  • Where to begin?

    An incredibly useless app
  • Can't load saved trips, can't log in, etc.

Like many other recent reviews here, I used to use this app a lot over the years and it did its job well.
These days however it hangs on the "uploading saved trip data" screen, so have to manually enter trip info every time. It periodically forgets my saved opal cards too, and won't let me reregister them as they're already registered by another user (me).
After updating, reinstalling, and getting perplexed customer support, I can't recommend this app at all. You'll have to bookmark the transport website to look up times, and bookmark the opal website to top up.
Developers, considering the number of users who are having these issues, please work on a solution!

  • Terrible app, flat out doesn’t work

Straight away the app helpfully advertises that I can scan my opal card to get set up. No such functionality exists.

Entering my opal card details manually results in repeated “server error”, doesn’t matter if I try to do so via the registered or unregistered user UX path.

    In short… do better.
  • good enough

I use this app to top up my opal card fortnightly. Just had an issue once where I topped up, they took my money but the amount didn’t get to my opal (they had a glitch that day); I contacted opal, they fixed it straight away and I got my money back. It works well every other time, I never top up any other way! It’s so convenient and fast! It’s a good app, just a little laggy sometimes. I think the trip planner could use some improvements though. I save trips but I can’t seem to reverse some of them (like you can with trip view). But it’s good that the trip planner here is more reliable than other apps tho, because sometimes TripView is wrong.

  • App keeps deleting data

The app has started to delete my card details randomly. Not very helpful as cant easily check balance, check journeys etc. very frustrating.
  • Best public transport system I’ve experienced

This is mostly a review for the public transport system. I always choose rail because buses are unreliable no matter where on earth you are. I have been on trains in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and my home city Sydney. When I was in Brisbane I was on a train that was running late so it skipped a station. I only have been on maybe 5 Qld trains and probably 30 Sydney trains in my life and it has never happened in Sydney which proves Sydney PT is better than Brisbane PT. The trains and stations are clean and there is always a nearby station. Most subway systems are dirty and the trains are old and uncomfortable. But on a Sydney Train the seats are comfortable and the trains
are modern. The downsides are that trains are at my station less often due to the fact that I live in a very suburban area with not many shops, business, etc. Although when I am travelling on a train i notice that there are benefits to the train not stopping at every station. It gets me faster where I need to go. So they just need to have trains running more often. Not sure if opal is in charge of this or transport for nsw. Also at the train station, on the screen it may say 2 minutes until the next train, that then changes to 3 then to 2 then to 1 then to 4. This is not a big problem but overall Sydney PT is a very good system.

  • Useful but buggy & frustrating sometimes

This app is useful. Being able to quickly search for routes from A to B, set auto top-up, as well as save common trips, is nice. I especially like that I can specify whether I want my trip search to be “arrive by X” or “depart before Y”.

But sometimes it doesn’t show trips that should be there (it happened to me once at the train station at 10pm; it didn’t show any of the trains that were clearly running. And other times when it didn’t show trips for public transport that are just minutes away).

And the map just keeps returning to its original state no matter how many times I rotate it or zoom it in/out, it’s infuriating. I rotated/zoomed the map for a reason, so it’s easier to get my bearings when I’m travelling; stop auto-reverting to the default!

And the trip info chin is sometimes REALLY hard to swipe down: like no matter where I swipe it just refuses to go back down and jus let me look at the map.

In summary, my main gripes with the app are the map that simply refuses to stay the way I put it, and occasionally missing trips. I still use the app because it’s mostly good but I’m gonna have to start checkin out other travel apps to see if there’s something better.

  • Feedback is a joke

Doesn’t matter how many times the same problem occurs. Standard answers, that are offensive(they imply you are lying when you are whiteness twice to drivers skipping bus stops to not pick up disabled people when they are clearly requesting to stop and so are other people on the bus stop) or just insulting to your intellect (the temperature is kept constant even when the aircon AND fan is off, apparently magic makes the airflow with no airflow -let’s not forget we have no airflow in public transport during a pandemic). They decide when they want to answer feedbacks too (apparently they get tired of answering the same feedback... and we don’t get tired of sending the same feedback.. apparently we do it FOR FUN!!. Months and months with same issue same busses: nothing done. The customer service of this app is not good... you can look the other feedbacks here and you will see...

  • Feedback

It’s a great app. But with the new Metro train and tram from Circular Quay to Randwick including the Castle Hill trains the announcer need to change the use of language. I was on the tram this evening and a group of white Middle Ages to retirees we’re talking to each other. One older lady said the word “alight” for someone whose a non-English tourist person this word doesn’t mean anything to them. The government need to change the language use through our communications with public transportation to make it more accessible to everyone. I though this was a really good feedback that I felt it was necessary to share with the transport government department. Please change the word “alight” to something else. Keep it simple for example the next stop is Randwick not please alight at the next stop Randwick. Thank you!

  • No Apple Pay

Also took 20mins to update the card with top up. Feels very much like 2012. As a visitor I’m non-plussed.
