  • LITERALLY A MUST HAVE.

Let me just say, this app did not ask for my review. Hahah. After using it for a few days I have come back to leave a review. Whoever worked on the development of this app worked very hard to make this actually the most useful well thought out dictionary you could possibly have. There has not been a second while using this app that I thought to myself, wow I wish this did _____. It’s so thorough, down to the very detail of every word, walks you through kanji strokes, breaks down word meanings, uses example sentences. If you’re studying words or verbs you want to remember, you can create folders to save your findings. It’s perfect. Literally life changing. Thank you so much for making this app. I consider it to be one of the best in my phone.

  • Incredible App

This app is by far one of the best Japanese learning tools I have ever used. It is extremely accessible and caters to numerous levels of Japanese fluency. It’s built-in space repetition flash cards are extremely helpful. Additionally, all the grammar and Vocab you can think of is involved. It is not only an amazing dictionary but a tool to keep notes and help remember new information, while being accessible offline. This app is a must get for any Japanese learner, be it amateur or veteran!

  • Best Dictionary App; and I’ve tried them all

This really is the best Japanese dictionary, and that’s coming from someone with a degree in Japanese language. You can look up by kanji, katakana, hiragana, English, and even draw the kanji in.

What really takes it to the next level is the fact you can do flash cards- either with your own curated sets (since you can favorite words!) or one of their many sets (such as kanji by frequency, words by frequency, or by JLPT level)!

  • Fantastic, must have!!!

This app is amazing! I love everything about it! It shows stroke order, JLPT level, and other words that use the same Kanji. It even shows the nanori! Honestly, I can’t believe that this app is free… it is so helpful for studying or just as a resource for a quick look-up. It has a number of different kanji lists and vocabulary lists, so it is useful for whatever you’re studying for (JLPT, school, or just for fun.) I would highly recommend this to anyone studying Japanese!!

  • Amazing for learning new kanji

This app really helps me learn and discover new kanji in my Japanese readings / shows / games because it allows me to draw the character, even if it may not be in the right stroke order! Also, the fact that it breaks down all the meanings of verbs and their various conjugations is extremely helpful. I recommend this for literally any beginner/intermediate learners like me: it’s an extremely useful tool I wish I discovered earlier.

  • Best Jisho

No ads, drawing kanji and kana, no locked premium features, example sentences, almost every type of verb and very easy to navigate ui.

Only small little gripes I have is that there are -tai verbs as in たべたい (I couldn’t find them at least) and the example sentences are a little too complex for me. But these are not worth knocking off stars.

If you are an English speaker learning Japanese get this app!!!

  • Very convenient

I've been using this app daily for months and I really like it.
    What I like:
    - Search-as-you-type is very useful and allows the use of wildcards (e.g. suppose you want to look up 下請け but don't know the reading. Maybe you know that 下 can be typed as した, so just type 下?け, et voilà 下請け pops up)
    - Search kanji by subcomponents works well too
    What could be even better:
    - For each kanji, there is a list of similar kanji. While this feature could be extremely useful, I found that that list is very far from exhaustive, and I ended up not relying on that feature at all.
    - I wish there was a 'hybrid' kanji+kana search. Say I'm trying to look up all words starting with 半 that read はんか. It would be convenient to just be able to type 半か and get all such words
    - The History, while useful, gets clustered really fast because words are added to it as-you-type. Maybe add to the history only those words that the user clicked?

    Overall, great app, heartily recommended!

  • Best Japanese-English dictionary on iOS (probably)

I’m no expert but I’ve been using it for 4 years and it’s pretty helpful.
  • Best Japanese Dictionary!

I’ve studied Japanese for 45 years and lived in Japan for 30. As a student I went through 2 copies of Nelson’s dictionary, which was then the gold standard. Then I got a Canon Word Tank, which was the first real usable electronic dictionary in the era before mobile phones. The Word Tank was incredible. Shirabe takes the best of everything in one simple to use app. It’s like Nelson’s and every other Japanese discriminate ever created in one place, easily accessible, and super easy to use. This app is a must have for anybody even slightly serious about Japanese language. To me, this is a miracle app.
