  • Useful, but not perfect

I appreciate the ability to gain a discount based on driving and to see how you drive, including the counter on distraction-free driving to give incentive to not use your phone while driving. However, I’d say the app is not perfect.
    Some issues I’ve noticed:
    1. The Projected Policy Discount has never worked (at least for me). It has always said “Calculating…” and I’ve used this app for well over a year. This is the main issue that is consistent and a bit frustrating.
    2. When recording drives, I notice that it shows that I have frequent hard breaking. Now, I know that there are times that hard breaking does occur, but the frequency of them seems too often to be considered true. As a result, the hard breaking category is a much lower score than others, affecting the overall discount.
    3. I know it’s not necessarily the app’s fault, but a lot of the recorded trips are all pieces of whole trip or, it’s only recorded near the end of a trip, when I’ve already driven miles beforehand.
In short, the inaccuracy of the app makes it hard to gain any more than a 10% policy discount, which is a bit disappointing when you’re trying to be a mindful driver and save some money.

  • This App Is A Big Come-On…

The app is very arbitrary- and frustrating! I actually tried to stop using it since it is so annoying and I am not really comfortable being tracked ALL the time, but I CONTINUALLY got messages informing me that they could no longer track my drives, etc. and to do this and do that to fix it, even though I deleted the app! I tried again because I decided I wanted the discount (AmFam ain’t cheap); almost immediately my discount went from 20% to 10%, no explanation. It has not been restored. Today I noticed that once again my distraction-free driving was dinged, with an explanation of phone use in the car. I NEVER use my phone in the car…EVER! I was up to 183 distraction-free trips when suddenly—bam! Many trips are not recorded, or I am marked as the passenger even though I was the driver, and vice versa. What a scam—I don’t believe ANYBODY really gets a good discount for long, because the app is set up to make sure that never happens. It is simply an excuse to operate a tracking device and that makes me kind of nervous. It is a real pain. I’m thinking about canceling again.

Hi there. It's required that you stay logged into the app and open it periodically for it to continue getting a reading on your driving for the discount. If you believe some of your information isn't properly populating into the Know Your Drive app, please email us at knowyourdrive@amfam.com and we can look into this for you. Thanks for reaching out!
  • It’s basically a scam

When signing up for AmFam I did so because the rates were lower than what I was paying from another company. The thing is when talking to an agent or rep I wasn’t told after a year regardless of what my driving showed in the “Know Your Drive” app my rates were going to go up and that I wasn’t going to continue receiving that discount rate from the app for having a god driving record. So I went from a 10% discount to a 5% discount now to a 2% discount and I’m now paying more with AmFam than I was with the company I left them for!!! I don’t feel the “KYD” app serves any purpose because there isn’t a benefit to having it. The app doesn’t keep accurate data anyway it would reset just because you wouldn’t have to touch it but they say you can go into the app and delete a drive but if you know you haven’t done anything why do I need to check the app after every drive. It got to more more frustrating to have the app than not!!!

  • SO sick of the inaccuracy

I understand that it’s an app, and can’t be accurate 100% of the time, but dang! It thinks I’m the drive every single time I’m in a vehicle!! 90% of the time, I leave my apartment with my boyfriend, and he drives. I play on my phone because why not? And the app give you a whopping 5 days to go fix any mistakes! Who would think to check this every 5 days or less?!? I’m a full-time and a half student and working 30+ hours a week to make a living. I do not have the time, energy, or memory capacity to be babysitting the app. If it was more accurate, I’d not have a problem, but every time I go in, it says I’ve got a streak of 0 distraction-free drives. I adamantly do not go on my phone while driving. Texts can wait, and I accept calls through the button on the steering wheel of the car. Now I don’t receive the discount I deserve for practicing safe driving habits because it never thinks I’m a passenger. Nonetheless, you get at least 2% off if you even have the app, which is why it’s receiving two stars from me instead of one.

  • HARD BRAKE

I just used the app today for the first time. Being cognizant of why I’m using it I was concerned about accelerating too fast so I focused on that and slowing down early. I searched for what the developer description of Hard Brake was. A drop in speed of 6.5 mph in one second is considered a Hard Brake. Anyway, checked both trips after returning home and everything was fine. In my opinion the app works great. It made me focus on pulling out into traffic, waiting just a little longer for a bigger gap between cars so I don’t have to rush was the most important thing safety wise. That and slowing down a bit earlier for slightly softer braking. Although hard braking is typically the result of more aggressive driving. I don’t drive aggressively in the first place but I drive defensively and this app only helps me to better focus on that.

  • Inaccurate and inconsistent

I despise this app with a passion!!!! I NEVER use my phone while driving most of the time I don’t even take it out of my purse because I don’t drive often and when I do it’s only to the store which is less than a mile away. But the app says I use my phone 40% of the time I’m driving. Some of this is because I use my phone while my husband is driving but some is for who knows what reason. Because I rarely drive I don’t think to check the app to fix the mistake but my husband and I compared driving scores and mine is awful because I use the phone while he drives, yet his never registers as using the phone while I drive. His drive streak is almost at 400 and mine is always at 0. Also, the braking and acceleration parameters seem ridiculous to me because I’ve almost been hit multiple times when I follow their guidelines. Getting honked at all the time for following the apps rules is frustrating and frankly embarrassing!!!! I’m sure they have a system in place to make sure you can never really get that discount but honestly this app makes me mad every time I remember to look at it because they use a very flawed system.

  • I despise this app - especially as a software engineer

I use this app to get the discount. But quite often it does not record me as a driver but instead says that I was a passenger. It also will say that I was “distracted” (used my phone) which it did today. My phone was in my purse the entire time - I thought it might say that I was a passenger, but nope - it said that I was distracted. I also don’t understand how the discount is determined. Last month I had my greatest “distraction free” driving number recorded and yet my discount went down. My last trip - 60 miles - was not recorded. (Supposedly I have not taken a trip in 5 days.). Typically, I keep my phone on my console for this app. Sometimes it says, I was a driver, sometimes a passenger and yet the last couple of times it did not record at all. It just recorded me as being distracted for almost an entire road trip. Not ONCE did I use my phone. I set up Maps on my Phone prior to driving and that is it. Whoever developed and supports this app should be ashamed.

  • Speed Data and Breaking all wrong.

This app must get its speed data from one of the bad services out there that doesn’t actually check anything. I took a drive to Indian around Chicago highways and set my cruise control under the 10 mile over threshold and I saw my Apple Maps screen constantly change speed to 45 mph when there was an off ramp nearby or show the semi truck speed or lower. This must be buying the same data they use as the trip had lots of red for speeding that didn’t happen. Also in Madison they must not know you might get killed driving less than 15-20 miles over. Clueless garbage. Same goes for normal drives locally. It will indicate you where speeding when you’re driving the posted limit.

Then there is the stupid computation for hard breaking. If you’re turning off a 40 mph+ road with a short turn lane you get automatically dinged for nothing. Apparently it’s safer to go 20 MPH under the speed limit in busy traffic and nearly stop in the turn lane to not get flagged. Likely why the hard breaking averages for users is so high. The formula behind it is flawed. Just seams like another way for AmFam to not give you a discount.

Then there is it flashing messages that you didn’t allow it to use phone services and you check and they are turned on.

Overall feel like this app is a bad thing unless you live somewhere the data feed is accurate. So far I see Illinois and Indiana aren’t places it works well.

  • Not sure this is worth it???

It took forever for me to even get logged in to even load the app. It kept saying the wrong password but when I did a password change (with the same password I had) it finally let me in. This took multiple attempts and unanswered email requests for assistance. Now I’m reading some of these reviews and wondering if it is even worth it. I’m going to give it 30 days and if I have any of the issues that others have had I’m canceling it and may consider getting insurance through another carrier all together. I no longer have the patience to deal with this.

  • Safe Driving

It is great to be informed about our driving. When we get to this age, we feel we know it all because of the many years of experience. This app informs us of different ways to improve and to make improvements that we are not aware of. Thankful for the support
