  • Just What I Needed

Since January 2018 I’ve been using Flair vents and pucks with an Ecobee 3, Ecobee remote sensors, and a Samsung mini-split. It took a little back and forth working with Flair support to get the Samsung working with the Flair puck, but now, and with the recent addition of scheduling, everything is working seamlessly.

The vents are very high quality and the Flair controls (app or online) provide a huge degree of flexibility and control, coordinating the AC, Samsung, and vents (open/close) to customize heating and cooling for our needs.

We’re gone a lot in the summer and I generally set the temperature fairly high while we’re gone, but want it comfortable when we return. The Ecobee was pretty good for that, but I really needed a way to remotely turn on the Samsung unit to cool the upper levels while we’re on our way home. With Flair I can now do that.

I’ve been very happy with the support I’ve gotten from Flair too. They worked with me to get the Samsung set up (it was a model they hadn’t seen before, so I had to send my remote to them so their system could learn the IR commands), but that only took a week or so. They’re now working patiently with me to try to get another brand of mini-split working at our summer cabin

  • Could be better

First time setup and the GUI overall could be improved and bettered. Some way to adjust the Pucks temperature offset would be nice cause it seems like it might be off by a couple of degrees.
  • Great option to connect mini splits with Nest

I just had a 5-zone Mitsubishi mini split system for AC installed and was looking for a solution on how to connect it to my existing Nest thermostats. The setup was a bit finicky, but by the 3rd puck you get the hang of it. Now I have 3 rooms that I can control directly from battery operated wall mounted flair pucks and 2 rooms where I have hidden away the puck (and connected to wall power for the WiFi connection) but with line of sight to the AC box and in those rooms I can control the AC from my Nest thermostats (which I put in for my radiant heat system). Works great so far. Once we get to fall I have to make sure the Nest won’t send a heating call to the AC units, but I am confident that’s easy to ensure. So far so good. I don’t think there is anything in the market that works as well for Nest integration.

  • Works well!

I was having serious problems with a hot rooms upstairs. When the upstairs was comfortable, downstairs was freezing. Lots of complaints. Didn't matter how many ecobee Sensors I installed, or fiddled with vents. The Flair vents solved it more easily than I thought. Took abou an hour to install the vents - I got 10 for downstairs. App setup could have been better, but I'm seeing they updated the setup. Flair integrated with ecobee perfectly and I was able to reuse their Sensors. I'm going to put it on a schedule over the next few days because I want to use less AC downstairs when we're sleeping and vice versa. So far we're much more comfortable. I'll keep an eye on it. Might be able to crank out more savings.

  • Geofencing doesn’t work, waste of 100

I have set geofencing in the app, but when I arrive at work (14 miles away from home) the app still says I am home and my Mini Split is running.
Also the mini split runs all day. During winter we set up at temperature for 67 degrees Fahrenheit. When it reaches that heat, it changes from heating to cooling. I do not want to cool my home during winter.

  • Useful but need to improve

The response to command is very slow. The response of Flair smart vent does not match the integrated Ecobee thermostat set point. When you set heating temperature at 70 degrees, the vent does not open even when temperature is 68, although the furnace is already on and send warm air to the closed vent. I suggest to make the temperature range adjustable to match the thermostats.

Also there should be a manual bypass switch that is independent of WiFi on the smart vent or at least on pucks.

Update: the customer technical support can help to adjust control temperature range. After adjustment, the vent works great.

  • Little Buggy but works great, great customer svc.

The app is definitely a tad buggy and likes the settings to be a certain way for things to work properly. It would be nice for there to be a setting to show you in the app if the vent is open or closed (Keen app has this feature). Once you have your system dialed in, it works flawlessly. The vents are good craftsmanship and seal the air well. I tried the Keen Home smart vents and had a problem with there vents not closing completely. They had a terrible lack of customer service. Took week for them to respond to me.
Flair however had impeccable customer service. When I emailed there customer support the owner got back to me within a couple hours and continued emailing me the next day or 2 very promptly until I had my system and setting dialed in working great. They even offered to take some suggestions I had for the app into account.
I look forward to future updates of the flair app and know they will get it down perfect. For a new start up company and product that released a months ago I’d say they did pretty dam good.

  • Not ready yet

Beta product, app is buggy, setup is terrible, and company censors their forums of criticism. Bought 3 pucks to control mini-splits. Setup requires user to manually test multiple possible ir profiles with no positive feedback to verify which profile actually works.
  • Unstable app

Crashed when entering my nest info, setup tutorial got stuck on the last step, and auto connecting wasn’t able to connect to the unit.

Please work out the kinks, the setup process is nearly impossible.
  • Great if you want your heater running in 90deg weather

    I use an Ecobee 3.

It doesn't make rational decisions. For example, I had a 76 degree average temperature in the home, and 90 degrees outside, with a Flair set point of 68 degrees. Every single individual puck and sensor showed that the room was hotter than my set point. I watched it turn on the heater.

I set the app to manual, so I could stop sweating while I tried to figure this out. I changed my Ecobee's settings back to normal, and then the Flair app turned my heater back on, despite it being set to manual. I had to disconnect the Ecobee from the app completely to stop it from turning the heater on.

Occupancy information doesn't get passed from Ecobee sensors.

Can't have it intelligently open and close vents unless you give it complete control over the entire system, which isn't ideal since I've never seen it actually do anything with the thermostat that makes any sense.

But even if it actually did attempt to do something intelligent, "Use thermostat set point" is greyed out, so I can't use the schedule on my thermostat. The app doesn't have its own scheduler, so I'd have to manually turn down the temperature at night since we like it colder when we sleep.

After waiting a year, a huge disappointment. I'm going to try to get a refund. Hopefully they're cool about it.
