Family Seating Complaint – Separated Despite Traveling on the Same Reservation
I would like to share my disappointment with our experience.
My husband and I are traveling on the same reservation, yet we were assigned seats far apart (Row 27 and Row 38). At the same time, many adjacent seats were available only for an additional fee of nearly $400. I don’t understand why a married couple traveling together would be separated when seats together were available.
This is the second time this has happened to us with United. On our previous flight, we were also assigned separate seats, and only a kind gate agent was able to help us sit together because I become very anxious during flights.
I was also surprised that neither of us received the usual email reminder that online check-in had opened. I only discovered it myself by opening the United app about 14 hours before departure. After checking in, our boarding passes were not emailed to us either—we had to download them ourselves from the app.
We have flown with many different airlines over the years and have never experienced anything like this. I hope United will review its seating policy and make a greater effort to keep families traveling on the same reservation seated together without requiring them to pay hundreds of dollars in extra fees.

Doesn't work
It’s unreal how many times I had trouble trying to check in with the app. Really annoying! More if you are away traveling and without a computer.

When checking in, the App recognized an issue. There was a typo in my pre-Check number. Thank you for programming this in so I could fix before arriving at the airport!
Missing Check In Option
I want to check in but I need to go to the check in counter to check my bags. This app won’t allow this.

What happened to loyalty for traveling with United. They keep stripping away perks. $50 for a bag. It is never ending. While their C suits continues to take HUGE bonuses
App not user friendly enough
When searching for my flights it is a little difficult mainly before the flight is “added”. You must click on “check in” to find flight even though it is not time to do so yet. That is not very intuitive

This app has the best functionality of all the major airline apps I've used by a long shot.
That said, there is a significant problem with refresh rate. Updates through text messages seem to occur the instant that changes to a flight occur (seat assignments, delays, etc.) but the app lags far behind the reality of the moment. This creates the problem where you rely on the information provided by the app when, in fact, it may or may not be reliable.
The second issue is the terminal maps. They are useful, but simple things like finding a restaurant seem absent (unless you know the establishment by name) and using the maps for navigation aren't always reliable (changing terminals inside of security versus outside, walking versus terminal shuttles versus Airtrain). Relying on the airport maps for a tight connection feels like a gamble.
Still, the app appears to be improving every month.

Easy online check-in
When we travel with 5 kids we bring a lot of checked bags. I really appreciate the ease and impeccable process to get everything in the plane and to our destination.
