretin will chime in, blathering about security. Newsflash: a well secured Windows 7 system is infinitely more secure than a default Windows 11 install. The same goes for macOS Catalina, or even High Sierra. Not surprisingly, those systems are actually faster at performing most tasks, as the most observable change to the operating systems over the years has been bloat and inefficiency.

However, on the positive side, Slack cares about its iOS release notes, and always attempts to at least bring some lighthearted humor to the banal experience of updating. They contain some detail, as well, rather than the rote “we are continuously striving to improve your experience”. Slack should actually be in the business of writing release notes for other app developers, and maybe some OS developers as well.

  • Channel Exceptions for Pause/DnD Mode

Overall I enjoy using this app, especially compared to other team communication apps I’ve been forced to use in the past. The only feedback I have is to please enable further options for the Notification Schedule than allow for Channel exceptions.

I mostly use the notifications schedule to schedule out my nights and weekends, but for my job I need to be on call consistently. If I leave the Pause Schedule off I get blasted by notifications that only pertain to me when I’m actively working. So having an option to turn on the Pause Schedule but allow a channel or two to keep notifying me would improve my enjoyment of this app I wouldn’t have to constantly battle between pausing notifications and worry about missing a critical one or leaving it on deal with the abundance of notifications that I need deal with when I’m actively working.

  • This drivers contract just isn’t for me…

I never got a chance to make a delivery or return due to being automatically removed from a scheduled job. The first time this happened I was 10 minutes away from the site at Dean St. when I received the message and was told to message support to find out why. Since I was already in the area I went in to ask in “why” in person. So the person on duty researched and told me that the payment wasn’t confirmed. So that was 2 hours of my time and transportation fees waisted. While we are told to hit start 2 hours ahead, the discrepancy is that the employee possibly starts their trip before that. So the payment should be confirmed sooner than 1hr and 40min before the scheduled destination. So I was hesitant to even try this again and cancelled everything for the rest of the week. The following week I decided to give it another shot only to have another job removed before I even started for the week. At least the second time the automatic removal was the day before! However, this type of system has some quirks! Schedules are made for a reason. I could give suggestions to fix but everything and everyone seems automated/online (message support). Note: Drivers should only be able to schedule Available trips once payment is confirmed. To coincide with the penalty for a driver, if they cancel a scheduled trip.
