  • Not possible to transfer security settings

When the new app starts, it wants to launch the old app to “transfer security settings.” Then the old app says “our new app is here” and doesn’t allow for any action except for opening the app store. Clearly nobody tested this workflow even once.

Update: They responded to this review with “please call us so we can do it for you.” Meaning do for me what the app was supposed to be doing, but didn’t, because it’s extremely poor quality. They clearly don’t have the faintest idea about app development. When a customer points out a bug, you’re supposed to diagnose and fix it, not manually, over the phone, work around it for each and every customer individually.

  • Need to improve check deposit camera.

New app’s check deposit is so difficult to use. Camera doesn’t take pictures well. Need to try so many times to take perfect pictures. Even pictures were taken, the app doesn’t accept the deposit. The first time this poor camera problem occurred, I called HSBC. The representative said that my signature was not on the line which supposed to be. That was the reason why the app didn’t accept a check. So this time, I tried to sign on the line. But it didn’t work. She also said you can go to ATM to deposit a check. We use cellphone app to deposit because convenient, because we don’t want to go to ATM. I got tired of dealing with it, so I deposited the check to other bank without any problems! Also old app had deposit history, new one doesn’t have it!

  • Bad Experience

I opened the high yield HSBC direct savings account for the 2% APY. First of all their app is very substandard compared to other banking apps. You can't even do ACH transfers in their app. Then as soon as I opened my account I get an email 3 days later the APY is dropping to 1.85%. The nail in the coffin was when they told me I can't add a POD person to my account. This is absolutely unacceptable in 2020. I then called HSBC and asked them to cancel the ACH transfer that I scheduled to fund my account that hadn't gone through yet. They assured me they cancelled it but two days later they completed the ACH transfer anyways. I called them and their call center is definitely not US based and the wait time was long. It took 4 days before they finally reversed the ACH transfer that they told me they had cancelled. And to make matters worse I can't even close my account because they said I'll get a $25 fine if I close it before 6 months... Absolutely unacceptable in the year of 2020. I switched to the Capital One 360 Savings which so far has been good.

  • Always read the fine print on their offers...

I opened a credit account with HSBC a few months ago as I received an offer from them providing 0% APR on balance transfers for the first year. So I applied, got approved and transferred the balance from an old credit card. Besides the fact that they charged me a fee I’m also being charged APR! Two months later I get again a letter from HSBC stating the same offer so then I called to ask why I’m being charged APR and was told that’s because the 0% APR offer is only available if the bank transfer happens within 4 months from opening the account... I do not remember seeing that on the offer letter received also don’t remember seeing anything about a processing fee... so beware of the fine print... can’t wait to pay my balance and cancel this account!

  • Better, but not good

This app is better now than it used to be, since at least I don’t have to enter my date of birth and every time I want to log in, but it’s still not great.

The key component that is missing for me is that while it does show my available balance as well as my ledger balance, it does not show the individual amounts and vendors of the pending transactions. Even Visa gift cards can do this, why not an actual bank app? Even worse, it’s not on the webpage either.

Another related piece of this is that when an in-branch or ATM deposit is made if there is a hold placed on the funds, the release date is not shown on the app (or website) as with other banks. Asking in-branch doesn’t help as the tellers’ response is always “the system decides that.” Systems are programmed by people who set the algorithms. I’m sure this info is buried somewhere in the disclosures but I’ve yet to find it. Having your system to put the date on the customer’s account for deposit would allow for better planning where needed.

  • Apple Watch - balance sneak peak needed

    Hi HSBC,

Can you set up a link to Apple Watch so I can get a balance sneak peak view of my credit card. I had this for credit cards in the UK and it is really handy as you can check on your spending during the month really easily without any log in being required.

Check out Tesco credit card in the UK as a good example. Also Chase bank has nice functionality that shows your spending on the credit card through the month with daily or weekly views.

Can you make some enhancements to the functionality of the HSBC app to keep up?

  • Check Deposit Feature Insufficient for Business Checks

I receive payroll checks monthly and they are standard business size. The app won’t rcognice this size. It either tells me to fill the window, in which case the portions of the check get excluded and it won’t take a picture or if I pull away so the entire check is readable it tells me to fill the window. I’ve never had this problem with any other banking app. One of the key features of mobile banking is to be able to electonically deposit checks - the HSBC app fails miserably at this. IT development team needs to look at any banking app, Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo, even my small independent bank in Virginia gets this right. As I am outside the US frequently this is a highly annoying and inconvenient glitch.
The other functions of the app work well, but the check feature needs immediate fixing.

  • Useless for check deposits

Update: DeVeloper, thank you for your reply. However, your suggestion below was useless. I tried multiple times, installed and RE-installed, cleaned my camera, rotate the camera, etc. it’s YOUR app that needs to be fixed! Like I’ve said, my 2 other mobile bank apps has no problem reading my checks.

The worst app. Same problems as others with regards to check deposit. It’s can’t read the “AUX/Serial or Transcode” even if the picture is clear as a day. Fix the dang problem!

  • Frustrating beyond belief

Oh cool. I need to deposit a check because there’s no branch anywhere for 200 miles? I can use this app to deposit checks? Sweet. Nope. Error message after error message. Call customer service number. These poor people have to deal mad customers. They have suggestions, yeah, “don’t write anything in the memo portion of the check.” Get new check, no memo. Same error. Finally made it to a branch. Teller says, “It might be because the check is grey.” What?! Useless depositing tips. Do this, do that... hold still, black background, plenty of light, press camera button. Never had a problem with the old app with an older phone, older camera. Sad I have to switch banks... this is laughably useless.

  • What a pain.

I budget my real money weekly. I was attracted to this bank because of its superior savings rates (which is the only reason I gave 2 stars). I can’t imagine a bigger pain in the rear to transfer the “left over” money from my weekly budget from my checking account to this savings account. The app doesn’t even acknowledge that I have an external checking account linked, so the Move Money feature only displays my HSBC Savings account. I have to open up my browser, log into the website and even then it’s not as simple as transferring money in the transfer menu. I have to dig through redundant sections to finally get to a drop down menu that displays my linked checking account. What’s the point of the app if I can’t open it up and transfer money from my checking account to this savings account with ease?

Good afternoon! I am so sorry to hear you are not enjoying the app. We currently do not have the feature on the app where you can transfer between external accounts. We are working to bring those kinds of features to the app. We appreciate you reaching out to us and hope we can make your banking experience the best it can be. Please continue to update your app to see new added features. Thanks! AF
