  • Extremely basic; poor cloud-based options.

A very basic app, in that it only captures what your LiveScribe pen writes, in black ink. There's no opportunity to change ink colour, and the app does not currently do anything with the numeric symbols (1, 2 & 3) found in the LiveScribe notebooks.

The most annoying feature is that this app provides hardly any feedback apart from the writing. For example, when using the tagging features, it would be nice if the app gave some indication that it had worked, and informed you of exactly what you have just tagged.

The app also tells you nothing about the memory usage on the pen - how do I know when the pen memory is nearly full? What happens then?

It is supposed to auto-sync to Microsoft OneNote, but I couldn't get this to work when logging in with my Office365 details. This is a shame, as I bought the "Pro" version of the pen, for professional use!

It can auto-sync to Evernote, however; it performs a one way sync - my recommendation would be to choose the PDF format.

What's really missing is backup to iCloud, which is a major failing as many iOS users will have an iCloud account.

  • Not writing into notebook

Downloaded apps, set up pen, connected, but still not working. No videos to help. Need step by step instructions on how to start & set up notebooks.
  • $200 wasted-do not buy this pen

I bought the Livescribe Pro edition. At first, all was well except for the fact that my notes were dated for 2019. Then an update came down and since then, I was not able to sync anything unless my app was open. THEN my pen somehow became corrupted and so CS sent me a replacement. And now? My pen won't pair with any device and the notes that I take with my $200 pen in my $25 notebook are the same notes that I would take with a Bic pen in a cheap spiral notebook. I've watched others try to deal with this through their CS support (which can only be accessed via chat or email). The result? Nada! Seems that Apple is being blamed for the delay in fixing their problem. BTW, the last update to the app was almost 3 months ago! Ridiculous. Trying to figure out how to get my money back. This is literally a rip off. I cannot believe that they are still selling this product.

  • Pen is great. The app not.

I decided to revise my review and up it to four stars. I'm still not a big fan of the software, however, I've been using the pen pretty regularly for to-do's and notes, and it's working great for me.

This product is good for me because I still prefer old-fashioned pen and paper. But now my notes are backed up and searchable on my phone, and I can delete the info I no longer need.

The app does have rudimentary sorting features, but they are so poorly conceived they aren't worth the trouble.

The app will upload to Evernote and other programs, however, the data is stored as complete pages -- rather than snippets like in the app -- so very little organization is possible.

The only issue with the pen itself is the USB cap keeps falling off. The plastic part that attaches the cap to the pen seems to bend after a while, and it's not fixable. I ordered a replacement cap but the same thing happened to it.

With all that said, I'm using the pen regularly, so the pros definitely out-weigh the cons.

  • Great hardware, poor software

    Quick review:

Love the pens, been using them for years now. But this latest iteration doesn't cooperate with the software as well as previous pens.

App crashes now every time I record with either of my pens. It's sluggish and doesn't do the job as advertised.

Pencasts take about 5 minutes to load, and regularly crash the app.

Most of the time the Bluetooth connection works fine, but every now and then the connection will drop.

Battery monitor often inaccurate, newly charged pen reads as empty, or nearly dead, then full, then randomly the prompt to tell the battery is almost empty will come up.

Buggy software. Please address or overhaul.

  • I like the pen.

The rest is a gimmick. Tags are weird. No export to plain text, though that's what we WRITE. The "feed" is kinda handy. But ultimately, there's very little one can do with all that recorded info.
Feel a bit scammed by the app which has hardware offering so much promise!
  • Could use some development

The pen works wonders but once the information captured we have to be able to put it to work.

I would love to see better OCR other than export it to a pay service like evernote (i do not like evernote).

    Thanks!
  • Lots of potential, but significant reliability issues

When I first purchased the Livescribe 3, I was very excited about the product and shared it with several of my co-workers. However, after receiving my third replacement pen since January and finding that it is also defective right out of the box, I'm on the verge of giving up. Also, the OneNote synchronization was the one of the primary reasons I first purchased the pen. That worked very well for awhile, but then just stopped working and gave an error message. After multiple attempts to resolve this with customer service, I was told that the next version of the software in development would address the issue and there's not an interim fix. So great potential with this product, but clearly not ready to be released to the general market.

  • Functionality steadily declining

If I'd rated this app + device when I first got it a year ago, I would have given it a higher rating. But for some reason it's gradually performing worse and worse as time goes on. (And yes, I keep the software up to date.) I can cope with the app's persnickety approach to writing recognition -- it's training me to improve my printing once more. But three defects are making me more and more frustrated. 1) the data is very slow to transfer from the pen to the app. Sometimes the transfer stalls entirely and I can only get it unstuck by closing and reopening the app. 2) Entire sections of text fail to transfer at all, even though the pen is functioning properly. 3) Random chunks of handwriting are not converted in the feed. When a particular chunk doesn't convert, nothing I do can change its mind. If I'm ending up re-typing large portions of the text, I might as well just type the entire thing and skip the livescribe part entirely.

  • A Strong Start: Could be even better with improvements

So far, I'm thoroughly enjoying the Smartpen 3 and Livescribe.

However, I find there are some problems regarding functionality that would make the system so much better. So, I'm offering some suggestions from a newly dedicated customer.

    1. It would be great if instead of having the feed be organized only by date (which causes my different notebooks to get jumbled into one big long list) if they could also be (or only be) organized by notebook. Since the feed is the only way to edit the text and organize the content, I imagine it will get even more unwieldy when I have more than just two notebooks at once.

    2. It would also help if we could create more than three tags and if we could even personalize the tags. I use this for research and would like the ability to identify a variety of keywords in my notes.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to seeing improvements.
