  • Worst public transport app

This app is very unreliable and dysfunctional. It’s bad enough that PTV can’t be bothered to allow iPhone users to utilise Apple Pay so that we are forced to use a piece of plastic (both bad for convenience and the planet). Aside from this third world functionality, the app often refuses to scan my Myki card at all, forcing me to manually enter the number on my plastic card. Every time I search for a route on the trip planning aspect, it also throws an error. I have no idea why PTV can’t offer Apple Pay or contactless payments like London or Sydney. If they insist on a “card” for travel, they could at least digitalise it so that it can be topped up and used in a digital wallet like Apple Pay.

  • Can’t use the app without buying physical card

Unfortunately completely useless to tourists. Had to go into a train station to buy a physical card to use the once to throw away. Save the environment please and allow contactless payments or to use the app to buy a day pass.
  • International Traveler DONT INSTALL

Don’t waste your time if you’re an international traveler and don’t have an Australian number/address because you can’t even sign up. I can’t believe developers haven’t thought about localization. Really disappointing.
  • PTV app

The App needs a serious overhaul. You can only register with an Australia phone number so no visitors or tourists welcome.

The app can not register payments from any cards from NZ so once again the service doesn’t cater for anyone not from here.

Sad thing as it would have been great to have been able to use the service. No top up services available at multiple stores. Only able to top up at train stations and very few tram stations.

  • Unable to create account

I’m visiting from abroad and the app needs a number and an address to register. It would be helpful to have it accept a foreign phone number or have a guest mode so that I can top up and register my card without the need for a local number or address. It would also be good if the app was only needed and I could pay by NFC from my phone much like the express cards that are being used in other countries like Japan, Hong Kong, etc which avoid having to have a physical card.

  • If visiting, don’t bother - tip for developers

To fully use this app you need a physical MyKi card first and then you have to link that to this app. This is not great for people visiting Melbourne. Tip for developers: Why don’t you assign a virtual MyKi number so visitors don’t need a physical card and therefore they can start using the app and pay for transport immediately. This will also help with environmental factors as you aren’t issuing a physical card.

  • Awful

As an international traveler that just rode the Metro all around Sydney, I’m shocked and stunned how far Vic is behind in technology.
To sign up, you need a physical card that cost… Really unbelievable. Just can’t believe how much business they lose over ridiculous enrollment process
  • Favorites stops won’t show scheduled times and can’t see any stops near location

Ever since upgrading my iPhone from iOS 16 to 17, using the app became more of a pain in the *#%<! Before upgrading, the favorite page would should my favorite stop (and it’s headed direction) its scheduled time, which now showing me —:—, forcing me to actually go an extra step and look at the actual train I want to look at time, which renders the favorite page useless at this point.

With the stops near my location or where I am looking at, I would be able to look at the closest stops near me and also go look around to see the other stops or even pinpoint where I want to go to/start the journey, now I can’t see other stops other than my location, and if I want to look at nearby stops, I have to zoom out and press the location button, but it doesn’t always show what I wanted to see, and only show stops in the area my screen is in, for example, I’m at the CBD, then I zoomed to see Coburg, I would see the stops around the edges of the screen of the location I am currently viewing, very annoying.

I tried calling PT on the phone, they told me to go to Southern X Station, then when I did, they said they couldn’t do much and told me to send an email, very frustrating, please fix this as not only me, but many others on iOS 17 most likely experiencing the same issue!

  • Cannot create account without Australian address and phone number

Because apparently nobody has ever visited Melbourne from abroad. Therefore I can’t top up my Myki on the app. Don’t get me started on why you need a special card instead of using contactless. In 2023! You should be ashamed of yourselves. And on the website I apparently need an Australian-issued credit card to top up. What is this absolute nonsense?

Fortunately Citymapper appears to work fine here for route planning.

  • The iOS myki top up system is soooo bad

Let me break down on how tedious it is to top up your myki from an iPhone. First you have to sign up or log in to the app which isn’t too big of a deal. Although I resent the fact that you can’t stay logged in for however long you want as the app will log you out after 30 days. Then you have to take off your phone case if you have one which most people do. Then take out your myki card and payment card from your wallet. And then the most frustrating part. After selecting “top up” the app will ask you to scan your myki but the scanning is soooooo inconsistent and it typically takes 10+ tries to get a “correct” scan. After that you input your card details and then what’s next? Yup even more inconsistent and frustrating failed scans. I don’t even know which card position is optimal for scanning and the fact that you need to take off your case is just extra tedious. At minimum please make it easier to scan our myki’s on ios or remove the scanning process altogether and find a different more reliable method. I don’t know how this much needed and long waited feature even made it pass testing to be honest. Especially considering that most of us use this feature on the tram when we realise our myki is running low. Please fix soon.
