  • UNPROFESSIONAL AT ITS FINEST

My account’s been on hold for weeks, which ran through my membership for the month, I was offered no reason as to why there was a hold, nor was I offered any help to get this matter resolved. I contact customer support and get hit with rudeness from the associates, who want to play ring around the rosey when I ask to speak to a supervisor, then when I finally get a supervisor (my last encounter was with a supervisor named Lewis), he too is rude and unprofessional, ignoring my questions and closing the chat before a resolution is met. So my account is locked, my money is wasted, no one has contacted me, I’m not allowed to contact anyone, where’s the professionalism? Why can’t I even get an answer as to why my account is locked? It makes absolutely no sense… my advice, if you want to stay clear of a headache, DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS APP

  • Not worth the 4 star rating

The Citi bike app should not be worth the 4 star rating as it’s given.
First off all, when I started using this app I didn’t know it charged you for the amount of hours you ride, so when I docked out the bike from Fordham to go and run a few errands, it charged me a total of $76 for 3hours, and another $101 for a ride because I didn’t dock it after riding it, I didn’t know you’d have to dock the bike after riding it. Because I was new to the Citi bike system, it also charged my friend $113 for 5hours of ride, and as of today when I checked my bank account, I saw they deducted a total of $97 dollars for a ride over a week or two ago which is absolutely outrageous

Secondly, the amount it charges for a ride is outrageous and expensive, and I think it also charges you even when you’re not riding it because it’s not docked in.

Citi bike should reduce the amount of riding charges they bill you and also provide more docking stations so it can be easier for the bikes to be docked when done riding, and to also give a heads up to new time users that they charge you for the amount of hours you ride and tell you when you exceed a $10 mark

In my opinion and user experience I think it’s not worth it and there are many other alternatives of transportation apart from this app, overall it should be given a 1star from the other reviews and other people’s experiences so far.

  • Expensive and unreliable

I use this sorry excuse for a service for commuting due to a lack of better options. Even with an annual membership, the additional prices are ridiculously expensive. Not to mention that - as a member -, I had 5 free unlocks for my wife if she occasionally wants to bike with me. It should be 5 per month, not 5 in total. The availability of both the bikes and the docks is terrible - I just missed an appointment as neither of the 2 docks I went to had any bikes DESPITE THE APP SHOWING AVAILABILITY. I was standing right at the dock with the app showing available bikes and there were none - all of them were flashing red.
The quality of the free/blue bikes is just abysmal, unusable. 0.5% inclination? Forget it, you will die trying to cycle up there.

Everything is just falling apart due to negligence and lack of repairs, terrible.

  • Customer Service Issues

Having the Citibikes around is wonderful. I signed up for the membership to avoid a 15min walk from the subway station to my office.

However, I’ve experienced an ongoing problem dating back 6 months: the 3 closest stations to my very low traffic office are periodically always full when I check them multiple times throughout the day; in essence there are maybe 3 spots available at my station before 8:30am, if that.

The easy solution, one would presume, would be to empty HALF of the station’s bikes. I have called in the past to report this, and would show up the following day to find 5 out of 19 empty spots. Great. But after about a week just from one day to the next the station would fill up again for another 2 weeks, perhaps due to Citibike refilling the station.

This is amateurish, and unfortunately the customer service reps, while for the most part fair and well-intentioned, don’t have the capabilities to implement necessary changes.

This is fundamentally either a very poorly thought out strategic business model or a very poor execution of what would otherwise be an adequate business model.

  • Charge money without being upfront

DO NOT USE CITIBIKE! I only used it for its convenience and thinking day pass would save money. They charge more for ebikes since day pass doesn’t cover for ebikes. Classi bike and ebikes look very similar and you can’t distinguish the difference. This is their tactic of charging people more since it’s hard to differentiate the two bikes. They kept explaining that email receipt of day pass includes this explanation of ebikes being extra charge but I did not receive any email. Moreover, several bike stations had issues with docking so I had to look for other stations to dock the bike. One time, the station was broken and it charged $25 even though the bike was properly docked and showed green light. The citibike agent only apologized and nothing was done to resolve these issues.

  • Citi Bike Angel Rewards - Not « Lifetime » at All

I was a devoted citibiker and bike angel until I discovered they do not honor their word. On their website, citibike says you can get a « lifetime » reward of extended time on classic bikes, from 45 to 60 minutes. For me, that’s the difference between my commute to work being within the allowed window or not.

When I got the reward in October 2021 they emailed me I was a « Joy Rider for life » and would have the extended time « for the lifetime of » my « membership. ». A year later, they took the reward away with no explanation and now tell me that it’s actually only a one year reward (their website does not reflect this change).

I paused my membership and plan to cancel it unless Citibike starts standing by what it promises its customers. 1 star

    Developer Response

First of all, thank you for being a Bike Angel. We really appreciate our Bike Angel community. I'm super sorry to hear all this-- it sounds like we made a mistake. Your original interpretation of this reward was correct and we are still honoring this as a lifetime benefit. I'm sorry that you've experienced this and certainly sorry if anybody from our team informed you this reward is no longer applicable. Please reach out to us again so we can set this straight.
  • Beware Broken E-bikes

Honestly this company is a joke. Seems like 70% of the electric bikes I get have an issue with them, often times making them unrideable. I’ve literally almost died multiple times biking into a busy intersection where my full attention is required, only to have the bike seat fall suddenly almost causing a collision with oncoming vehicles. Or how about after a long day of work I walk half a mile to a dock that says it has “5 e-bikes” only to have none of them work, or they are inaccessible due to these new “high volume” stations. Isn’t this company backed by a bank? They can’t pay for good engineers? Will be canceling my subscription at the end of the cycle..

  • Bikes going from bad to worst

Since my m Lyft took over Citibike it had become a subpar service. Bikes are mostly in very bad conditions. Clunky most of the time. Not maintained or fixed properly. The parking situation this summer has been a disaster. On shirt errands trips like grocery shopping I had to go back to the starting point of my trip a few times in order to dock my bike as all available docks were even further than my starting point ! Quite a shame considering that they have been given an exclusivity on this market. This giving no other options to New Yorkers who want or need a shared bike option. Still using it because I do need it despite those terrible conditions.

  • Tired of Citibike failing me

I have been using a Citibike membership as my main mode of transport in New York for over a year. I bike to work and back using the service. It’s been really frustrating - 0 bikes available at the stations near my apartment when I’m rushing to work, the app falsely saying that a bike is available at a station when it’s actually not, stations being shut off so once you lock your bike it doesn’t detect that the bike has been returned, and the charge of your journey continues to increase until you contact customer service, etc. The bikes are very heavy as well, so usually in New York where there are inclines, you need an E bike, and they are not always available, and also dead/not charged once you unlock them. The E bike charge for members is also still very expensive - for a 15 minute journey it’s around $2.50. And of course that cost is even more if you are not a member. Just beyond frustrating. To think they increased the annual member fee, meanwhile the service has not improved.

  • Needs an accessible map

Most of these reviews are about the entire Citibike rental experience— bikes, program, problems, customer service, cost etc. I’ve already made my peace with those issues; I’m just reviewing the app itself.
My only real complaint is that the app no longer has an easily accessible map of the system when you’re not in NYC. I don’t live in the city, but I’m a frequent visitor there and often use the bikes when I do. I like planning in advance where I’m going to pick up and return my bikes, and I can’t do that anymore unless I’m in the city. If I open the app at home it tells me “Citibike is unavailable here”— obviously!
Please return the ability to look at the system map regardless of current location.
