  • I like the app but « Hard brakes » are not accurate

Overall, I really like the app. The upside is that it really motivates our family not to use our phones when driving. I should confess that before installing the app, i would often let my phone distracts me: looking at my phone at red lights, trying to start music or answering calls when driving. I never do this again. The app really helped to reduce my distracted driving and for that I would give it 5 stars. However, I still think that improvement needs to be made for what the app calls « hard brakes ». It looks to me that hard brakes are not accurate. The reason I say that is that two phones in the same car can record completely different thing. My husband seems to get a lot of hard brakes and I don’t get any. First I thought I was a better driver. But then we realized that when we rode together, his phone would record hard brakes while my phone didn’t record any. If they could solve the hard brake issues, I would give it 5 stars.

  • More engaged

Because of the app & knowing that my drives are being tracked, I’m less likely to touch my phone. Driving an older car, there’s no Bluetooth connection to my phone on the dash, provides a bit of a challenge. Used to check my phone at stop lights. Now only check once I’ve reached my destination or else I pull over & have to get out of my vehicle to use my phone. Can be a hassle, but definitely believe I’m a safer driver & less distracted.

  • Speed Limit Issues

My husband and I keep getting flagged for speeding all over town even though we aren’t. Checked in with our Rep and someone from the app and it was confirmed that the speed limits are wrong in several places around town. If this issue would be fixed the app would be a whole lot better. But as it is, we’re only getting the minimum discount because of a flaw on the developers end…pretty frustrating.

  • Know Your Driver

I have had such a wonderful time using this app. It is so easy and lets me know that my driving time is going well. I am usually not even aware that my driving is being evaluated because they don’t have to install any equipment to do this. You simply just have to have your phone with you.

Also, because it is so discreet, I don’t have to worry about what is commonly called “stage fright”. This is something I know for certain causes me to be so self conscious and that in itself would effect my driving. All in all, this Know Your Drive app deserves 5 stars.

  • Room for improvement

It's nice that they give you driving and general automobile tips within the app. It's also fantastic that you can remove trips if you were not the driver or were taking public transportation. You also get to see if during your trip you braked hard, accelerated fast, drove over 80, or were on your phone. Then it will show you exactly where you did it. That's super cool!

What could be better is if the app showed you how many times you accelerated during a trip. As well as how many times you did it too quickly. The same would go for braking. Then under the sliders that show if you are doing things more or less than the average person there could be a grand total. They could also put the percentage of how many times you accelerated properly.

This should be fairly simple to do because the sliders represent this data. It also stated in the terms and conditions that all driving is stored somewhere. Therefore, having a grand total should be very doable. It would also provide further incentive to drive safely.

Thanks for reading! I hope to see this simple update in the future.

  • I don’t know

I understand the point of this app, but I don’t think it’s effective. There’s no way that you can make serious calculations about a driver with a 2000+ ton vehicle and expect that other vehicles try to concede to other peoples driving. I don’t think that using an app that makes you track every single goal time you walk or drive is that’s good. There’s no way that you can really say that I hard brake? whose decision is it that I hard break ?is there a hard break expert, Who decides whether I can accelerate it very fast or who decides whether I break hard??I don’t think it’s a good app at al to judge that.!I’ve had another insurance company and at least plugging it in to my car actually made me feel like it was worth it because they can actually track everything but an app has a far, distant, feeling that all the they want to do is use your phone to eventually raise your insurance because they track you. I like the company but dislike this practice.

  • False Positives Galore

Have been using the app for a month. Interesting to see hard brakes and accelerations be tagged but the distractions detection needs some work. My phone is set in a cup holder and will often be flagged as a distraction so maybe something is touching the screen but it can’t be unlocked without face id.

Another issue is when both policy holders are in the same car, the passenger will trip the drivers distraction on the passengers phone. The app doesn’t acknowledge two separate phones at once in the same car if both are enrolled into the program. Support has acknowledged this to me.

So don’t bother worrying about distraction streaks until they’re better able to sift out false positives, such as examining if a phone was actually even unlocked or the amount of time the distraction was detected for.

  • Very Disappointing

Incredibly inaccurate, app only recognizes about half of my drives, and the drives it does record usually only records a portion of my drive.

App will periodically record my route on the map as if I’m driving diagonally through a neighborhood, which unless I’m flying a helicopter above the houses is impossible.

App dings me for hard braking when my foot was never on the brake, and dings me for accelerating when I’m moving at a steady consistent speed, I even get dinged for both hard brake and accelerating simultaneously at the same time.

I’m surprised I haven’t been dinged for distracted driving (not that I do), my phone is always on my belt clip when driving and never touched, not even when stopped at intersections, always been my policy, when I’m driving, I’m driving, phones aren’t to be used while in control of a vehicle.

I know the technology exist for this app to be accurate for its intended purposes, but sadly it’s not even close to being moderately accurate to be considered useful.

I’ve saved dozens of screenshots of the many erroneous driving logs.

If I don’t receive the promised maximum discount when it comes time for my renewal, I’ll be seriously considering parting ways with American Family.

    Kindest Regards,

  • Not worth the effort

This app is very flawed. Always on, always monitoring every family member whether driving or not, using battery and cell data is costly and bad enough. But the primary issue i have, it’s flawed logic. I get flagged every single drive for something. Some days I’m flagged aggressive breaking or acceleration, right in the middle of my highway commute, when I didn’t change speed or use brakes. It’s terribly unreliable and aggravating to be flagged when nothing occurred. I don’t trust the algorithm. In comparison Toyota app has none of these issues.

  • Nope, too intrusive

First off, there's way to many fake 5star reviews. Secondly, I never used it, I wouldn't agree to service agreement. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I started reading what I was "agreeing to" a couple years ago, and what they want you to agree to is one of the more sketchy ones I've read.
By clicking "agree" on service agreement, you accept the T&C, but you can't read the full T&C until click agree and enter the app. By clicking agree you give up any rights to dispute any liability the app might have for distracting you, it says you allow them to change the T&C at anytime for any reason without notifying you. Besides me not being keen on another app knowing my location and whereabouts, which this records all of that and other info, If you are involved in vehicle accident in anyway, even if your car wasn't damaged or it was but the accident wasn't your fault, the data from app (which AmFam can't be held liable for it not being accurate) can be turned over to law enforcement or other insurance company to determine who is liable. A few other sketchy things I rarely see in these agreements, not to mention all the reviews about how inaccurate it is, you know this app can cause your premiums to go up too!
