  • Most convenient dictionary I’ve ever used

Title says it all, this app is soooo helpful and such a lifesaver. It really comes in handy in a pinch, like when I went to the doctor while I was in Japan and had to describe my medical condition. Even though I speak Japanese there were a lot Dow rods I didn’t know and this app helped me when I was drawing a blank!
I really love the kanji drawing feature. It’s a hassle to search kanji by radical and the ability to draw it helps you to find the kanji faster.
Also I love the “common word” note. Japanese has a lot of words that are kind of archaic and not really used to it’s good to know when a word is actually used commonly.

Overall this is a great app and a really great tool. Frankly it’s the best Japanese dictionary for IOS!!

  • Amazing. A must have for Japanese language students

So I was looking for a simple Japanese dictionary but everything I tried was terrible and hard to navigate. And I stumbled upon this app and let me tell you, this app not only tells you words, but can also tell you what a certain kanji means. It can also tell you the Japanese counterpart of an English word. It tells you Japanese names and what kanji they consist of. They also have folders for words and kanji that are most commonly used in the Japanese language and explains them in an understandable manner. I can’t express how happy and satisfied I am with this app. 5 stars. 10/10

  • Amazing!

Let me start off my saying I don’t usually write reviews for anything even if I liked it. I’ve bought a lot of things this year and liked most of them but I can only remember reviewing one (or was it two?) of those things and I just did that because it’s Etsy so people work really hard on hand making that stuff. But anyways I’m surprised that not that many people have this app because it’s literally amazing. I was a bit stressed over finding a good Japanese dictionary for my self study and this is literally perfect! You can search up a word in several different ways, and it tells you everything about the word from breaking down the word into its separate kana/kanji to breaking down the kanji into it’s different radicals. I love that it has the ‘common’ marking on words when you search them up as well because it’s really important to know if people actually use this word that you’re looking up, ya know? And it also has a little button for an audio of the pronunciation and while it’s a bit robotic, I was so happy that it had that because it gives me a little bit of insight about the pitch and accent of the word so I can feel more confident about it. I’m just rly surprised that this app doesn’t have 1 million downloads but it’s everyone else who is missing out!

  • Excellent

I've been using this dictionary for two years now and it is absolutely the best!! The synced bookmarks feature is terrific and helps me remember things I've looked up to add to Anki later. Also, using it on an M1 mac is great too!

    Thanks dev!
  • Extremely Useful

To keep it simple, there isn’t another app out there quite like this. Shirabe Jisho has been an integral part of my language-learning journey, and I can see myself using it for years to come. It loads quick, it’s easy on the eyes (in terms of brightness, black background with green text), and you can draw kanji in addition to typing it. I’d list more features, but I’d rather people experience what the app has to offer for themselves.

  • Great dictionary

Really useful in my efforts to learn Japanese. Best feature is the ability to guess correctly which kanji I am attempting to draw. Other dictionaries fail to understand however careful I attempt to draw the unknown kanji.
  • An excellent tool

I am a new but serious learner of Japanese. I already have a number of Japanese dictionaries on my tablet. This one is not just another one. It is definitely the most useful one among them.

My only regret is that I did not come across this app earlier, much much earlier.

Many thanks to the developer. Much appreciated.

  • Invaluable resource

Shirabe Jisho singlehandedly replaced all of my prior electronic Japanese study/reference aids and has been an invaluable resource during my numerous trips to Japan. Being able to quickly and easily look up words in both Japanese and English as well as kanji and romaji is SRT module is so quick and easy. The SRT module is also an invaluable resource for reviewing vocabulary on the plane! Would recommend to anyone and everyone studying Japanese and/or visiting Japan.

  • Easily the most used app on my phone

I’m at about the N3 level in my Japanese studies. The COMMON tag sold me immediately and have been near-exclusively using this app. I still use other Japanese dictionary apps, and although I still (but seldom) come across words that don’t have an entry in this dictionary, I still find it the most useful. Just an example: やめとく doesn’t exactly have an entry, but やめておくdoes. やめとく was, however, used as the only example sentence for やめておく. I’m grateful because that’s how I learned that it’s a contraction, or dialect (I’m still not actually sure). Nevertheless, immensely useful; would give 100 stars if I could.

  • Best dictionary

I can search in English, I can search in romaji, I can search in kana, I can search by radical, heck, I can even search by drawing the character (and it doesn’t fault me for not knowing the stroke order— really a burden off your shoulders when you’re new to Japanese). This really is the best Japanese dictionary app. It tells me everything I need to know about a character from its stroke order to example sentences to frequency statistics. And it’s all free.
